Prepkitchen - La Jolla Ratings and Reviews
The experience at PrepKitchen La Jolla was a bit mixed. I enjoyed our tempura cauliflower appetizer, though my boyfriend felt it was on the saltier side. He had a meat based dish which he said was very good, but unfortunately I wasn't blown away by my fish meal. Our server had talked it up as one of his favorite dishes, but unfortunately it didn't match what I had hoped. The fish was the daily catch, a fresh bass cooked to perfection. I didn't realize it was a red sauce preparation though, and I don't usually like red sauces with fish. On top of it was a sweet pepper type topping, and unfortunately I prefer salty over sweet. Overall the service was amazing (they gave us a free and amazing cake slice for a very minor table confusion that didn't bother us at all too much) and while I wasn't thrilled with my food I do believe it was simply a matter of taste preferences. I'd definitely try to go again to try something else.
We were never asked for our drink order until we were asked for our food order & it took a long time after we were seated with a reservation for this to happen. Our food was good & everyone said they would order the same thing again but the service was poor.
The staff at Prep Kitchen were so friendly and helpful! My friend and I went for my birthday dinner. Even though they were closing at about 9:30 pm, they let us stay a little longer and didn't rush us at all, which was really nice of them. Five stars for sure! I plan on coming back.
Food was great. Service was friendly, and food came out in a reasonable amount of time. But, wow, getting the waiter to come back to your table was super frustrating! Waited to order wine way too long, waited to order dinner too long, and waited to order dessert. Our server had tables all over the place, yet others seemed to be only mildly busy. Still a nice place to go for a casual dinner - if you're super patient.
Excellent food and what a great little covered patio. Really enjoyed the food and the setting. The service was pretty slow, but it was friendly and accurate. I would come back here again, some of the menu items are fantastic (bacon wrapped dates and chilaquiles)!
Overall the food was good. I had roasted cauliflower, which was just ok. My wife had the chicken, which was outstanding.
It's a small place with a lot of outdoor seating. On a nice sunny day, I imagine the ambiance would be terrific. When we were there, it wasn't a nice sunny day.
Food is very mediocre, unsure why it's rated so highly. Had the pasta...about the same quality as Buca de Beppo or Olive Garden. Salad was bland. Patatas bravas was decent. Service is very good. Bread tastes average. Had Sangria drink which was "ok." But pretty expensive for the quality and quantity of food offered.
We make it a point to eat at Prep Kitchen whenever we travel down to the San Diego area to visit our kids in college. We are never disappointed in their seasonal menu; even our vegan friends found satisfying entrees among the squid ink pasta, Mary's roast chicken and the delectable short ribs (I've had all three) that were offered the two nights we were there. And yes, we were there two nights in a row.
