Food was luke warm and not plated well. Actually found a hair in our dessert. Sun setting on this place. Won’t go back.

This was my second dinner visit since PROOF opened. Otherwise I've been there many times for weekday lunch. In the evening the lighting level is too low. After some 10 years in service it's time to ramp up the lighting. It is so dark that it's difficult to actually see people. Also the chairs are showing their age with worn portions on them. The food is very good but it's time to remodel the dining area.

My husband & I have been dining at Proof since 2009–one of our early date spots. We always enjoyed the pre-dinner cocktails at the bar—excellent bar tenders. The food is consistently very good—-we always get the tuna tartare & the cauliflower side dish. Very nice wine list. Service is always pleasant and professional; they clearly do a good job with training the staff.

Good food, great service. Nice and quiet, too, though we dined early so it may have gotten louder as the place filled up. Bottom line - we'll be back.

Great ambiance. Interesting food selection. Fantastic wine selection. My only complaint is that the food was a bit on the greasy side -- but tasty nonetheless. Will go back again to try more on the menu.

Food: Amazing. The gnocchi, pork belly, and pork chop were top notch. We also had the pickle plate, curry cashews, beet salad and cauliflower. The beet salad can’t be “beet”

Service: Our server Jose was very attentive, knowledgeable, and more than happy to accommodate our food peculiarities!

I would highly recommend giving it a chance. I know there is a lot of competition in the area but it’s definitely worth a visit!

Outstanding wine bar with excellent selection of wines by the glass. My husband had the carpaccio and goat cheese flatbread. Both were delicious. My meal would have been 5 star if not for the soup being lukewarm. The gnocchi was out of this world!! Don't pass it up.

Cheeses and wine were great. Entrees were pretty good. Wouldn’t recommend cocktails, but it is a WINE bar. Whole experience started off awkward with the hostess. We thought service was mediocre to say the best but we may have just misread our server who seemed disinterested and maybe a little bummed to have us there. We ended up having a good time despite the rocky start and they made an effort to finish strong.

Celebrating a birthday after Kennedy Center show. Food was spectacular. Service perfect (although a little slow to start because of several tables by our worked to start by our waitress). Good pace. The only not so good is how dark it is. So dark at the tables that they provide little lights to see the menu, but would also be better if more light to be able to see what we were eating. As stated very good but enjoyment would have been better if could see better.

We had brunch at Proof for restaurant week. Food was fine/average. Service was below average and cold. We were charged $6 for a regular coffee (!) and same for OJ, a rip off. Nobody offered to refill our cup btw... On top of it all, nobody even said goodbye to us on the way out. We won’t be back.

No. This place has an identity crisis going on! Speakeasy? That would be a no.
Good food, no. Value, no. High prices, yes. Loud uncontrolled bar, yes. Rude hostess, yes. We were told our reservation through Open table didn't matter ... they don't take reservations for parties less than 10. Maybe they should let Open Table know their policy. (?)
This is another pool hall bar, sports bar, complete with high tops and TV's ( all set to the same channel) It is next door to a cigar bar. Unfortunately, there is the faint smelly stench of cigar permeating into the restaurant.
Don't waste your time or money, unless you are going bar hopping and don't mind paying high prices for mediocre, so-so food expensive food. We left after drinks and apps. It was not comfortable or fun. At those prices, I want to know I had a GREAT time and GREAT food!!

We were last here in August and knew that we wanted to return on this trip to DC. We were not disappointed. We decided to "graze" with a charcuterie board, a couple starters, and finished up with cheese. Our server guided us through a few choices on the food, and Ben worked with us to find a wine that both worked and was at our price point. (Many wines here are well beyond our comfort level, but we did not feel less valued because of that.) We agreed to stretch a little, and were well rewarded with a wonderful Brunello that opened up beautifully upon decanting. The charcuterie was wonderful, with the prosciutto di parma simply heavenly. There was a rather long hiatus between that and the next "course." We did indicate that we were in no hurry, but still it seemed a bit excessive. The cheeses were equally amazing, with one, a semi-soft cow's milk swiss, like nothing we have ever had before. Said hello to the bartender who gave us a good experience last summer, and all-in-all, had a great evening.

Return visit after a long time. Still wish the menu would get some additions such as more salads and light food. Long wait time this time, it appeared due to an especially busy crowd on Restaurant Week. Our server was one I've had before and he certainly did his best.

Great food and great service especially the wonderful sommelier who helped us chose a affordable bottle of wine from a very extensive wine list. Our server was a bit OTT, mansplaining the menu instead of allowing us to ask questions and because he provided us with his top three in every category we were a little leery of stepping outside his recommendations! BUT the food - ocotopus, meat balls, cauliflower, gnocchi - was universally great and the little packets of granola as gifts was a lovely touch!

The food was excellent and wine selection tremendous, but the service was really bad. While the waiter was obsequious in his conversation, he was downright hostile to my wife’s gluten allergy. Most upscale restaurants these days are very accommodating, even if they have limited options. This waiter, on the other hand, seemed offended that we were trying to eat out. While he was obsequious, he was very inattentive, and we waited a long time before he finally processed our bill. Unfortunately, while the overall experience MAY have been heavily influenced by our luck of the draw in waiters, it still made for a bad $250 experience for my wife’s birthday.

Loved my meal here. Was dining solo on a Sunday night so ate at the bar. Terrific and knowledgeable service from Raquel. Impressive wine list included including many interesting wines by the glass in different sizes including a two ounce sampling size. Sommelier (didn't catch his name) was knowledgeable and friendly. Would definitely go back.

The ambiance and the service were especially nice. It's great to be able to actually have a conversation without shouting! Food came out a little slow but the chef sent out some mussels in apology and all was good. My only complaint is that it was extremely cold in the restaurant. I know it's only 17 degrees outside but it seemed to be around 60 inside which was not comfortable. I noticed most patrons had to eat with their coats on. I will be leery about returning when he weather is cold. Otherwise, this had become a favorite of ours.

Excellent meal, excellent service. Boar salami and whipped goat cheese appetizers excellent. Rack of lamb cooked perfectly. Arctic Char spicy and delicious. Julia child apple pie a little disappointing. My only complaint was that despite having an open table reservation and arriving a few minutes early and with the restaurant half empty, we were seated next to a bus / waiter station. After 10 minutes with the order screen glaring in our face, we asked to be seated in a nearby table.

Meeting an old friend with much to catch up on our server was terrific about timing when to check on us and creating a sense of "no rush". This was our second time there, food was excellent, recommend the pate plate as a starter - 4 different kinds, all wonderful - we enjoyed the duck and lamb as mains. Wine list is huge (and expensive, though they've got a Sunday night half price deal I understand). The only drawback is the lighting - it is soooooo dark. They give you small magnifier/flashlights to read the menu (and you'll need them) but they aren't helpful when the food actually arrives and you'd like to see what you're eating. It was hard to tell meat from bone when trying to cut and just to appreciate the very good food here. I would think for older patrons this would be a particular obstacle. Everything else about this place we very much enjoy.

The menu was interesting, the food was excellent, the service was quite good, but the restaurant was miserably cold. We asked if they could make the room warmer, and were told they could not. It didn't help that we were seated under a draft and they did not move us, saying we already were at one of the least cold and drafty tables. We've enjoyed eating there in warmer weather, and hope to again, but we will not eat there in future cold weather.
