Public Fish & Oyster
Food was great as always. For first time in many visits the service was sub-par. Place was busy but we were disappointed.
We first discovered Public in February and loved it. The food was exquisite. The service was perfect. A five star dinner! Last Friday's (10.11.19) experience didn't live up to that first impression. The food was much too salty. Not just one dish - across four entrees and two appetizers. As well, the service fell short, and fell hard. When we visited in February, our wait person took time to fully explain the featured oysters and guide us in our selection. On this visit, however, the server handed us her cheat sheet so we could read for ourselves! Never experienced anything like that before! Was February a fluke or was this recent visit? Am I willing to spend another $300 to find out? Not likely.
Food was outstanding! Chilean Sea Bass, Scallops, Scalloped stuffed Flounder all outstanding! As were the raw oysters! Service was great. It’s expensive but worth every bite. Would highly recommend this restaurant!
It was our last night of vacation and we wanted seafood. We had 4 adults and a baby. The restaurant was spread out with different rooms and outdoor seating. We were seated in the front window and it was quite loud. No biggie for us since we had our baby who was noisy at times anyway. The food was wonderful. Pricey but worth it. Our waitress was great. I’d recommend checking it out!
The hostesses were very friendly and accommodating when we were running a bit late. The server was not very friendly, responsive, or helpful. That said, the food was really good. The restaurant is very loud so don't anticipate a quiet romantic setting.
One of the best restaurants my husband and I have been to in a very long time! The oysters, lobster roll, salads and scallops were so amazing that we ended up going there two nights in a row on our vacation! Chris our waiter was exemplary.
Wow, such great service from John and our talented waiter Sean. The service was flawless and Sean's description of the menu items was perfect. The oysters and mussels were great and fresh. Residing on the east coast, I have to say the best I have had in a while. Nice job gentlemen.
Delicious food! We had a selection of oysters, the scallops and mushroom risotto for entrees, and pumpkin ice cream for dessert. Everything was excellent! Only (minor) complaint was that the service was very fast, we were in an out in just over an hour on Saturday night. However, everything was delicious and a great value!
Always great food and service. Really enjoyed the drinks and appetizers as well.
Patio Dining was the best. Inside was really noisy. Our waiter and the food was excellent. A great evening was had celebrating our wedding anniversary.
This remains my personal favorite restaurant in Charlottesville. I moved here 2 years ago. Daniel runs the best small fine dining spot in the city. The food is always fresh, sustainably sourced and superbly prepared; great service, intimate bistro-style seating inside, patio dining (weather permitting) and seating at the oyster bar. My experience tonight was excellent as usual. I feel at home here. Broiled New England Haddock with grilled zuchini and seasoned tomatoes to perfection. Opened with 1/2 dozen PEI oysters and Hendrix Gin Martini. Napa Valley Chardonnay with dinner and VSOP Cognac afterwards. Highly recommended. Kudos to the entire team!
The food is wonderful and the service was amazing. They have a great list of local ciders, beers, and wine. Highly recommend the desserts.
Fantastic Dinner ! John at the Bar was accommodating - made us feel welcomed from the start! Oysters were amazing, fresh clean and delicious ! Would recommend this restaurant as a Must when you are in the Area. We had a delicious entree ( can’t remember the name ) of seafood , rice in a Lobster based broth - was totally amazing !!!
We will be back our next time we visit Charlottesville.
We wound up taking two family groups there in the same week with great experiences both times. Our wait staff was tops and one waiter even brought my 97 yr old mother a lap robe from somewhere because he noticed she was cold. Several of us thought the haddock was too heavily seasoned and salty for our tastes but everything else was perfect. The pan roast is heavenly and I can’t wait to go back again!
Family get together - service was excellent and food great!
Foodwise it’s a five. The downside is the noise level inside which is near deafening, and I am hard of hearing. Fortunately they could seat us outside which, while not quiet because of its proximity to the street, was acceptable.
Service was efficient if a bit cool. The food was superb. For starters we had fried oysters (delicious) and their famous Belgium truffle fries which are always a treat. For entrees I had scallops which were as good or better than I have ever had, as they were the last time I had them here.
My wife and our guests all had the lemon mushroom risotto which they loved.
So the food is good enough to more than offset the noise. Go and enjoy!
Public Fish and Oyster is the go to restaurant for seafood in Charlottesville. Everything we ordered was fresh and delicious. I highly recommend dining here.
There wasn’t one aspect of this meal that was less than perfect! From the oysters to the mussels to the tuna special - everything just outstanding.
Outstanding period! From the food to the staff not one disappointment. If you don’t go to Public Fish & Oyster you will miss out on one of the best meals and experiences ever! Thank you for a wonderful dining experience while in Charlottesville, VA!
Best seafood in Charlottesville. Great atmosphere, oyster selection, entrees, and service.
Reasonably priced. Prompt, polite, and attentive server person.
Service was great, Food was good but overpriced for what little you get. Not sure we will go back. One and done. (Charlottesville, Va)
I introduced a newcomer to Charlottesville to Public Fish & Oyster and he loved it!
Wonderful! We were there for part of a mini vacation from our home in DC. The service was lovely and friendly and the food was outstanding! One of the owners helped us and she was low key, knowledgeable and highly personable. Very casual atmosphere for with food you’d expect at a much fancier place. Excellent and highly recommended. We got the sous vide beets, a dozen oysters, and their Yucatán mussels (house made sausage for the win).
Wonderful! The selection of raw oysters was amazing and so delicious. We had lobsters rolls (one of each way) and they were packed full of lobster. He Brussels Sprouts are a must have!! Will definitely be back!
Public Fish & Oyster never fails to impress, with the freshness of their seafood and pleasantness of the wait staff. PFO is by no means a place for cheap eats, but the happy hour special ($1.25/apiece for exquisite local VA options) for raw oysters is pretty hard to beat.
Great, intimate spot for a great meal. The wait staff was extremely knowledgeable and helpful with both food and wine selections. The calamari and the scallops, in particular, were phenomenal. I highly recommend it!
We went to PFO for a family birthday celebration. The entire experience was amazing as always. The calamari and Belgium frites wee a huge success with the entire table. Crab cakes, steak and seafood dishes exceeded everyone’s expectations. Service was terrific. Thank you!
What a great restaurant. Our meals were outstanding and the service was even better. PubFish & Oyster is now our number one go to restaurant in Charlottesville!
Lovely and the service was excellent!
We were there to celebrate a belated birthday and an anniversary. The food was excellent! The service was excellent!!
Went here to celebrate our recent marriage and had a fantastic meal. Wine was tasteful and service was great!
Awesome fresh seafood and oysters! Great cocktails. Server was friendly and on point!
My sister and I were visiting Charlottesville and Public Fish and Oyster was recommended to us by the Omni. It was absolutely the best meal we have had in a long time!!! Everything was so tasty and very pleasing to the eye!!our waitress was great also. I highly recommend this restaurant!!
Loved the food.
Every time we come here we are reminded of why we love it! Great ambiance, even greater food - so happy to have a great seafood place in Charlottesville! You MUST try their New England clam chowder - it’s the best I’ve ever had.
Always enjoy Public Fish & Oyster. Great selection of oysters and all the dishes are well prepared. Easily the best seafood in Charlottesville. Lots of care taken to make sure items are fresh. Great service and atmosphere too.
