Gastro Pub

We're still at Baum Blvd. We still have great food, stellar service, and a bar you can cozy up to. So why the name change?
With Proof, we want to show you what's in our hearts, on our minds, and most importantly, filling our plates. Chef Mark Samson wants to show you his heritage through crave able dishes with a hint of Southern twang. Bartenders Jon and Dawn want to present an innovative cocktail list, trend-forward beer selection, and a wine program to make Toast proud. And our dynamic front-of-house staff want to transform your old date night standby into your new go-to spot.

This is a fun place with an interesting and reasonably priced wine list. Thursday nights are burger nights. For only $12 you get a delicious burger, a domestic beer and a shot of burbon. What a deal. There are of course add ons and options. I had the "Cornbread Crusted Buttermilk Pie" and it was amazingly delicious. Highly recommended!

We just took a group of 8 to Toast! and had excellent time. Since we were a large group, we were able to sit in a more private room upstairs, which was really nice. Our server was amazing - very knowledgeable about the menu & very friendly. Every thing that we ordered was delicious - especially the cornbread, fried chicken, and shrimp & grits. Yum!!!

This was once Toast which was wonderful. Proof never happened and now it's Chaz and Odette which gets as many 5 stars as 1 stars so who knows. When I booked this reservation and ate there it was Toast and it was divine. Not sure why they went under, but the first time I will mourn the loss of a restaurant. The only exception would be the Elbow Room in Shadyside... but they came back home :)

Everybody enjoyed their entrees. Mine the mushroom was great!! Though there was a forgotten salad at our table and to fet somebodies attention was difficult.

Our experience overall was really good. The ambience, service, and food were really good. Having said that there were some downfalls. The meals were disproportionate. The Nashville Fried chicken was excellent but there was enough to feed a small third world country, while the Hanger Steak left my husband hungry and he ate again when we got home. The upside is that they source locally and make items like their sausage in house. They have a very limited bar, featuring about 20 selections of wine, which is very over priced. The bottle we bought was $36, the least expensive on the menu. We found that same wine as a special order online at $7.50 a bottle when you buy a case. Overall, really good food, nice intimate place and our server was great. On the downside, parking is very limited on Baum, but free after 6, menu is over priced - well prepared but disproportionate, and bar is limited. I was disappointed they had no artisan Bloody Mary's.

This is a cozy little place with a freindly staff and great specials. My wife and I have been heer twice now and it has not disappointed. Thursday Beer, Bourbon, and Burger night is unbeleivable. Great burger and a great price, make sure you get reservations because it will fill up fast. We want again on a Friday so that we could try other selections, I had the Nashville fried chicken and my wife had the shrimp and grits. They both were exceleent choices. The chicken came with 3 big pieces of chicken with just a toach of heat and it was complimented nicely with the sweetnes of the molasis and the greens. The mac and cheese was great also. The chicken was cooked perfectly and the protion was big enough that I had to get 1 piece of chicken to go. My wife loved the shrimp and grits. I cannot give you too much of a review as I only was able to steal a taste of the grits. We cannot wait to go back on a Wednesday for 1/2 price bottle of wine. Only downside was that there is limited parking.

The waiter was the very worst my husband and I had ever encountered and we eat out at Pittsburghs finer restaurants, Eleven, Casbah etc., We asked what vegetables were offered that evening and he suggested we read the menu. Reservation for 12 at 6:00 pm. Waiter never took our order till 6:35 and food did not come till 7:15. We had company come in from out of town and this dinner was most embarassing. We had 2 empty bottles of wine and 7 empty wine glasses on the table for over half an hour befor the waiter ever came around. By that time we just wanted out!

We went for New Year's Eve. Did the che'f selection with the wine pairings. Had to send two out of four courses back. The lamb was overcooked and extrememly fatty. However, the skate was cooked perfectly and tasted delicious. Wonderful to see that on a menu as it's hard to find, for some reason. The lemon cannoli missed the mark, however. Service was good and the bar area very cozy.

Drafty restaurant with poor service, just average food but highly priced wines in an old building that could have been decorated by Morticia Adams. Be careful if you dine on the second floor, the steep and narrow stairs could be lethal for patrons with cardiac disease or after imbibing too much wine!

I took my husband here for a surprise birthday dinner. We heard that the food was great but we were very disappointed. Our Shrimp bisque was cold and tasted very fishy. We could not eat and sent it back. The same fishy taste was in the shrimp and grits. Three of us got the shrimp and grits and we all felt the same about it. The flat bread we had as an appetizer was good, but we will not be coming back to Toast. Not impressed one bit.

We liked the concept and the menu, but execution not so much. The cooked dished did not seem fresh. The mussels were salty, and the chicken dry and bland, as was the grilled bread. We wondered if the ingredients were old or partially pre-cooked. The vegetable dishes (salad and sides) were much tastier. Food should have been fresh since we were there early on a Sat. evening. Service was okay. Too bad, we were looking for a new fun place.

The food was fine, nothing exceptional. However, it was accompanied by service with an unpleasant attitude. For a place that calls itself a wine bar, we thought the selection was quite limited, with maybe 7 choices for white wine, most of which tended toward sweet. The server responded rudely when I commented on this, but then upon returning to take our order, encouraged me to taste two different selections. It was still uncomfortable. We have too many other options in the East End (with refined service and excellent food and wine) to return to Toast.

We had a nice experience at Toast. Due to evening plans we were the first diners of the evening and found the music a bit loud for an empty restaurant, making it more difficult to chat. The wine list was notable as expected and not as expensive as I anticipated. The food was likewise strong, particularly for the price. I did find the roasted vegetables accompanying our salmon were cooked with more oil than I would have anticipated for roasting. The service was overall ok - the waitress had some memory issues with the menu and once she had 3 tables we found her much less attentive. Overall an excellent value for the price, but not impeccable.

I took my girlfriend here hoping for a special date night. We knew there was something up with the restaurant when we walked in and were the only people there on a Saturday evening. The wine list was not extensive at all and the sangria that I ordered was completely tasteless. We got baked Brie as an appetizer and it came with one slice of bread that was burnt. We didn't even bother to order an entree and asked for our check and left.

Good overall experience. We both had the pork porterhouse, which came with lovely habenero grits and a wonderful apple jus. Perfect for fall. Cocktails were good too! We sat upstairs and would have preferred downstairs. Not enough people upstairs [on a Friday], and we couldnt help but hear the conversation at the table next to ours. Mediocre but friendly service [e.g. took too long to get our drinks to go with dishes so we were drinkless for a bit]. Still, overall recommended. I find that Toast is a good value for the food compared to other restaurants of its quality.

I used to go to this restaurant regularly. Toast formerly was a gem, but the menu now is not particularly interesting. The dishes we had (roasted chicken, and the fettuccini with crab, shrimp and sausage) were ok, but nothing to recommend. The bar is still very good, but with so many excellent restaurants in the area, I'll skip Toast.

This was my first time at the restaurant. I went with a friend and we had the same food--onion bisque and the hanger steak plate. Both were very good with a nice presentation. I also had a tasty chardonnay. We parked on street since there is no lot. We parked over a block away but had no problems. Service was good once we had a regular server. We encountered three different people taking orders.

We had a variety of food 2 small plates, a flat bread and an entrée. The baked brie was delicious. We had the risotto entrée. ..it was creamy with a touch of fresh with peaches and arugula. I hope I can make it again soon.

A former "Pittsbugher" was back in town visiting and wanted to try one of our new favorite places. So we took him to Toast and had an enjoyable evening.

We had a Groupon, food was unique and delicious, we sat upstairs, service could have been a little quicker, but we realized there was only one server in charge of the upstairs, aside from that the server was really knowledgable and friendly, once the area cleared out a little she was able to chat with us, we will definitely return, the beef brisket flat bread was amazing, the mystery wine special at the bar was fun

We had a wonderful time at Toast, as the food, wine and environment is quite lovely. For our first visit to the restaurant we used a Groupon to see if we would like it. Unfortunately, we were not made clear that if we ordered anything on the Thursday night tasting menu that it invalidated our Groupon for the entire check. The manager promised to honor our Groupon at another date (since it expired that night), but it would have been nice to understand this issue prior to ordering. We very much appreciate this gesture; the misunderstanding simply made for an uncomfortable billing process.

I've been to Toast! several times in the past for special events, and these were always great. When I came in with my Groupon, though, the food was really just okay. For $19/plate, I really expected more from the roasted chicken. The sweet potato falafel was next to impossible to eat (pick up with hands? Use fork and knife on cracker-thin, crispy flatbread?), heavy-handed, and merely adequate. I didn't have any wine this time, but I do admit that my experience would have been enhanced if I'd had a glass. The cornbread was very corny and not at all interesting--it was the sort of thing that anyone with an oven could whip up. Service was extremely good despite the food. An adequate time was had by all.

Food was an eclectic mix of items; we liked everything we tried. The summer garden salad, Pablano stuffed peppers and flatbread were all outstanding. I would probably try a different small plate - the brie was okay, nothing special. The hostesses were friendly and inviting, the wait staff was attentive.

The service and ambiance were very good. My husband (who is a vegetarian) had a pizza and thought it was delicious. As a vegan, there was literally not even one entree for me. I ended up getting the falafal without the yogurt. It was extremely dry. I know this is because I didn't have the yogurt, but something should have supplemented the dish. I understand this is not a restaurant that caters to vegans, but they could have at least one entree or be more accommodating, like most other restaurants are. I would come back if they improved the menu for vegans.

My husband and I often select Toast! as a casual place for a nice glass of wine and meal. We like that it is unpretentious but the food is good and the wine list is interesting.

I think our server had a number of tables, yet we never felt neglected or hovered upon. Wine selection great, and 1/2 price bottle night a great draw!
