Portofino Ratings and Reviews
My girlfriend and I went to Portifino for our Valentines Day dinner. The ambiance was perfect. Our server Dean went out of his way to make our first Valentines Date together extremely memorable and personal. The service was outstanding although the food pricing was a bit high for the quality we received. Overall, I would certainly recommend this to a friend looking to celebrate a special occasion.
Would not recommend. Have tried Portofino twice now and had terrible experiences both times. The first time my partner and I felt like we were rushed from beginning to end. Our last reservation was at 8:15 and we had serious concerns that we would be rushed again seeing as the kitchen closed at 10.
First, we had to wait 15 minutes to be seated in an outside area. Then we were seated in a room downstairs that is clearly what they use for private parties. We were the first ones in there until 3 other couples joined us. My first two options for a meal weren’t available, and my partner and I went 15 minutes 3 separate times waiting for our waitress to fill our empty wine glasses!! A pretty simple task...
The biggest issue was that it took 1 hour and 30 minutes for our main meal to reach us. I would be more forgiving if it was 6:30/7, and peak dining time. However, it was nearing 10pm. I went upstairs from our dungeon to find someone to complain to and couldn’t find anyone!! Not a server, manager, hostess, no one. Also, my partner ordered rare steak and I had ravioli, things which should NOT take 1 hr and 30 mins to get to the table after 8:40pm. When our meal finally came, we told the waitress we wanted our check as by now we realized it would take her 15-20 minutes to complete any regular task.
The best part was that all 3 couples who arrived up to 20 minutes after us, were served food before us. They had different servers, and that seemed to be why. Our waitress seemed to just not be with it, or it was her first day waitressing ever. She never apologized for her awful service, or picked up on the fact that maybe we might be ticked off that this was the third time we had to wait for her for 15 minutes to refill our glasses. Occasionally she would come down into this room and we would try to get her attention, only for her to evade eye contact and rush out the room.
Terrible experience on so many fronts. Don’t waste your money here. The food isn’t even worth it
The evening was perfect. I think we got the best table in the house. The waitress was excellent! The food was outstanding. My husband and I both ordered fish and both were cooked to perfection. The ambiance was also perfect. It turned out to be the perfect place to celebrate a birthday.
Made reservation thru open table, wasn't really needed and was seated early. When making the reservations noted it was for an anniversary dinner. No mention of it from the restaurant and nobody seemed to care. Just another customer paying for over priced food. This is the kind of place people go to eat to feel like they are special within society, like a first class passenger on an airplane when in reality you're not royalty.
Made a reservation for a birthday dinner. Was given a booth near entrance. Once seated, the hostess dropped a glass from our table. Oops. Server came, but didn't seem to pay attention to what we ordered. Appetizer never came and when asked, response was simply, "Well, I guess it never made it to my ears." Food was very greasy and presentation was not impressive. For the price charged, expectation was higher in terms of quality.
It was a perfect place to spend New Years Eve. They had party hats and a festive atmosphere. The appetizers were great and most of the meals were great. I had the fish special and it was dry, but the accompaniments were good. Great wine and service. Overall and excellent evening
It was not busy, but it took way too long to even get a glass of water, let alone our bottle of wine. The waitress had no explantation, and was very inattentive. Then another long wait before our salads arrived, and then almost immediately, our entrees were served. My filet was done to order, but it was tough and stringy. There were very few, if any, Italian specialties like we saw on (an apparently outdated) menu online - too bad. It has taken me years of living in Lexington to finally try Portofiino, but I won't be back. Our waitress was pleasant enough but showed little concern for us, as did the rest of the personnel there- our greeting was curt, and no one thanked us as we left. Too bad.
My husband and I had veal marsala meatballs. This used to be my favorite meal at Portofina's. The entrée was what I will describe as "tired." It tasted like it had been previously cooked, and was warmed up for us. It was not up to my expectations.
We had not been to Portofino's for a couple of years. A friend of a friend just moved to Lexington, and wanted to have lunch. I recommended Portofino's. She had soup and quiche. She did not finish the soup, and she was not impressed with the quiche.
We typically have liked Portofino's but this was one of the worst experiences we have had. Service was very slow and poor. The waitress did not know what Spaghetti was and even after the second try did not bring spaghetti out to our kids. Imagine an Italian restaurant that has no clue what spaghetti is. The kids are young and they waited very patiently. It took us over 30 minutes to get our appetizer and over an hour after that to get our meals - again which were wrong for the kids.
Next time we are going to Guiseppe's
We had the scallops and filet with tiramisu for dessert. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was perfect for us to sit and chat. Our server was attentive, but not intrusive. In all i would rate our experience as a 10 out of 10 . Thank you to Portofino. I would highly recommend Portofino if you are in Lexington.
I am the guy that OpenTable hates. I rarely write reviews particularly for highly rated establishments because I typically can't add anything new and the last thing I need to read is another ditto to already posted reviews. However, when I encounter an experience like ours at Portofino on Saturday night I feel I should add something to try and prevent others from the same outcome. We were seated directly upon our arrival and after a few minutes our server arrived to take our drink order. I selected a bottle of wine and then....we waited. I could see the bottle sitting at the bar and in her defense she was busy serving food and taking orders at other tables. I finally went to the bar to get the bottle (15 minutes since we ordered it) and what appeared to be the manager was a little snippy the bartender graciously agreed to open and let us taste. When the server arrived several minutes later we apologized for being impatient and simply said we wanted to toast our anniversary. She smiled and then walked us through their featured entries for the evening. We both ordered based on her input and recommendations. The soup was supposed to be Tuscan bean...it lacked flavor and was more of a vegetable soup with a few beans but nothing that suggested anything as described. Our entries were also a disappointment. It seems as though they were going for complexity rather than actual flavors. Strange combinations of ingredients in both dishes. Neither of us finished our entries and were significantly disappointed. I'll end this with my feeling is sometime the food is so overwhelming that it covers for difficulties in the service. Sometimes one of us simply orders the wrong dish and but the other is pleased with their choice so it was a selection issue. This was none of the above. I write this because Portofino was rated highly and we were visiting Lexington to enjoy a nice dinner. Based on our experience...be careful here.
