Proof Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
The restaurant was hard to find--the outside sign was not lit, and I had to circle around 2x until I called them for guidance. There was a 4-top next to us and they were loud, but we didn't complain - we just had to speak louder. The appetizers came quickly but the entrees took quite some time, and we had to call the waiter to ask. I also ordered the guanciale to start with, but it didn't come with the other apps--the waiter forgot. The food was good. It will be a while before I go back there.
We have been to Proof several times before over the years, and it has continued to maintain high standards for food, wine and service. We've never been disappointed. The ambiance is casual, and the high-backed booths are cozy for a group. The abundance of charcuterie, cheeses, pates and small plates could comprise a meal on their own. The pastas and main courses are seasonal and in varied styles, with some perennial favorites that have been on the menu for years (like the Berkshire pork chop) and other rotating items. The wine list is extensive and provides a nice range from each region and grape/style. Our waiter, Will, was perfectly charming, not hovering and not rushing us out.
Food was wonderful. We were treated as rude as I've ever been treated in a restaurant by the sommelier/manager. I felt like I made a mistake telling the hostess where we were walking from that was causing us to arrive a few minutes past our reservation time. The combination of poor service by our waiter and being treated rudely by the sommelier/manager made what should have been a great meal only mediocre at best and cause a negative overall experience. I'll never return and advise the same to any interested parties.
We were late for our reservation due to DC traffic. Front of house staff were very accommodating and helpful. 30 min late and going to theater but meal was paced so beautifully that we did not feel rushed or stressed. Delicious food. Beautiful restaurant. Great location for both Shakespeare theaters. Worth going back and back and back.
This was the second occasion I had the pleasure of dining at Proof. It has been a few years since my last trip. I was very pleased it was just as good as the first. I am a little apprehensive visiting restaurants that have been around for a while because there is a tendency of small declines in quality or service. That is certainly not the case at Proof. Our server Katie was pleasant, informative and fun. She brought out Chef Austin to our table and he was a pleasure as well. His influence within the restaurant is very evident and his passion shows through. Thanks again for an enjoyable evening.
I had not visited proof since the end of the last hockey season and chose to revisit after the iffseason ended.
It was TERRIFIC.
Wonderfully inventive cocktail list, one if the most comprehensive wine offerings in DC and interesting, delicious and fairly priced food.
I can't wait to return.
The current management team honors the founders standards of hospitality.
Proof is like the familiarity and comfort of an old friend, but surprises you with an evolved view on life, or in this case, food. Service is never a question here. I like to say it is New York quality service (as an ex NY foodie, this is high praise for me). They even had a glass of bubbly for us to help my wife and I kick off our anniversary celebration. But the food. We went with the tasting menu, and each course was on point, with the star of the show being the pork belly. The textures and melding of flavors was amazing, and the perfectly cooked pork came shining through. With solid wine pairings and an easy flow to the night, we left happy and still very much in love. With Proof.
A bit of a mixed review. The food was great and the server was friendly and well-meaning, so that's a positive thing. However we sat down and 15 minutes went by before I had to tell the hostess that we hadn't seen a server. Hostess apologized, server arrived and apologized, comped our cocktails which was appreciated. We ordered appetizers, ate those, and ordered food and briefly thereafter, wine to go with the food (which had not arrived yet). Then the food arrived but not the wine. So we sat, then we started eating, and 2/4 of us were done with our food and the other 2/4 close to done (eating s...l...o...w...l...y) before the wine actually made it out to the table, which was sort of silly. For what it's worth, the restaurant wasn't particularly busy, either. So my advice would be to try to coordinate a bit better, make sure things are there when they should be, timed properly with other things.
It was nearly empty when we arrived at 1130. There were no specials, no outdoor dining, and no coffee offered for 24 minutes after group sat. Tried to make it up with extra donuts at end of meal. Generally an odd, uninspired meal. Cinnamon buns okay-same glaze as pancakes. Far from special.
