Throughout the space of Public, a modernist sensibility is blended with a classic American, Newport mansion drawing room theme. It's design is inspired by the existing architecture of the Masonic Temple and it's Rhode Island Capital Statehouse neighbor. Public's masculine and warm setting will be a meeting place for hipsters and Senators alike.

Seated in a quiet booth near the back away from the bar and loud party of 8 - thank you to the kind manager who seated us there. Able to concentrate on the menu, enjoy conversation with my husband on our night out and enjoy to the maximum all the delightful fare there is to choose from. Can't go wrong on anything- we had the exquisite clam chowder, scallops, filet mignon and the tagliatelle. Dessert: s'mores -- so fun and inviting to the palate -- and the cocktails were full of zest and offered a balanced experience.

We came in from out of town for a show at the VETS auditorium, it was right next door and we were pleasantly surprised at the great ambiance, as well as great food, drink and service! We would definitely return!

We had reservations for a concert next door and told the waitress about it. She was prompt with service and pleasant. The food is pub-type but good, and prices were reasonable. Glass of wine was very generous.

Food was decent. My adult grilled cheese was very tasty. Boyfriend's lamb melt was only okay. Service could have been much friendlier. I gave the server a heads up when we ordered that we were going to the show next door, and she said snidely, "We're doing the best we can. EVERYONE is going to the show." Just not necessary to make a customer feel bad, even if you're frustrated. So yes, convenient decent place to go before a show at the VETS, but just know that the staff won't be happy about it!

My rule has always been never eat at a restaurant in a mid-priced chain hotel, you’ll always be disappointed. I broke my rule because this place is very close to The VETS theater. My rule stands. I had called to let them know I would be late, when I arrived the GM at the hostess stand gave me grief and questioned me. “You called here”? Finally the waitress who had answered the phone overheard and cleared things up. He was a jerk. The food was mediocre at best. I had the large size Cobb salad for $21 which was laughable, in small size, freshness and how it was plated. Others in my party had stacked burgers which arrived at the table barely warm. A pizza arrived after everyone else was done with their meal because the kitchen ‘made the wrong pizza’. WTF? The waitress was kind, but seemed frazzled. The space is very nice, but doesn’t make up for the bad vibe and weak food.

Bottom line, avoid the grief of a crappy restaurant, walk the extra few blocked and have a decent meal.

Good breakfast menu with lots of choices. Some traditional some not. Easy access because of valet parking at the hotel. Be sure to get your valet ticket validated by the restaurant for free parking.
Good service and attentive staff.

Made a reservation for mother's day and we were the only ones in the restaurant and they were turning away hotel guests which didn't make much sense. Over all the food was good and the waitress was attentive and polite.

We come here after every RI Philharmonic performance because it is so convenient. The food is good but has limited gluten free choices for me. I would love to see the pizzas available with GF crust and some GF pasta dishes.

Was attending a conference and it’s the only restaurant option nearby. Sat at the four tops in the bar area. While busy, service was friendly and fast. Prices were high for what you got ($18 for a plain burger and fries is a bit much) but not unexpected for hotel dining. Burger was well cooked. Coffee was hot and strong. Not much else to add...

The food was awful. Just awful. It’s basically a really terrible version of a hotel restaurant menu.

We were there for a special occasion brunch and it was such a disappointment. It has everything else but good food. Great service. Good atmosphere.

Ok place if you are going to theater next door but otherwise would not recommend. Service extremely slow, my food was cold when it arrived and my friend’s halibut entree was not good. Waiter didn’t notice my friend had barely touched her dish until we were paying the bill.

Would recommend before or after the show at the Vets

On the last night of a business trip, I went here for what I anticipated being a quick dinner. The restaurant was busy thanks to a next door theater show. I ordered one of the most basic things on the menu and ended up waiting 30+ minutes for my sandwich. My waiter was initially inattentive, but once the host noticed my annoyance, became more attentive and apogized for the wait blaming it on the restaurant being busy. I did not feel that I was a priority of my waiter. He was much more interested in waiting on larger tables. Aside fromy unhappiness with the service, the food I did order was excellent.

We were hoping for a better experience. We were sat at a table and then forgotten to be served. The waiter who finally came and the manager were apologetic and polite. The appetizer was delicious but our entries were mediocre at best. We thought the quality and presentation was slightly below average and the cost above average. The facility is cool but we were disappointed in the food.

Girls evening dinner at Public. There was a lively gathering in the bar, which was nice to see. Our server was a sweetheart. But organization in the restaurant overall, seemed somewhat lacking. We ordered Truffle fries as an appetizer. They arrived along with our dinner- so not right. I received the wrong entree entirely. Also, the dinner for 3 people- 3 entrees, 1 appetizer and 2 drinks each was $176. Although our food was good...this just doesn't seem to be the kind of place that warrants that type of a price. I liked my food...liked the server, but didn't leave with an overall great feeling. I would eat here again, but it won't be at the top of my list.

It is very convenient for events at the auditorium next door. Furthermore, the ambiance and service are very pleasant. I have had lovely meals there previously. This time I picked the plowman's meal which a friend of mine had ordered the last time I was there and raved about. But this time the platter came out with 2 tiny pieces of cheese and an equally scarce serving of pate, a bunch of unadorned parsley and some undistinguished grapes and strawberries. Hardly a lovely meal!

We loved everything about it! The food was so good ,The service was great, we had Patrick who was super nice and very efficient. We had tickets-to see a show and he had us fed, he was on top of our drinks Without rushing us but also had us out the door in ample time to see the show! We will definitely be back with large group!

We were in town for a show at the neighboring Vets Performance arts center, the second we walked in the door we were greeted with welcoming smiles. Our server, May was a delight and kept us smiling and laughing. My husband ordered the NY strip steak frites and devoured it. I had the salmon and enjoyed every bite. Would recommend this restaurant to anyone living or visiting Providence.
