It really is too bad. They have lovely wine and food but we were so put off by the service we won’t return.
Excellent food, small portions. We would dine here again.
Absolutely delicious food and fantastic wine list. I was nervous when I first walked in because the large space and booths made it look a little too much like a cheaper chain, but as soon as the first appetizer came my worries quickly disappeared. We had been to a Michelin-star restaurant just a couple of weeks ago, but without question both preferred the food and wine we got at Proof. I love the 2oz options for wine so you can taste more without breaking the bank. The duck and lamb were both delicious and perfectly cooked with care. And the cheese plate! Wow was that good. I'd go back just for the cheese and honey.
Great wine selection and amazing food
Service was friendly and efficient. Food was delicious - fresh and beautifully presented.
Atmosphere was very comfortable.
Always look forward to a meal at Proof. And am looking forward to my next visit.
We arrived on a Saturday night at 8:30 to celebrate my wife's birthday, which was noted on the reservation. The woman at the front immediately said that they were sorry but the table wasn't available yet, and suggested that we go sit in the bar area. Fair enough - no offer to take our coats, but OK. The bar was full, so we sat at one of the tables, and sat, and sat. At one point, I tried to get drinks, but one of the people behind the bar snapped "Someone will come over to get your order". Eventually the bartender did come over and took our drink order.
In the meantime, another couple had arrived, and was also seated in the bar area (after the maitre d' had offered to take *their* coats). One of the staff came over to them immediately, they were served their drinks, and after a few minutes they were seated, while we continued to cool our heels. We finished our drinks, and watched as another group of three arrived, had their coats taken (!), and were seated. At one point my wife said to me "That table by the bathroom has been empty this whole time, and if they try and seat us there, I'm leaving". So-o-o, at this point my patience had worn thin, and I went to the front and said to the (?) manager that we'd been waiting for quite a while, and that two sets of folks had been seated in front of us, and asked what exactly was going on? He (rather brusqely) said, "Something's just come up - I can seat you now". No apologies, no question about our drinks - and, if you haven't guessed by now, he tried to seat us at the table by the bathroom. My wife said "That's it - we're out of here". No attempt to dissuade us, just a "whatever" shrug.
We've lived in DC for quite a while, and go out frequently for dinner. This is without a doubt the WORST experience we've had at a restaurant in the DMV area. My wife had initially said she wanted to go to Arroz, which is fabulous, but I dissuaded her, suggesting that we try something new, and sadly she agreed. Alas - my mistake!
Loved this restaurant! The chefs menu was fabulous and the sommelier made it so interesting and fun. In fact, he was the best one we’ve had. Will definitely be back.
Mediocre food - unusually small number of choices
The charcuterie was really tasty, lots of variety to pick from. The bone marrow appetizer was really good. The duck was to be prepared to medium, we asked for medium rare which resulted in a very tender dish. Great service
Fantastic all around! It's pricey, but you get excellent service, drinks and food. Best meal I've had in my many trips to DC over the years.
Very much enjoyed the experience, service, food and wine but next time I will ask for a table further from the bar! The bar patrons generated a lot of noise that cascaded down on the two person table.
Being rushed through dinner is not the mark of a good restaurant. Sitting at the bar later with a glass of wine to overhear the staff gossiping about the terrible management is even worse. Food was great, everything else...meh
Food was good, but the service killed it. I can't imagine how bad it would have been if the place had actually been busy. Hopefully, just one bad apple and not indicative of entire staff.
Still reliable after all these years, though entree of scallops was overcooked. Not enough of an issue to not return. Though cost vs. quality is being strained. Wine list is still solid and there are some rather rare offers if you have the cash to spend.
Thank you for everything. Service, food, and atmosphere were all top notch.
Proof missed the mark for us. While our server was attentive his recommendations were terrible. We asked him to recommend some mild cheeses but two of the three ended up being sharp and pungent. Stay away from the curried cashews - they’re flavorless. I expect curried anything to be exciting to eat but i think they tossed unsalted cashews with curry powder and roasted them. Blah. I had the gnocchi which would’ve been good except it was covered in so much Parmesan that all i could taste was cheese. My husband loved his ribeye - that was cooked to perfection and was the lone bright spot of our meal. We will not be back.
Food was luke warm and not plated well. Actually found a hair in our dessert. Sun setting on this place. Won’t go back.
This was my second dinner visit since PROOF opened. Otherwise I've been there many times for weekday lunch. In the evening the lighting level is too low. After some 10 years in service it's time to ramp up the lighting. It is so dark that it's difficult to actually see people. Also the chairs are showing their age with worn portions on them. The food is very good but it's time to remodel the dining area.
My husband & I have been dining at Proof since 2009–one of our early date spots. We always enjoyed the pre-dinner cocktails at the bar—excellent bar tenders. The food is consistently very good—-we always get the tuna tartare & the cauliflower side dish. Very nice wine list. Service is always pleasant and professional; they clearly do a good job with training the staff.
Good food, great service. Nice and quiet, too, though we dined early so it may have gotten louder as the place filled up. Bottom line - we'll be back.
All the food and wine was excellent. There was a lag before our orders were taken. Group of 5.
Went for brunch. Not in the least like a normal brunch menu. Check menu before booking.
The cheese board and meat board were out of this world and the wine was amazing. Not much else to say, go check it out.
Great ambiance. Interesting food selection. Fantastic wine selection. My only complaint is that the food was a bit on the greasy side -- but tasty nonetheless. Will go back again to try more on the menu.
Went for a pre game dinner for a birthday. Worked perfectly!
Food: Amazing. The gnocchi, pork belly, and pork chop were top notch. We also had the pickle plate, curry cashews, beet salad and cauliflower. The beet salad can’t be “beet”
Service: Our server Jose was very attentive, knowledgeable, and more than happy to accommodate our food peculiarities!
I would highly recommend giving it a chance. I know there is a lot of competition in the area but it’s definitely worth a visit!
Outstanding wine bar with excellent selection of wines by the glass. My husband had the carpaccio and goat cheese flatbread. Both were delicious. My meal would have been 5 star if not for the soup being lukewarm. The gnocchi was out of this world!! Don't pass it up.
Cheeses and wine were great. Entrees were pretty good. Wouldn’t recommend cocktails, but it is a WINE bar. Whole experience started off awkward with the hostess. We thought service was mediocre to say the best but we may have just misread our server who seemed disinterested and maybe a little bummed to have us there. We ended up having a good time despite the rocky start and they made an effort to finish strong.
Celebrating a birthday after Kennedy Center show. Food was spectacular. Service perfect (although a little slow to start because of several tables by our worked to start by our waitress). Good pace. The only not so good is how dark it is. So dark at the tables that they provide little lights to see the menu, but would also be better if more light to be able to see what we were eating. As stated very good but enjoyment would have been better if could see better.
We had brunch at Proof for restaurant week. Food was fine/average. Service was below average and cold. We were charged $6 for a regular coffee (!) and same for OJ, a rip off. Nobody offered to refill our cup btw... On top of it all, nobody even said goodbye to us on the way out. We won’t be back.
We went during Restaurant Week. Menu selections were outstanding and creative. Our server was attentive and thoughtful.
Terrible table next to register despite having a reservation
The service was really fast and very friendly. I would definitely go back again.
No. This place has an identity crisis going on! Speakeasy? That would be a no.
Good food, no. Value, no. High prices, yes. Loud uncontrolled bar, yes. Rude hostess, yes. We were told our reservation through Open table didn't matter ... they don't take reservations for parties less than 10. Maybe they should let Open Table know their policy. (?)
This is another pool hall bar, sports bar, complete with high tops and TV's ( all set to the same channel) It is next door to a cigar bar. Unfortunately, there is the faint smelly stench of cigar permeating into the restaurant.
Don't waste your time or money, unless you are going bar hopping and don't mind paying high prices for mediocre, so-so food expensive food. We left after drinks and apps. It was not comfortable or fun. At those prices, I want to know I had a GREAT time and GREAT food!!
Really nice meal and service
We were last here in August and knew that we wanted to return on this trip to DC. We were not disappointed. We decided to "graze" with a charcuterie board, a couple starters, and finished up with cheese. Our server guided us through a few choices on the food, and Ben worked with us to find a wine that both worked and was at our price point. (Many wines here are well beyond our comfort level, but we did not feel less valued because of that.) We agreed to stretch a little, and were well rewarded with a wonderful Brunello that opened up beautifully upon decanting. The charcuterie was wonderful, with the prosciutto di parma simply heavenly. There was a rather long hiatus between that and the next "course." We did indicate that we were in no hurry, but still it seemed a bit excessive. The cheeses were equally amazing, with one, a semi-soft cow's milk swiss, like nothing we have ever had before. Said hello to the bartender who gave us a good experience last summer, and all-in-all, had a great evening.
Proof has become my favorite place for a business lunch. Food is very good and service is attentive and punctual. Wine selection is excellent if occasion allows.
Return visit after a long time. Still wish the menu would get some additions such as more salads and light food. Long wait time this time, it appeared due to an especially busy crowd on Restaurant Week. Our server was one I've had before and he certainly did his best.
The food and service was very good, but as a non-meat eater, it was limited. We enjoyed our meal .
