Ports O Call Ratings and Reviews
Place needs to be remodeled. Otherwise, the food was great. Service was awesome. Value outstanding. The view of the water and ships/boats passing is relaxing and interesting. Simply outstanding. And not very crowded. Was a hotspot 35 years ago when I proposed to my wife here, but without any building or even cosmetic improvements, this place has been forgotten by most. Nonetheless, definitely a hidden gem.
The food was delicious -- I had the blackened salmon, my husband had scallops. And my red wine was a nice big size! Dinner by the window, looking at the harbor was great.
Just one piece of opinionated advice: the bread pudding could lose the chocolate sauce. Definitely not New Orleans style. Exchange the chocolate for a nice bourbon sauce!
I have been coming to Ports O' Call since the 1960s and it was a real treat to be back. Keep this restaurant!!!!!!!
Ports O Call is a wonderful, classic San Pedro place. There are so many great things about it , the view, the patio, the variety of seating options that also include bar and dining room, regular dining room with enormous happy hour. The view, the mix of locals, the happy hour, the diverse menu, lots of beer/wine/cocktails. I do think the food is a little overpriced for what it is; there is definitely a seafood/finer dining quality to the menu, but I find some of the items lacking just a wee bit in terms of preparation, taste. The portions are not always consistent - for instance I ordered linguine with scallops - which was delicious, but there were four scallops smallish size scallops and a mountain of linguine. I've had the salmon, short rib, those were good. I like that they offer fish preparation a variety of ways. The appetizers are good (though I would prefer another option besides tri-color tortilla chips for dips and such), salads, burgers; I find this mostly an occasional issue with dinner entrees. It's a great place to sit, you can enjoy complimentary music, the patio has heaters/fire pit; from the bar seating you can get window views, but this area is noisier and has a lot of TVs; or choose the dining room upstairs. I think the kitchen could use just a little more polish in prep, but I love this place, always bring people!
Perfect location and ambiance for a get together with friends. The service and view were excellent!! The food was outstanding! We had the self serve salad bar and there were a large selection of items and everything was fresh! I highly recommend this quaint and historic restaurant!!
This restaurant was just wonderful. The waiter was really on top on things. The food presentation was beautiful and the food taste was great! We were there celebrating our 23rd wedding anniversary and they gave us a free cheesecake for dessert! My husband had a cajon Bloody Mary, I wish I had taken a picture! It was fantastic!
Went there for a casual lunch. What a dump. Dusty old shellshell lamp shades, no hostess,
bartender cannot make a decent martini, or margarita. The highlight was the salad bar, it was clean, beautiful, and had lots of items to choose from. Server was okay, but she was bored by having zero customers. Incredible view of the waterfront. Huge banquet room, everyone else was prepping for that day. Seafood was average at best, my salmon was dry and overcooked. Pity. Cannot imagine ever returning.
Went down to Ports of Call to see US Navy ships in for fleet week. This was a place we used to frequent 20+ years ago. Would never go back. The restaurant had a very tired appearance, looked dirty and the outside patio had the odor of overcooked cabbage. As we had driven so far we decided to stay and eat - which is exactly what we did then went home. NO reason to linger!
Completely disappointed. We took our toddler and asked for his food first. We ended up getting his last, after all of the adults had finished half of their plates, along with the pre dinner bread basket. Food had no flavor and for 3 people and a child, it was well over $120. I told the manager after we paid the bill and I got a simple apology...no questions about how the service could have been better or even an offer for an appetizer to get us to try them again. Poor customer service. Don't waste your time or money.
The service was the worst we ever experienced , we got seated at a dirty table at the bar area, the tables next to us was dirty as well never got cleaned till after an hour, the waitress could not describe any menu items, she forget to place our whole stripped base order, never got us plates for our appetizer of steamed clams to place the shells in, never cleaned the plates after we were done eating, only when we asked her she cleared some plates and left the rest of the plates on the table, continousley disapeared, we could not find to order, the table next to us asked if there is a waitress. She dropped two espresso and the saucers were full of coffe did not bring sugar or sweetener until we asked her, did not bring spoons to steer the coffee, it was the worse we ever had. The food was good the stripped base was delicious.
Ports O Call is a reliable waterfront dining venue, and the entrees frequently boarder on excellent. The table waiting staff always does their utmost to see that we are satisfied. They do their best to advise on selection, they keep glasses filled, and the orders are correctly taken and rapidly served.
And, just today the table wait staff went above and beyond by taking care of a tipping error that I made, before I even called to ask for the correction.
I'd double tipped. When I got home and realized the error, I called the restaurant to request a correction, and found that Manny, our waiter, had already taken care of the problem. I checked at my credit card website, and sure enough the charge was for the correct amount, not the double tipped amount. Very attentive, and appreciated.
Ports of Call has been refreshed. Front desk is unfriendly and far from welcoming. The menu is all too safe and uninteresting --- but fine for standards. Did very much enjoy the buffalo chicken bites. Service was ok, friendly but this is far from fine dining. Bar was adequate. Wine list very pedestrian.
Long and short of it, you go for the view. Not the food.
This restaurant has certainly seen better days and is long overdue for a renovation. The service was acceptable but not polished. The food was fine but nothing to write home about. It was quite overpriced for what it was. This could be a very nice waterfront restaurant but a major overhaul is needed to make it a worthwhile option. I won't be rushing back.
Nice view off the water , busy good band . They sat us in a nice table near the water on the patio. The service was slow took about a half an hour to order our food as I think the waitress forgot about us . They may have been shorthanded as service was very slow . But food was excellent .
