Prime - West Des Moines Ratings and Reviews
Since they just opened, I am willing to give it a second chance, but will wait until things have settled down. Our server was not able to keep up with what was going on. We waited at least 10 minutes, just to get water. She didn't know the menu at all. The food was mediocre at best. Salad dressing was supposed to be creamy parmesan, but tasted like plain mayonnaise. Salad greens were limp. Chicken sandwich was overcooked and dry. French fries were lukewarm. Requests for additional items went unanswered.
Short version: Some hiccups, but likely because they are relatively new and still getting their footing. Worth a second visit. Longer version: This is a newer steakhouse in West Des Moines. Menu is pretty standard steakhouse fare, solid but nothing particularly inventive. Appetizer of deviled egg selection was tasty and interesting, but salads were forgettable. Steaks were good and cooked properly, but the sides of green beans and fries were boring. There were other sides noted on the menu on an a la carte basis, but our server didn't ask if we wanted to substitute any of them. Service was a mixed bag. We had a reservation. When we arrived there was no host/hostess. A waiter told us to wait, then a couple minutes later took us to a table. We had to grab a drink menu from a neighboring table. It took nearly ten minutes for our waitress to greet us. After that, there were lengthy delays in getting our cocktails, apps, and entrees. Our waitress was very friendly and cheerful, just wish she had been more attentive and moved things along at a more typical pace. Dinner ended up taking over two hours, when we were expecting it to be an hour or so. Still, although it wasn't a top-notch experience, it was still a good dinner. We'll be back to give them a second look.
Had a business meeting on a Tuesday night. Parking lot was nearly empty. Only saw one other couple having dinner there at the same time. Ordered the shrimp cocktail. The shrimp were unremarkable -grocery store grade. The cocktail sauce had solidified a bit and needed to be stirred in order to dip the shrimp in it. I had hoped the sauce would have included some fresh horseradish but it tasted pretty basic with a hint of horseradish. My entree was the aged ribeye medium rare with truffle butter sauce. The steak was perfectly cooked but not as delicious as I had hoped for aged meat. Fries were ok but I'm a fan of fresh cut fries which these were not. Ordered the chocolate bread pudding w/ ice cream dessert. Was the smallest piece of bread pudding I've ever had at about 1.5" X 3". You could tell it was a few days old and had been barely microwaved to give it what little heat it had. Disappointing end to a very average meal.
This was restaurant week and the menus were created for that. I found the steak very grisly and hard to cut from the bone! But this restaurant was not alone in making a poor decision in the cut selected. I had this same cut elsewhere and it was poor too. A filet would have been a better choice. The sauce was outstanding.
Shared dinner with my husband and my friend on a late Friday evening, during Restaurant Week. The risotto entree came over cooked and lumpy. The two S'mores desserts were very large and rich, but the marshmallows (which we were told were broiled in the oven) were extremely burnt. The blackened fish entree was cooked appropriately and was very good. The deviled egg appetizer came with three flavors of deviled eggs, and while not overly imaginative, was tasty. Sadly, we won't be in a hurry to rush back, however as some of the staff servers left something to be desired (care, attention). We did have a very helpful lady serving our table and I appreciated her help and guidance.
Ordered salmon which was very good taste and portion size. The sides of green beans and potatoes were also tasty but skimpy. Potatoes are cheap and more would have been nice especially since no bread or rolls are served prior to main course. Service was good but Miller Lite was not on the menu so alas we will not be back.😞
By 9:15pm we were the last people there and felt like we needed to wrap it up quickly since the waiter had stopped coming around and no one was to be seen. Good food but not someplace I feel I want to rush back to given the prices, setting, and service issues.
The trout was outstanding. Interesting menu with a nice variety of options. The chef visited our table and asked if we were satisfied with our meal, which we all appreciated. There were a number of steak choices and a nice selection of pork, poultry and fish items.
We had a fantastic evening at prime. It seems as though some of their dishes don't coordinate well. For example, the pickled vegetable flatbread was phenomenal, but didn't really fit with the rest of the meal. The wine list was good, but not great. All in all, a wonderful meal great service.
We went for burgers thinking that was a good way to check it out without committing to a full steak dinner. I mistakenly assumed a steakhouse would have a great burger. We were disappointed with the quality of the food in each course, especially for the pricing and I do not mind paying for quality food. Service was ok.
At a steakhouse called "Prime"....one could expect that prime cut steaks would be served....not so. $40 fillet not prime over cooked the first time, then they tried to butterfly it to cook a second steak quicker. Service was extremely slow. Did have a nice atmosphere.
This is the third time we have been there. The food has been excellent each time but the service is poor. The waitress does not remember to bring drinks, bread, etc. and have to ask her numerous times. This has happened each time we have been there. I will have a hard to recommending the restaurant due to the service.
