About Portofino Restaurant
Portofino has been serving fine Italian cuisine for over two decades. One of the most important aspects of the restaurant is its dedication to getting top-quality ingredients from local sources whenever possible. The chefs go out to local markets daily to select the best possible items to go into their dishes that day. The quiet and cozy setting makes Portofino and ideal spot for a business dinner or a romantic evening out.
The Portofino menu is mostly full of traditional Italian menu items. These include veal marsala, chicken francese, beef carpaccio and calamari to name a few. There are also several sweet authentic desserts as well including a ricotta cheesecake, chocolate truffle mousse and the signature coppa stracciatella. Portofiino also keeps an extensive Italian wine selection so guests can select an appropriate drink to pair with their meal.

Portofino Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
We were a group of 10 at Portofino for a birthday celebration on a Saturday night. We all had a great time because we are an easy going group but... Service was awful. We were seated and not given menus, no drink order was taken, and no specials offered. Once we did order, the food came out one dish at a time. My fish was delivered and no one else got their meal for a full five minutes! Then the birthday girl did not get what she ordered. Most people did enjoy their food once they got it. They did offer us after dinner drinks and dessert to make up for all the snafus but it was all really disappointing. Portofino is not inexpensive so we expected much better service. Hope it was just an off night but there is really no excuse.
We made early Sunday reservations thinking they offered Brunch. Was a bit surprised that a restaurant open at 12:00 on Sunday doesn't offer Brunch. I should have checked the menu more closely. Only one other couple in the place and we were seated right next to them. It was so cold that we appreciated the body heat. Asked them to raise heat. Granted it was during a cold wave.
Ordered a Mimosa (still thinking Brunch) and had to tell the server the recipe. Bad sign By the way they charged $9.95 for each.
We ordered a mix of menu and special dishes. Very fresh seafood and delicious pastas. Italian Food is their strong point
Had dessert and lots of Home Made Sambuca (Free !!!)
All in all a decent experience
My experience at Portofino was remarkable. Been to City Island before but this made me feel like i was in a romantic dream!
From the waitstaff to the food, perfection all around. It truly brought a spark back into my relationship and the quuet ambiance helped us to really connect.
Wish we would have had an earlier reservation so we could have appreciated the sunset because the views are awesome. Next time. Food was very good. I had the surf & turf which was yummy. Potato croquette needs work though. Hubby had a chicken dish that he loved and our two friends both had the lobster fra diablo which they agreed was amazing. We shared NY cheesecake and Italian cheesecake which were very good and as an extra nice surprise the restaurant provided grappa or lemoncello. I didn't get our waiter's name but he was great...seemed to function as the maitre d too.
I had the surf and turf (lobster tail and steak) The lobster tail was delicious but the staek was too dry and lacked juices. I ordered mine with some red and my date ordered hers medium well. Both hers and mine were dry.
For the price it should have been perfect.
Everything else was great
I use to go in that place few years ago and I just went last Sunday was not good , they think wen you use a promotion like the one I get on my mail we don't have money ,, I ask for something and the guy say so rude , but don't come with the promotion I know it !!! The chicken Marsala I had was no good!!! The service was horrible ,,, I'm sorry it's such a beautiful place to be like that!!!
Everything was excellent. Went for my BF birthday. Place was not very packed when we arrived. Wait staff was friendly and very attentive. Food was hot and so good. The free after dinner cocktail was WOW! Would go again and again. If it was summer time the view and outdoor space would be excellent to look out at the ocean view.
My group of 4 arrived @7pm...only 3 other groups seated. The hot seafood antipasto was very good...but the "surf" in their "surf and turf" was no better that a DRY. flavorless top round steak! Waiter service was excellent, at least in part due to the lack of other customers. Their complimentary GRAPPA's were fantastic...choice of 4 of them with dessert.
If you are interested in a romantic night out Portofino is the place to go. The ambiance is delightful, the service is outstanding, and he wine list is vast. They even have live entertainment on Friday and Saturday. (Although during my last experience the entertainment was canceled.) They provide an option of indoor or outdoor dining. The outdoor cafe has been newly renovated and looks terrific. I have dined in Portofino many times and each time was a fabulous experience. I have received the same outstanding service whether I was in a party of 2 or a party of 10. The food is always delicious.
Our table had at least 4 different waiters/ bus boys helping us.
This made service slow, as it seemed like each waiter thought we were being helped by a different waiter. The Italian singer came on during the meal, and it definitely killed the mood and the charm of the restaurant. The food was good,
nothing special though. The atmosphere of sitting on the deck outside is 5 stars!
Arrived at 1:00 p.m. Porter was mopping entrance tile floor when we arrived. Was told a/c was being repaired and would be on within minutes--it never worked while we were there. It was 99 degrees outside that day. We were supplied with a tableside fan. Repairman arrived and dragged at 10' ladder to the tabe next to us (2 ft. away) and proceeded to replace fan light fixture while we were eating. I realize we were the only ones in the restaurant, but they were open for business.
I come here often on and off for 30 years. The food is still good across the board. But over time, the service has gone downhill and it still is. Lack of detail by waitress we had on last occasion - poor language skills and simply not attentive and somewhat rude. Also it wAs very warm as it appeared AC was not working well or set too low. I may still return for the food but my wife and I for first time are discussing alternatives.
Went there for lunch on Saturday - got the lunch menus - then were charged dinner prices. We were told that they only use the dinner menu for lunch on Saturday and Sunday but they'd fix our bill since they'd accidently given us the lunch menus. Nothing said this on the menus posted outside. They also charged a lot for basic bar drinks - prices weren't listed anywhere. Left a bad taste in our mouths.
I took my husband here the Saturday before Father's Day. The weather was great so we awaited a bit at the bar for outside dining which was very pleasant. My only suggestion is that when you go, and I do suggest that you go, you have time to spare. The service is friendly but busy.
We were disappointed by our experience at Portofino.
We sat outside in a lovely setting overlooking the harbor. Several people served us
In a disjointed way - resulting, in missing silverware (we had to ask several times and I overheard a server tell another - you get it for them), a wrong drink and a cooking apparatus not set up in time to serve one of the meals together
with the others. The hostesses were friendly, but the servers
weren't particularly. There was a very noisy group near our table, with frequent
outbursts. Others seemed disturbed by that too. Restaurant
management should deal with noisy groups.
I took my godmother here for lunch on her birthday. She was very pleased with my choice. We sat right by the window overlooking the water, with NYC as our backdrop. (There is outside dining available but the weather wasn’t cooperating that day.) I may visit again during Father's Day weekend to share this place with my husband.
Mother's day meal with special menu. Arrived early afternoon before the rush. Food and service was very good, 6 in our party and not a bad word on any of the wine, entrees and deserts. Not gourmet, definitely old school Italian food. It was too windy to sit outdoors, but you can see that it has a great outdoor section which allows a view of Manhattan from this location. Would go back.
I came in the day before Mother's Day with my party of 10, which included 4 children. The service was great, except that the food took a long while to come out. Appetizers were long gone and the entrees were nowhere to be seen. With that said, once the food came, we felt like it was well worth the wait. I had the lobster fra diavolo with crab legs, calamari, mussels... It was out of this world!
This is the second time I come here that I have an issue with one food or drink (nothing awful, just didn't like it) that they try to convince me to keep it. Its pretty annoying. Whenever I've gone to another restaurant and not liked something, they just take it away and offer me something else and thats it.
However, when the food in general is very good and the complementary home-made booze afterwards is really good!
