Proof Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Unfortunately, the terrine/pate selection (the plate with a slice of each) was dry and hard to differentiate one from the other, except for the mousse. The cheese selection held some fine pieces (the gruyere and the California soft cheese -- all extremely small at over $4.00 apiece -- but most of them were far too dry and without distinctive taste. Perhaps I just hit a bad night, as others rave about Proof, so I will give it another try.
Excellent food and great, diverse selection of food and drink. The best we have tried in Penn Quarter. Have tried most in the area since our group of 4-6 goes out after attending the Shakespeare Theatre 4-5 times a year. Some drink selections can be very pricy, but a great place for a special outing.
Thought my appetizer--a collection of pates and terrines--was superb and had huge portion sizes. Maybe the best pate/terrine plate I've ordered anywhere. Server told me this was the best selection on the cold appetizer page and I'd agree.
Adequate hanger steak--small portion size, interesting presentation. Was OK.
Wines were hit and miss. I appreciated the fact the server recommended wines that were on the lower end of the price range and grapes with which I was unfamiliar. Having said that, I discovered no hidden treasures, just a lot of underpriced wines I didn't particularly like.
Server was terrific, knowlegable, and very flexible. An enjoyable evening. I'd go back.
The charcuterie plate was the best we've had in DC - tremendous variety and excellent quality. That and three small dishes was plenty for four people. The prawns were wonderful. The gnocchi was very light and delicious with no heavy sauce, just some grilled cherry tomatoes. The lamb meatballs were in a very good sauce. You could have a very reasonable dinner here if you are careful about what you drink. With 4 glasses of wine , 2 beers and a scotch it more than doubled the food bill.
3 of us went for lunch. I had called before to ask if the lunch special was still in effect - the answer was yes. Suggest, though, that restaurant employees should be sure to note that special applies only if you sit at the bar (but why really must that be the case anyway?). Had thought we'd take advantage of special till we realized it applied to bar only - and we didn't want to sit at the bar. Well,ok, nevermind. But we were all underwhelmed by our entrees (bad choices?). Shrimp salad was 4 pieces of plain romaine one on top of other, 1/2 dozen steamed shrimp, a few sliced olives, croutons, and a parmesan crisp. Boring and just odd. Service was so so, kinda slow. We won't go back.
Our server was charged with the entire outside area by herself, so may have been a little overwhelmed. It took her more than 15 minutes to come back with our drink orders. She forgot our dessert orders and never came back, so after 30 minutes, we gave up and asked for the check instead. However, the food was excellent.
we sat outside during lunch and service was pretty poor! (except for another server who took pity on us b/c our server was 'checked out'). otherwise - creative lunch menu and extremely tasty sandwiches and salad. superb wines-by-the-glass list, perfect for lunch.
This was a first time at Proof. Met an old friend for lunch and we both zeroed in on the lamb burgers. Unfortunately, they were out. She opted for the beef salad and I went with the duck confit salad. Her salad was huge and very fresh looking. Mine was disapointing (especially since I now had a juicy lamb burger on the brain). My salad was a small and somewhat dry duck leg set upon a small pile of slaw. It was OK. But, we did see a gorgeous charcuterie board placed at the table next to us. That is what I would come back to try!
We started with the full charcuterie board which 4 of us shared. The variety was great, all artisan made, and more than enough for more than just a taste for each of us. Next we split two starters, the flatbread and red beets, a nice interlude of non-meat after the charcuterie. For entrees we had branzino, sablefish, and the stuffed chicken (2). All were excellently cooked, the chicken melt-in your mouth tender with a wonderful mushroom stuffing. Both fish dishes likewise excellent. Sablefish with a lovely pepper sauce. For dessert we shared a selection of 4 cheeses (the waiter added one more for a couple bucks additional) and a cookie plate - a nice combination to finish off an excellent meal. Best meal we've had in DC.
Superb food and an incredible wine list for both ends of the economic scale. Well worth asking the sommelier to pick something out. Attentive service - our waiter was genuinely enthusiastic about the food. If you get the cheese plate might be worth asking for the bread without nuts and fruit which was not always complimentary to the cheeses. Overall a great place on all fronts.
We started with charcuterie and cheese for the table as we caught up with our friends. Service was attentive but did not rush us as we made our way through several courses and bottles. Our server was very knowledgeable regarding the wines and menu items. It's expensive, but worth it!
This was my second visit to Proof. We will go again. Things did not jump off the menu at me--there was nothing that I was dying to have. I settled on the pork chop, something that I never order, because the waitress said she loved it. I found it tough, maybe pork chops are tough? Despite that, we had a wonderful time. We were seated in the back and had no awareness of anyone else in the restaurant, a real plus. So many places are too loud, this was just right.
The rabbit course was delicious! I liked the squash blossom preparation on the side too. The red wine the waiter suggested went well it. The hangar steak was prepared perfectly, however the greens on the side were a little bland for me. The service was fantastic. Thank you to Proof for a good celebration!
Food was awesome...was with a party of 4. everyone ordered a variety of dishes...everyone was spectacular.
Drinks on the other hand were just OK and very over priced.....$162 bar tab of a $367 total bill....all waiter recommendations were very pricey and not particularly memorable.
I would go back in a heartbeat, but bring my own wine and pay the corkage fee....not to sva emoney, but to ensure quality.
this was our first lunch at proof. my wife and I usually do dinner there and we are very picky. that being said our high expectations were met once again..the food was excellent we had the lamb burger, shrimp burder and a hummus flatbread salad. the vietnamese inspired banh mi like shrimp sandwich was phenomenal...service was attentive, professional as always which was particual great since lunch was an escape after a bad monday at the office.
We loved it. It lived up to and exceeded our expectations. We all loved our entrees, tasted each others, and were debating which was the best. We even got into a discussion with the table seated next to our about what to order, and as we were leaving, they were making a case for what they had ordered being equally as good. Service was great, our waitress knew a lot about the wines and helped us match our choices with the food. We started with a cheese plate for a change which was delicious and fun. All over, a great dining experience, would go back tomorrow! P.S. We all had fish, wonderfully prepared, and my wife had a tofu tower, which surprisingly was very tasty.
