Portucale Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
We were thankfully able to make a last minute reservation here after the restaurant we wer initially planning on going to had an hour wait and we had concert tickets. What a great find. The sangria was great. We had shrimp in garlic sauce which was excellent. I had steak Portucale was was delicious. Everyone else really likes their food too. Parking was tight. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.
We were in that area at the Prudential Center, it was a close place and a shot in the dark. Food was good, huge portion size. The prices were reasonable. Looked like there was a nice patio area outside, it looked like it would be nice to eat out there during the warmer months. Our waiter was friendly and very helpful. They could find my reservation and accommodated us right away. Overall really we enjoyed our experience there, We would recommend it.
I travel a bunch and try and eat at very good restaurants with a cultural aspect or variety and I can honestly say that the Portucale restaurant is a great place that will not disappoint you I have enjoyed 4 meals there in the past week and they have exceeded my expectations in all areas!
only one waiter in our area, dinner took over 2 hours, our waiter had about 10 tables, our table was 6 another one was for 8, they should have had at least 2 waiters and a helper in our room, looked like they had another room and no idea if they had more help in that room. food was good and we had a groupon, which made it a great deal. the meal still came out to almost $200 with groupon included. my meal was ok, everyone else loved there melas, would consider trying it again, but if i see one waiter for the one section, i think i will leave
The food portions are HUGE and delicious! Very well priced for what you receive, the app was delicious although wish we would've skipped it because couldn't finish our entrees! Definitely recommend the white sangria 😬
Side note: our opentable reservation ended up not going through so when we walked in on a very busy night and found this out we were quite worried but they ended up seating us within 5 minutes and service was still excellent!
We were looking for a Portuguese restaurant for dinner for our family before the Devils game. The food was so fantastic that we are looking forward to returning. For the calamari appetizer the rings were very tender and yummy with an excellent marinara sauce. Our children had the filet mignon from the children's menu and loved it. Also we had two types of paella that were outstanding. The paella portions were huge. The dishes were so flavorful and the shellfish was cooked perfectly. This restaurant has an excellent chef. We can't wait to go back.
Parking situation is horrible but there is a parking lot if you can find it on the side street. Our waiter wasn't very talkative and not personable at all. Didn't even great you when you walked in or welcome you to the restaurant. Food was average...nothing great. The ambiance was nice though.
Six of us went to Portucale to celebrate Portugal winning the soccer game against France. Service was friendly, but definitely not the fastest. We were not in a hurry, so it did't matter. Wine list is very affordable with good choices. Two of my friends had the caesar salad with chicken which was very dry. We saved the chicken and made a nice chicken salad the next day. I ordered the octopus on the regular menu and that was WONDERFUL. Not only there was a lot of meat, it was amazingly tender. I would come back to Newark just for that octopus again. I guess, if you are in a Portuguese restaurant, you should order Portuguese food!!
We went with a Grupon to try it out and will be back. The service was excellent and our waiter helped with food selections and wine. He also told us about the different regional cuisines of Portugal. The octopus appetizer was very tender (too much so for our taste) but Rey flavorful. The mardicada with green sauce was excellent and include rd a half lobster. The sauce is cilantro rather parsley based. Mussels were la be, and perfectly cooked. We also had the pan seared red snapper which was tasty and beautifully presented. The rice is served with peas and peppers which are overdone.
There is a small parking lot just down the street. Necessary as on street parking is difficult.
This restaurant is about the bar scene, not the dining room. The waiter while nice, did not know what the Portucale sauce was--the house special sauce that appeared throughtout the menu. We stopped asking questions after that.
The fire detector went off throughout our meal. No effort was made to apologize for this as management was in the other room (the bar) and that room was buzzing with patrons and already loud. Wecouldn't leave fast enough.
The meat was horrible. They use poor cuts. The seafood dishes were excellent, particularly the house clam appetizer and the paella.
The sangria was terrific and thank goodness for it.
Apparently this was a slow night because we were initially alone and then one other couple came in and that was it for the night, although there were several patrons sitting at the bar, which was separate from the dining room. There was lots of choices on the menu and helpful descriptions were given. The food was tasty and quite plentiful (the salad was huge and was definitley not meant for just one person). The service was very good.
