This restaurant tries to bill itself as a pre-theater venue for Veterans Memorial Auditorium. We arrived at 6:15 and immediately put in our order- we ordered only salads and a Mediterranean platter (hummus, pita etc) as we knew it would be tight for our 7:30 show. At 7 we had watched our neighbors get multiple courses and we received nothing. We told our waitress who said that they were backed up and it would be 7 more minutes. Our first salad arrived at 7:13 and the second at 7:15. The third never arrived. We asked to see the manager who showed up at 7:20 and told him we did not want to pay anything. He blamed it on our server but I don't think it was her at all. She was frazzled but checked in with us multiple times saying she was working on it. The manager wanted to comp us drinks. We were drinking water. We had to argue and he finally agreed that we shouldn't have to pay for the few bites of food. The food seemed good actually, but they have no business doing pre-theater. Not at all impressed.
4 people met here for a pre-theater dinner. Made sure the waitress knew we were going to a show in 1.5 hours. Food arrived promptly but my Margherita pizza was black/burned on the bottom. When I pointed it out to her she seemed embarrassed but pointed out there was not enough time to re-order. My husband's pasta was cold and bland and my friend's burger was overdone.
Would not go there again.
Public Kitchen and Bar is a fantastic restaurant. For the past three years, I have come with co-workers for breakfast before an event at the VMA next door. Each year, we truly enjoy our experience. The other evening, my wife, daughter and I frequented the restaurant for dinner before a show at the VMA and we truly enjoyed ourselves. The service was fantastic. Our server, May, was outstanding - very accommodating and informative. The food was great as well. Each of us truly enjoyed everything from the appetizers to the main course. The updated menu offered a great selection. The atmosphere was perfect. We definitely will come back for lunch or dinner. We both highly recommend this restaurant.
My fiancé and I went here for dinner on Saturday night. The restaurant is very nice, with a mixed crowd of hotel guests, people on dates and even a birthday party. We were pleasantly surprised by the portion size and the taste of the food. It was nice having the manager and then the owner circulating through the restaurant checking on guests.
We had breakfast here as we were staying at the Renaissance hotel. They must have had one chef because it took roughly 50 minutes for a small breakfast order to be delivered to our table of 3. When it did arrive the food order was wrong and cold. The waiter was very forgetful and could not be found most of the time. I don't know why they kept seating people without telling them of the long wait for food despite the fact that the restaurant was only half full when we arrived. Our breakfast cost was over $70 for eggs. Don't ever eat here - not worth the wait, the food and especially the price! Very disappointing.
The drinks were very good. We thoroughly enjoyed the cauliflower steak, specialty pizza and lobster roll. The lemon cheesecake for dessert was a nice way to end the evening. The wait staff was very attentive and the manager came by the table as well to check on us as well. They seemed very eager to please and well informed about their menu and options. The location was a short walk to Waterfire and the Providence Place mall.
For a hotel restaurant, we found the meal to be better than average. The menu wasn't very large, but it had some very nice selections. Two of us had excellent dinner salads, and the third person in our party was very happy with her meal. Our waitress was friendly and made us feel welcome. Very few others were in the restaurant, but I suspect that it would be more busy on a weekend evening.
The look on my wife's face when I met back up with her after dropping her off here for Mother's Day brunch said it all. This was not a special dining spot which was confusing as I thought I had read good reviews before booking. To her credit, our server quickly recognized our surprise and slight dismay. She graciously offered us the full menu in spite of the official buffet-only offering that day. We were grateful but didn't want to be a fuss so we tried the buffet. It was certainly passable. Just nothing special at all. We ate quickly and then waited for a bar seat at Salted Slate to closer to our expectations. It may have been our own expectations that undid our experience, but it was a Mother's Day disaster for us.
I ate at public kitchen for a Mother's Day breakfast. It was my first time, but assumed the ambiance and pics online would match the food quality. Boy was I wrong. They did not offer a la cart ordering and said we could only eat from the $20 pp buffet. The food was cold, the toaster wasn't working, I could go on and on. Needless to say, my wife and mother in law and entire party of 6 were not pleased and i left hungry, disappointed and embarrassed. Maybe it is better on a diff day, I'm not sure. But bc of this experience I would not recommend going here.
As always, the restaurant did not disappoint!! Christopher greeted us warmly and made us feel at home. He selected a small table for two and although the restaurant was packed the seats are not on top of each other so you have some privacy for conversation. We ordered four appetizers: the cheeseboard, a pizza, a salad and spicy noodles. The server staggered bringing out the food so we were able to sample everything without being overwhelmed that too much was on the small table. Even though we were stuffed we managed to squeeze in gelato for dessert! The food was all delicious, service was top notch and the atmosphere inviting.....We'll be back and not just when we're seeing a show!
My siblings and I went there to celebrate my birthday. The restaurant is inside the Renaissance hotel there's no parking so we had to valet the car (but we got the ticket stamped so it was free!)The food was AMAZING!! We each had different things so of course we shared! The salmon, lamb burger, buffalo chicken pizza and bolognese were ALL delicious! And our server was funny, genuinely nice, and attentive. We'll definitely go again
we sat for a while before a waitperson approached us and apologized for the wait. He was sincere and accommodating. Later he offered us complimentary desserts for the inconvenience - which we considered appropriate.
Food was plentiful and favorable. Charcuterie and cheese board was generous with nice touches, but the cheeses didn't have much variety. A critique: cocktails were big on ice, small on ingredients, compared with the price.
As always, dinner at the Public Kitchen & Bar prior to a RI Philharmonic concert ... The food is always delicious, and this time even moreso! The chef is always re-creating and creating new menus. The service is always friendly and efficient. May [Mae?] was our server -- caring and friendly. We could also see how attentive she was to an elderly patron nearby. Heart-warming!
As always we found Public Kitchen and Bar to be very good. The menu is eclectic and easy to find things that sound great to try, the food is handled well and the service is very good. The only issue we had this time is that my burger, which I asked for med rare to rare, was way over cooked. I sent it back and they got me a proper burger pretty quickly.
A word of warning- if you valet park on a night when anything is going on downtown, don't expect to get your car back for 1/2hr! This was a terrible way to end an otherwise very pleasant dinner. It's the hotels fault not the restaurant's. They should tell you there could be a long wait. When we complained they pointed to the to notice on the ticket- but by the time your gotten the ticket you've already left your car!!!
When I want Thai and my fiance wants a burger, we compromise and head to Public for the best of both worlds! I LOVE their Spicy Thai Noodles (add tofu) and he loves their grassfed burger. You can taste the quality ingredients in every bite.
