Daniel-Etienne Defaix 'Côte de Lechet' Chablis Premier Cru | France 2005$166.00
Producer: Daniel-Etienne Defaix. Region: Chablis, Burgundy. Varietal(s): Chardonnay. Defaix's "Côte de Lechet" is a master class in mineral precision. This remarkably steep site (a 45% gradient) with very poor soil produces a wine that Danny describes as embodying "the real, true mineral expression of Chablis," and even the generosity of the 2005 vintage cannot dull the blade of this limestone scythe. Freshly blasted chalk dominates the nose, with notes of candied lemon, acacia honey, and fresh herbs lurking underneath; still, this is a wine of minerality first and foremost. The palate is strikingly broad, but with a strictness and linearity that carries the intense limestone of the nose all the way through the lengthy finish like an ice luge. This is a wine of immense tension and mouth-watering salinity that comes across as youthful, but offers a great deal of secondary pleasure at the moment as well. The family owns a 3.5-hectare parcel of 45-year-old vines in this distinctive cru, most of which are planted within a parcel known as the "Clos des Moines

Riesling
Forge Cellars 'Classique' Riesling | United States 2018$48.00
Producer: Forge Cellars. Region: Seneca Lakes AVA (Finger Lakes), NY. Varietal(s): Riesling. This "bone dry" riesling actually has a little residual sugar, but a powerful quenching acidity balances it perfectly. "Combining aromas of mineral and fruit: mango, jasmine, flint, it delivers a balanced texture, straightforward while being both long and soft." This riesling shows licorice, apricot, chamomile, jasmine notes with the slightest hint of sugar to balance the bracing acidity. This is a DRY wine, and may not appeal to American fans. Each vintage of this riesling shows a suprising amount of difference, year to year, due to the vineyard composition and harvest times

The Österreichische Traditionsweingüter is an Austrian classification system, similar to French crus. 1er ÖTW is the equivalent of a Premier Cru, and a mark of utmost quality. Each vintage brings a different character, although all are delicious. The 2017 is more delicate and floral, with brioche and candied blossom notes. The 2018 is juicier, zestier and bright, with a strong acacia blossom note
Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Auslese | Germany 2007
Producer: Dönnhoff. Region: Nahe. Varietal(s): Riesling. For over 100 years, the Hermannshöhle has been revered as the Nahe's top-ranked site and the benchmark by which all other vineyards in the region are judged. It takes its name from a small mine, or "Höhle", in the middle of the hillside. "Hermann" is derived from Hermes, the Roman god of messengers and travelers, and the name likely hints at an ancient place of worship once located here. This site faces due south and lies 130 –175 m above sea level. Its soils are primarily blackish gray slate mixed with extrusive igneous rock, porphyry and limestone. For generations, this marvelous site has shaped our expectations for what fine wines from the Nahe can achieve

Bond 'Vecina' United States 2013, 2014, 2015$750.00
Producer: Bond Wine. Region: Oakville, Napa, CA. Varietal(s): Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2013 is the boldest of the three vintages, with ripping tannins pulling through an intensely delicious fruit core. 2015 is next, with just a little lighter character, but more dark aromatics like coffee and tobacco. The 'least big' of these huge wines is the 2014, from a late harvest that shows just a hint of breezy salinity and expressive roundness

Harlan Estate | United States 2013, 2015$1,500.00
Producer: Harlan Estate. Region: Napa Valley, CA. Varietal(s): Cabernet Sauvignon. Harlan Estate vintages are each a jewel, as the "first growth" of Napa Valley, however the 2013 is truly legendary. Chewy fruits, long tannins and tightly coiled graphite minerality go on and on. The 2015 is a racier model, with Mediterranean herbs and baking spices layered on top of plump fruit. Both are as close to perfect as grapes can get

Masseto | Italy 2015$980.00

The aromas are profound here with a deep and vast character of black olives, cedar, chocolate and berries, as well as vanilla essence and light coffee. Flamboyant. Full-bodied, this powerful young Masseto is chewy, muscular and rich. Dusty tannins, yet wonderfully polished. A wine for the cellar. Try in 2022. This red leads off with exquisite notes of vanilla and toast, framing black cherry, blackberry, cedar and iron flavors. Ripe and powerful, yet polished and silky, with dense tannins well-integrated into the structure. The fruit returns in the end, along with a licorice note. A superb young version, showing fine potential
Nebbiolo
E. Pira e Figli Chiara Boschis 'Via Nuova' Barolo | Italy 2013$260.00
Producer: E. Pira e Figli. Region: Barolo, Piedmont. Varietal(s): Nebbiolo. Prior to 2009, Via Nuova was the colloquial name of a vineyard in behind Chiara's cantina in Barolo. With the arrival of the MGA, which codified the names of Barolo's crus into law, the vineyard became known as Terlo. At this time, Chiara decided to stop producing her Barolo Via Nuova as a single vineyard expression, and instead make it a classic Barolo blend from all of her plots: Terlo and Liste in Barolo; Gabutti and Baudana in Serralunga; and Ravera and Mosconi in Monforte. The total extension of vineyards is 2.5 hectares at an average of 340 meters over the three communes. Approximately 600 cases are produced each year
E. Pira e Figli Chiara Boschis 'Mosconi' Barolo | Italy 2013$300.00
Producer: E. Pira e Figli. Region: Barolo, Piedmont. Varietal(s): Nebbiolo. A close friend of Chiara had been working in the Mosconi cru for some years: the late Domenico Clerico sourced his Percristina Barolo from this Monforte vineyard; so when she heard of an old vines parcel becoming available there, she leapt at the chance. It was her first foray outside of the town of Barolo, and it immediately provided a point of contrast to her Cannubi—deep, dark colors, rich structure, and power all emanate from her Barolo Mosconi—which helps to shine a light on the elegance and perfume of her Cannubi. From 3 hectares at 400 meters above sea level, annual average production is about 800 cases
E. Pira e Figli Chiara Boschis 'Cannubi' Barolo | Italy 2012$315.00
Producer: E. Pira e Figli. Region: Barolo, Piedmont. Varietal(s): Nebbiolo. Chiara has just 0.7 hectares in the heart of Cannubi-Cannubi at an average of 300 meters above sea level. Her vineyards were replanted in 1982 with clones of Michet, Lampe and Rose Nebbiolo. To call Cannubi the most historical cru of Barolo is not to exaggerate: the oldest bottle of Barolo in existence says simply "1752 Cannubi"—it has long been considered the region's Grand Cru, and is by far Chiara's most recognized wine. 300 cases produced annually on average

Domaine du Gour de Chaulé Gigondas | France 2015
Producer: Domaine du Gour de Chaulé. Region: Gigondas, Rhône. Varietal(s): Grenache (standard). Perfectly-sized bottle for solo travelers or those unwilling to commit to a full bottle. There are several important vineyard sites that form the base of the Gigondas that comes to the USA, including Gour de Chaulé, Les Blaches, and Les Bousquets. The average age of the Grenache vines planted within these plots is 55 years (as of 2011). Production levels generally average 30 to 32 hectoliters per hectare. The grapes are harvested manually and are never destemmed. There is a three week cuvaison. A small amount of press juice is added back to the cuvee. Malolactic fermentation takes place in cuve and, after the malolactic fermentation is complete, the wine is racked into large oak "foudres" where it stays for approximately 18 months. The wine is racked no more than three times before it is bottled – unfined and unfiltered – 30 to 36 months after harvest. New oak is not used at this domaine. The resulting wine is sturdy, braced with sweet, dusty tannins, and is intensely aromatic with notes of crushed white pepper, oriental spices and game

Chateau Musar Rouge 1998$165.00
Producer: Chateau Musar. Region: Bekaa Valley, Lebanon. Varietal(s): Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan (Carignano), Cinsault (Cinsaut). The cooler 1998 has an elegant Cinsault dominance; the colour is lighter and more delicately perfumed than a typical vintage. Despite this initial impression, the wine is deceptively powerful with a vibrant acidity and fresh, soft red fruit flavours and a very long, spicy finish. The ideal partner to mushroom and game dishes. The winter preceding the 1998 harvest was a normal Lebanese winter – a mixture of cold, rainy and snowy weather with several weeks of sunshine. This was followed by a cold, wet spring which lasted until June. Summer followed its normal pattern, although from June until October there was no rain at all. The harvest started on the 9th September with mixed maturity levels: some grapes were already quite mature, whilst we delayed harvesting others for up to two more weeks. There was no obvious reason for this diversity, but this is "les caprices de la nature". The crop was good in terms of both quality and quantity – the grapes were healthy and very good to eat. Fermentation progressed smoothly, although slightly quicker than usual, maceration was up to four weeks. The wines were racked into French Nevers oak casks in August 1999 and aged for twelve months, then blended in September 2000 and bottled in August 2001
Chateau Musar Rouge 2011$168.00
Producer: Chateau Musar. Region: Bekaa Valley, Lebanon. Varietal(s): Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan (Carignano), Cinsault (Cinsaut). Dark blood red colour with a rich, fragrant fruit nose; mulberries, black cherries, plums with a hint of mocha. The palate is full, intense and concentrated, characterised by black forest-fruits with elegant spice. The tannins are soft and juicy and a long finish. The harvest of 2011 posed one of the most challenging experiences in winemaking at Chateau Musar over the last 20 years, as it was one of the most untypical years in Lebanese history. The year began with a cold January but with insufficient rain. February proved similar with March being sunnier, but April and May produced the really big surprise with a level of rainfall to match January, February and March combined! The main result of the rain was very late maturation, with flowering occurring 25 days later than usual and this delay continued over the maturation period and up to the harvesting day. Our first Carignan was harvested on the 22nd September and then on the 23rd it rained for three days, with the Carignan and the Cinsault not yet harvested. The Carignan resisted the rain but the Cinsault was more affected. The harvest was finally completed on the 13th October, which with the exception of our 1983 vintage, was the latest in our company's history
Clos du Mont-Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape | France 2017$175.00
Producer: Clos du Mont-Olivet. Region: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône. Varietal(s): Cinsault (Cinsaut), Grenache (standard), Mourvedre (Monastrell), Syrah. Varietal % Breakdown: 70% Grenache, 12% Syrah, 12% Mourvèdre, 5% Cinsault, Vaccarèse, Muscardin, Terret Noir, Picpoul Noir. There's no Cuvée du Papet (their top cuvee) this year as yields were too low, so all that fruit went into this wine instead. It has a mix of spice and flowers on the nose, leading into a full-bodied palate packed full of juicy, concentrated berry fruits. A vibrant acid line and mineral sheen bring remarkable freshness and energy to the tight tannic frame, coming to a crescendo - it's a really thrilling wine
Bosquet des Papes 'Cuvee Chante le Merle' Châteauneuf-du-Pape | France 2012$200.00

Chateau Musar Rouge 1974$775.00
Producer: Chateau Musar. Region: Bekaa Valley, Lebanon. Varietal(s): Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan (Carignano), Cinsault (Cinsaut). A higher than usual alcohol content suggests more fermentable sugars in the grapes – something we weren't to see again until many years later with the 2012 vintage, however unlike that year the 1974 was much more delicate in its youth and wasn't to develop its character until a longer spell ageing in the Chateau Musar cellars at Ghazir had passed. After around two weeks of maceration, the fermented wines are racked into 225 litre Bordeaux-style barrels made of Nevers oak and matured for up to twelve months. Each component was then blended together. At this stage, the assemblage had greater proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Carignan; the Cinsault element was to increase in later years

Tempranillo
Bodegas Muga Reserva | Spain 2014
Producer: Bodega Muga. Region: Barrio de la Estación, Haro, Rioja Alta. Varietal(s): Garnacha (Grenache), Tempranillo. Varietal % Breakdown: 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, 7% Mazuelo, 3% Graciano. A tidy half-sized bottle of a sturdy and rich Rioja Reserva. Leather and dark red fruits, with good oak backbone
- 375ml$55.00
La Rioja Alta 'Gran Reserva 904' Spain 2010$190.00
Producer: La Rioja Alta. Region: Rioja. Varietal(s): Tempranillo. Varietal % Breakdown: 90% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano. We consider this vintage one of the best of the century. The reasons are very propitious weather allowing the vines to be in excellent condition, both in terms of development and health-wise, and very moderate production due to some shatter during flowering. The result was very loose, medium-sized clusters with small berries. This vintage can be classified as one of the most Atlantic in recent years, allowing for wines of great freshness and complexity, optimal for long barrel aging. This vintage was officially rated Excellent as well
Bodegas Vega Sicilia 'Único' Spain 2007$666.00
Producer: Bodegas Vega-Sicilia. Region: Castilla y León. Sub Region: Ribera del Duero. Varietal(s): Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo. The 2007 vintage of this extraordinary wine was released earlier than the traditional 10 years, as the light, cool and fresh vintage was ready to drink. It's only gotten better with a couple years in the bottle, and is drinking beautifully. This harmonious red is balanced and deep, offering ripe plum and currant flavors, with black pepper, tobacco, licorice and mineral accents. Delivers plenty of structure, with well-integrated tannins and lively acidity. The wine remains graceful through the long, spicy finish. Drink now through 2027
Tinta Barroca
Sadie Family 'Treinspoor' South Africa 2016$88.00
Producer: Sadie Family. Region: Swartland. Varietal(s): Tinta Barroca. Named for the railway line the vineyard lays next to, this is a rare example of the complexity of old vine Tinto Barocca. Darker color, firmer acidity and bigger structure than the grape normally suggests, with black tea and star anise notes on top
Zinfandel
Chateau Montelena Calistoga Zinfandel | United States 2015$104.00
Producer: Chateau Montelena. Region: Calistoga, Napa Valley, CA. Varietal(s): Zinfandel. Montelena is primarily know for the classic Cab-and-Chard Napa output, but their Zinfandel is an extraordinarily pretty and crafted example of California's O.G. red grape. Light spice and bright red fruits, balanced delicately. Poised and bright
Turley 'Fredericks Vineyard' Zinfandel | United State 2015
Producer: Turley. Region: Moon Mountain AVA, Sonoma Valley, CA. Varietal(s): Zinfandel. A great vintage from a gem of a vineyard, almost a thousand feet up the Mayacamas and almost on the border of Napa. Full-bodied, with dark stonefruits and cassis over red cherries
