Really beautiful old farmhouse. Duck was really tough cooked medium rare and sauce was good but not great. The monkfish with farro was outstanding and the farmhouse salad was really good . We will try the bar seating upstairs next time .

I love going to Primo for special occasions. It is a bit pricy for every day, but every bite is beautiful to look at and delicious to eat. The wait staff is superb: very knowledgeable and friendly. The atmosphere is lovely: old victorian farm house with many cozy corners and beautifully decorated. And, I truly appreciate the organic farm to table ethic and experience.

The entree that Primo is noted for- the Primo Pork Chop was mushy and was covered with fat. For a $48 entree it was very disappointing. The waiter was lovely but he did not want to take it back and replace it with another dish.

Similarly, the pasta we ordered was doughy and not hot.

As Primo is known for fine dining and we had come in from Washington, DC, we had high expectations only to be surprised and shocked at the overall poor quality of the food.

The restaurant and ambiance are beautiful, but that's not what fine dining is all about, is it?

Fois Gras on a gingerbread with cooked apple and chutney - out of this world. Scallops were huge and cooked perfectly, duck and lamb were also wonderful. Love the Zenzero (ginger cosmo). We asked for a banquette instead of a table as we had a 4 year old with us. We thankfully were seated at the requested table.

Overall a very good dining experience. Incredibly fresh salad greens in November was impressive. Our server was top notch and fun which added to the experience. Negatives were my wife's steak being badly overcooked and my duck breast being a bit tough, both of which diminished the experience and had us questioning the value.

It was a delayed birthday celebration dinner. As usual, everything was wonderful. One of the very best restaurants in Maine, if not the best. We've been a half a dozen times for special occasions and will surely return again.

We had been interested in Primo for quite sometime and finally made it up to Rockland for a visit this past weekend. Very good wine options and some great local beers as well. Started with roasted oysters and the farmers frisee salad - salad was excellent, oysters were good. The house-raised Primo Pork Chop was phenomenal, so flavorful and cooked perfectly. Seared Ahi Tuna was done perfectly and was amazing, roasted root vegetables were a nice side too. The house made profiteroles filled with gelato were excellent, would definitely try them again. They also brought us a tasting glass of house pressed cider with cream which was quite tasty it left me wanting more. Service was excellent as we were tended to by at least 3 staff members during our visit. Dinner at Primo definitely lived up to the high expectations we had in mind.

Primo was definitely a good special occasion place to try. The restaurant itself is beautiful, located in a huge old house with lots of different rooms. The farm to table, organic produce and meat concept here is excellent. Food is fresh and tasty. Desserts here are a must, the zeppole were amazing. The service was good (not great). The wine list was excellent, lots of different countries and regions. Overall not the best meal I've had in Maine, but definitely worth a try.

We had a lovely anniversary dinner. As per their usual, the staff was amazing, the food was outstanding-on site grown or locally sourced and absolutely delicious. Primo never disappoints. We had skate, octopus, oysters, some of their home raised chicken, and carrots, cauliflower, delicata squash, broccoli and potatoes from the garden. We still managed to squeeze in profiteroles for dessert.

Going to "Primo" was a bucket list trip to experience the work of acclaimed Chef Melissa Kelly. Let me just say that she and her staff knocked it out of the park on every level. We ate at Primo two nights and it was difficult to chose from the menu offerings... I wanted to taste everything! Signature dish of Pork Saltimbocca was stunning and packed with flavor. Foie Gras was a magnificent appetizer that went down perfectly with a glass of prosecco. The special entre of fresh skate tasted like it just came out of the clean and clear Rockland waters. It was so incredibly fresh and the lemony sauce and fall vegetables were cooked to a turn... not hard, not soft, .... just perfect. Farmers salad is a French classic that I could eat everyday. The greens grown at Primo just taste so delicious... you can see it in the color and taste the earthyness.
Deserts also were a smash hit with my group. Profiteroles were the bomb and I only wish I could have taken home a suit case of Zeppole.
Lastly, I cannot say enough about the staff and Chef Kelly. They were so inviting and made this foodie's travel adventure a most memorable trip. Cannot wait to return!

We have been waiting for the perfect time to dine here and finally were able to be in the area. So pleased we were able to visit. The food and service were impeccable. I enjoyed a fabulous hand made ravioli with 2 cheeses and lighly spiced pork ragu... it was heavenly. We also enjoyed a delicious duck entree. I will be back for sure!

Worth the drive from, well, anywhere. Farm to table food was exceptional. Creative menu - didn't try everything but I'd like to. Even though restaurant was full, most of the tables are in small rooms so conversation (even with Grandparents) not a problem. Bar was lively - bartenders and waitstaff attentive and helpful.

We first ate here in Nov of 2013 and were absolutely blown away by the level of skill and quality of the entire dining experience, this visit not so much. The meals overall were good, but not knocking our socks off as anticipated, a couple dishes lacked real flavor/salt even. And where as we had never used the online reservations, we thought we would have been seated in the table cloth area as we dressed up but instead were placed in a pub style setting with plastic place mats and we were underwhelmed by the casual dress of the other patrons. Not sure how to request the table cloth seating, it was not an option when booking the reservation. For the cost, the value is too low, despite the intense hands on approach and origins of the ingredients, the dishes them selves lacked the pow of flavor and inventiveness we first experienced.

A very lovely meal! Quiet and cosy atmosphere.
We shared a roasted beet salad as an appetizer that was perfect. Fresh greens with house made ricotta and local red and golden beets. My main course was the scallops with black Tuscan rice and roasted cauliflower. It was a delight! Beautiful presentation and done to perfection.
My husband had the grilled swordfish with fingerling potatoes grilled eggplant and mixed peppers. He was very pleased. The service was excellent and the staff was friendly, knowledgeable and efficient.

What a disappointment. We drove all the way from NY for this restaurant, we build the whole weekend around it and we didn't enjoy a bit of it. Everything took forever: wine bottle took time to arrive, appetizers took 1 hour to arrive, apologies also were late. We are heavy drinkers and eaters and we lost appetite. We didn't even drink. We sat down at 7pm and had dinner a little after 9pm. We tried to be as pleasant as possible, but makes me quite angry, how easy it is to ruin somebody evening and how easy it is to fix but how difficulty it is to actually do it. Let me tell you about this farm to table idea. I knew about this because I read about it. Not even once server or food runner said anything about ingredients. I felt no respect for food here, no grace, something you feel in these type establishment. Food runner was just dropping food at the table (once they arrived) without saying or announcing anything like in roadside diner. Taste was something else. How dare you to overcook pappardelle or not season Bolognese sauce. there was no salt or pepper on tables and no sight of server either. My friend and I, ate only half of our meals, did anyone ask why someone is not finishing $30 dish?? Overall over hyped and over priced. Would not recommend to anyone I love.

We had heard about Primo, and a fortunate invitation to speak at a conference brought my husband and me to the Rockland area. Primo more than met our expectations and exceeded them in all regards - with one exception. We found our server to be somewhat patronizing and a bit of a snob. There were three separate occasions in which we felt he was judgemental and/or delivering a lecture (one regarding a question I asked about the menu, one regarding a query about restroom facilities and see my tip below). Too bad, as while we left a bit over 20% as a tip, we generally leave more; however we felt while the service was technically professional, it was given grudgingly.

Tip - if your server has an accent don't ask if he is an Aussie - he is not. You will soon discover he is a condescending New Zealander who does not like being mistaken for an Australian and the resulting resentment seems to linger throughout the dining experience.

I booked dinner at Primos for my girlfriends birthday and planned a weekend around it. We arrived early and were directed upstairs to the bar where we immediately found to open chairs. We ordered the octopus and a couple of specialty cocktails which were amazing.

We then were seated a little a earlier and had an amazingly romantic dinner with exceptional service. We wanted to return the next day for more of the tasty menu but our budget would not allow it.

We will definitely be returning next season.

Thank you for taking care of all the details of fine dining!

I have had nothing but praise for this restaurant. However, we did have an unpleasant experience with their seating. We had made a reservation well in advance and when we arrived we spotted an open table in our desired area. We were told that we could not have THAT particular table because others had confirmed their reservation and were thus expected. We had confirmed also. And that there were no other available tables in that room (though there appeared to be). We are middle age and one of our group was, shall we say, a "senior." We were shepherded into the most formal and what I would call least lively of the rooms -- which, lo and behold, was occupied by ONLY elderly couples. The whole thing had an unseemly feel to it, no doubt exacerbated by the unsmiling and curt hostess. Lessons learned -- from now on, we will take our chances and head straight upstairs to the bars!

I expected too much from this restaurant, and I think that's why it came up a little short. The ambiance and setting in an old farmhouse was charming, and the kitchen looked dreamy to work in. The service was par for this type of establishment, but every glass of wine was just a little behind the course. When wine is an important part of the meal, timing is everything. The farm to table experience is not lost on me, and though I expect the nature of the ingredient to highlight the dish, a little more flair (flavor!) from the chef would have made the ingredients really sing. All in all, it was a lovely experience, I just left a little underwhelmed.

Perhaps it was because our expectations were so high to begin with, but our dinner experience was disappointing overall. The restaurant is in a converted house, so there are several "dining rooms" throughout with very tight seating. This made it difficult for guests and staff to maneuver through the rooms comfortably.

Our waiter was affable and knowledgeable, but clearly oversold the lobster special which ended up being fairly bland and woefully short on lobster meat. He'd made it sound like an entire shelled lobster would be on the plate when in reality it was a sea of whole wheat pasta topped by several tiny butternut squash cubes, two small claws and some knuckle meat; no tail meat at all.

Likewise, the panzerotti appetizer lacked flavor and was largely forgettable. The bread and fish soup was a better choice; it was flavorful with a slightly spicy zing, but also suffered from an under-abundance of fish. Our other entree -- grilled swordfish -- was cooked perfectly and accompanied by a delicious slice of grilled eggplant and fingerling potatoes. However, I couldn't help thinking the fish's seasoning tasted nearly identical to the jar of Chef Paul Prudhomme's Seafood Magic we have in our pantry.

By comparison, our dinner the night before at the Samoset Resort's La Bella Vita restaurant was
nothing short of outstanding. We'll definitely be dining at the Samoset again on our next visit to the Rockland/Rockport area.
