Way too noisy - we had to leave because it was just too loud. Food was mediocre, service too. Going downhill.
Won’t be back even tho we’re longtime regulars.
Off menu seafood specials are good. Get a booth if you can -- more comfortable than the chairs that I didn't think were that comfortable. Berry crisp dessert is good and perfect for splitting between two people.
Consistently delicious food. It is always a treat to eat at Portola Kitchen. One of my favorite local places to eat.
Food was excellent but service lacked expertise. Requests were forgotten on several occasions.
We really enjoyed our Mother's Day dinner there and it was nice to see so many other families with little and big kids enjoying it, too. I only gave a 4 for service because it seemed a little slow but I also think that may have been due to the multiple large parties they had for Mother's Day.
Mother’s Day Brunch
Very noisy- 85-86dB
Service very slow: 40-45 minutes to receive tepid soup.
Tomato bisque with garnishes could have come from Safeway soup counter.
Seared ahi with salsa & avocado. Novel but salsa overwhelmed the other two primary ingredients. May as well have been salsa on toast.
Gratuitous sausage and bacon in far too many dishes. Who designed this menu? Why? Scratch those items, and it’s a very limited menu.
Had to chase the server for grated cheese for pasta. He simply delivered it to the table and dashed.
We’d really like this to be a viable, enjoyable local resource.
Food & service need work. Possibly short staffed that night - both in the kitchen and on the floor?
Lovely to sit outdoors and enjoy a good meal in Theo neighborhood spot. Food could have been a bit hotter, but it was a busy night.
Pasta is excellent. Love the ambience and the service is top notch. Very friendly and welcoming environment.
Excellent service, and great food, wine, and beer selections.
Noisy and busy on Friday nights. Food and inside service were great. Band outside with heaters also good.
Really nice menu, good service, good food and almost everyone is dressed very casually. IME it's rare to find the higher quality of good and service in a casual environment. Great when you want a good meal but don't want to dress up.
Very casual feel and excellent food in a small-town shopping center. Great experience, will probably return.
I like the feeling of openness in this restaurant. The server was very pleasant. The pizza with pesto and sausage was delicious and big enough for two to share. My friend enjoyed the chicken salad. We will return.
Always meet here with a special friend for lunch, and it has only gotten better over the years. Great menu and wine selection. Also unpretentious atmosphere for an otherwise pretentious community!
Superior service. The food was excellent as usual.
I usually order the pizzas which have always been really good. However, I had the calamari and mista salade. The calamari was hard and chewy and the salad was made from old lettuce. My colleague had the seafood salad which looked wonderful and she enjoyed it. Not sure if I would recommend it for anything other than pizzas.
We hadn't been to Portola Kitchen in over a year and were very impressed with the new menu and wine list. Both were extensive and delicious with a wide variety of daily specials and wines by the glass. We also forgot how close they are to downtown Palo Alto and most of Silicon Valley. Our new favorite place is only minutes from 280. We also learned that Mike (owner guy) is about to reopen his Midtown Palo Alto restaurant on Middlefied Rd. very soon with more space, opulence, and the same great cuisine prepared by the same staff as Portola Kitchen. Everything is great, but someone has to try the prawns!
The hostess was vert accommodating for us and gave a quiet booth so we could have conversations more privately. Meals are always good here.
Be warned- they have a separate booking process for their booths, which we didn’t know, so even though we had reservations and there were two booths open, they were reluctant to seat us. We had to complain twice before they made an exception. Still, the food and atmosphere is excellent, as was the service once we sat down.
fast becoming a regular haunt with good wines, great food and manageable noise levels. Good choir 2 to 10 people.
Very, very noisy. We moved outside because we couldn’t hear ourselves at all. Food was just OK and quite expensive. All in all not a very good experience
We’ve been going for years, often 2-3 times per week. great food, great service. However the prices have gone out of control. Waaaayyy too expensive for a trattoria. Four of us the other night. 1 cocktail, 4 glasses of wine, 3 pastas, 2 scaloppine. No dessert. Total? $280.00. Too much. Down to once every two weeks
Great farm to table menu. Fish was delicious
The food is always great. Service outdoors, not so great. Little pricey but worth it. The Short Ribs and the Mediterranean Sea Bass is terrific. Usually we buy a bottle of wine but this time decided to bring a nice bottle that the restaurant doesn’t carry. We were surprised by the corkage fee of 25.00 a bottle.
Would we go back? Definitely.
Was excited to dine at PK but was greatly disappointed --
Waited extraordinarily long time for food and the waiter
never noticed. In fact he often disappeared.
Had to ask 3x for water.
Asked twice where our food was.
Caesar salad had little flavor and the lettuce was soggy.
4 people, $400 check that left us feeling taken advantage of.
Didn't seem like anyone cared ....and didn't appear anyone
was in charge of the restaurant.
Premium prices for an Olive Garden experience.
Wonderful food. Several mistakes with our order that were eventually rectified. Nice staff
This is my third time at Portola Kitchen for lunch with a friend. They have great service and a nice menu for lunch. Love that that they have outdoor seating option.
Awesome wholesome food!
Good food - but prices are somewhat high.
We enjoyed our experience there, but the service was a little too speedy/abrupt, eg. salad plate removed before we were quite finished without a question if we were finished. Main course brought before first course finished. Etc. BUT--food was delicious and ambiance perfect for a lunch.
Nice decor, food and staff. We hadn't been to Portola Kitchen for a few years and very glad we tried it again. The food was the right level of quality, quantity and flavor. Not over done, but not simplistic either. Will definitely be back soon!
Consistent service and great menu options
This is usually a very dependable place for us to get excellent food and friendly service. Nothing worked well tonight. Service was very slow and with zero personality even though it was not at all crowded. My salmon was over cooked and below par. Plus I indicated a special birthday for someone in our party but there was zero recognition of that. Just a dud. Wondering where management was on a Sunday night.
Excellent food here! I have been here a few times and sat outside but this time ate inside. The ambiance is quite lovely and cozy. Will certainly be back!
Very good food with some unique variations on traditional dishes. There pizza and calzone are excellent. I enjoyed their pear salad. They have a nice selection of wines by the glass or by the bottle, or you can bring a bottle of your own for a very reasonable corkage fee. There is bar seating with two television sets for sports viewing. There is also ample seating outdoors with overhead heaters as necessary.
Terrific options for healthy, filling and delicious entree salads. ! got the ahi salad - my friend got the salmon spinach salad. Both were great!
I loved everything about this place! Great food, fab service, I would recommend.
This is a hidden gem in a shopping center. The food is incredible. They make their own bread and pasta on site. Have been there three times now and it is always Devine.
The food and service is great! The desserts are delicious! Will come again and tell friends.
