Portuscalle Ratings and Reviews
The cod fritters - yum!
The prawns in garlic - yum!
The mixed seafood (calamari, prawns, clams, etc...) grilled with butter and garlic - SUPER YUM!
The wines are all Portuguese wines and each one I sampled was delicious. Ample selections to pair well with your meal.
The guys who run the place are professional, welcoming and debonair! I will remember my meal at Portuscalle and will return on the next "visite à Montréal."
We went with kids for a dinner. The food was yummy, service was great and very attentive, we had a small issue with the one of the appetizers and the situation was handled perfectly by the stuff. They have place to leave your coats which is very comfortable in winter days. The Portuguese wines were delicious.
I have dined at Portus Calle several times over the years. The food is still very good but I find that the Tapas offering changed from small simple portions to large and more complex servings. The idea of taking several tapas before the main course is no longer an alternative. You can choose to forego the main course and only enjoy the variety of 5-6 Tapas servings to go with a good wine and it would be quite filling. The servers did not warn us about the size of the Tapas servings. I also found that the fish we ordered for the main course, although delicious, was not very warm and was served with a large selection of vegetables that detracted from the savor of the fish.
Food was great service was out of this world. Visited with my wife, and two kids (5 and 4 years old) for my birthday. The kids were treated like royalty. They were promised dessert if they finished their food, then they were given ice cream and custom made cookies on the house. They were allowed to go meet the pastry chef and head chef. Smiles all around, and extreme patience from the waiter and maitre d'. Would recommend and would go back without hesitation!
We wanted to try some fine Portuguese food and decided to go to Portuscalle. We were very pleased over-all. Delicious food, especially the fish, beautiful decor which makes you feel like you're in Europe and not on St-Laurent Blvd. The service was outstanding (our waitress was Roxanne) and she was very accommodating and knowledgable. They also have a great wine list. The chef & owner was very present amongst her diners/clients and definitely showed an interest in her guests experience. We would definitely go back...especially for the fish!
I am surprised at the number of reviews harshly criticizing the service at Portuscalle - our recent experience couldn't have been more different. Granted, it was a Thursday evening and the restaurant was less than half full. Nevertheless, we were greeted warmly (and forgivingly of our limited French), and the service throughout the evening was prompt, attentive and considerate. Waitress went the extra mile when they happened to be out of our selected wine, offering tastes of several alternatives until we were satisfied with the replacement. Amuse bouche, bread, soup and small plates all arrived quickly - there was a bit of time before the main course arrived (as appropriate for its preparation), but the Arroz de Marisco was worth the wait, containing a full half-lobster in addition to 4-6 each of prawns, mussels, clams and calamari, each cooked to perfection; often in such dishes the smaller items are way overdone. (Unless you have a huge appetite suggest that this dish be shared by at least two!) The quality of all of the food was excellent, perhaps a little short of outstanding in inventiveness but flavorful and satisfying nonetheless. We'd definitely go back.
Having been to this restaurant many times, I was very disappointed with my last visit.
We had to call for the attention of our waiter(s) every time there was action/service needed. There was a time when tremendous attention was given to the client.
Our food arrived after an unusually long wait, cooled down, not as tasty as before and after two hours, our party of four decided we had enough. Paid the bill and left. I suspect that my guests and I will not be back for some time.
Saturday Night with Wife and 2 kids. Tapas were fantastic. Wife ordered seafood bullabaise and they brought the $70 seafood dinner for two. I got the seafood with rice. great dish. lobster, clams, mussels, calamari etc. sangria. daughter got steak and loved it. waiter credited the bill for the overcharge on the wrong dish. all together $250 + tip but well worth it. food was cooked perfectly. service was great. definitely would go back again next time we're in montreal.
Alas, this restaurant is now closed. My family and I were regular patrons of Portus Calle. Certainly a much better choice in comparison to Helena Loureiro's other restaurants: Helena & Portus 360. Our experience at Helena was awful (see my Helena review). To this day, we've never returned to Helena but recently decided to try Portus 360. I can't seem to be able to write a review of Portus 360 since the restaurant has to 'validate' our reservation and it never did for whatever reason. Not surprised, considering the service there was possibly one of the worst in my life....very unorganized and unprofessional. Portus 360 is located where the once "Tour de Ville" restaurant used to be. The view is astonishing and that's all Portus 360 really has to offer. The noise level in there was excruciating deafening. For whatever incomprehensible reason, the loud music seems to be a trend in all Loureiro's establishments. Other common negative features are the lack of professional servers, time management, food quality and quantity. Now, I know we all have our opinions, but when ALL the negative reviews have similar experiences, well, you would think Helena would step up to the plate (so to speak) and make the necessary changes & improvements.
We will never go back to Portus 360, nor to Helena for that matter. I'm disappointed that Helena seems to focus more on $$$$ than on quality. Being portuguese myself, I wanted chef Helena Loureiro to shine. Unfortunately, all I felt the other evening was disappointment, embarrassment & anger. I regret having invited my non-portuguese friends for supper there.
Delicious food, good service, good choices on the menu for us since we do not eat meat. Ambiance was dynamic. Restaurant was very full when we left but the noise level was conducive to conversation. We will be going back for sure and recommending this place to our friends.
Normally good, freshness (on a Tuesday evening) was not this time prevalent. The oysters were so-so and the whole fish we ordered were overcooked and bathed in too many concoctions to be appreciated. I was at Maison Boulud for lunch the following day, now this is what oysters should look and taste like. I will not return.
