Portobello Ristorante Ratings and Reviews
We ate family style and started with the Prosciutto & Melone fresh and clean & Calamari & it was very Italian, broiled and served in a lovely marinara. The Vongole was one of the best outside of Italy. We finished with Ossobuco & Cioppino di Mare and were please with both dishes all washed down with a bottle of Colle Secco :o)
I had high hopes for this restaurant it was seriously mediocre including the service food which is really nothing too exciting or special. In comparison to other restaurant of same price range - this restaurant completely pales to compare. Nice owners but just not up to par - which is too bad
We dine here probably on an average of once a month and have done so for several years now. This cozy Italian restaurant is owned and run by a husband and wife team Rosa and Pino. Although in reality you are in an intimate dining setting, you feel as if you have been transported to Italy given the home-cooked meals. The food is creatively seasoned, beautifully presented and portions are always generous. Rosa makes the desserts herself which make them very challenging to resist! Service is excellent with constant vigilance yet at the same time quietly unobtrusive. I always receive a warm welcome and feel like I have come into Pino and Rosa's home if only for a couple of hours!
Neighborhood gem! Even though we can walk to this place, we’d likely drive, if we moved away ... worth the trip!
Gamberi Diavolo is divine, the pastas are amazing (made fresh) and we’ve now tried two meat entrees - osso bucco, chicken with artichokes—delish - the wine list is very good too, if a bit limited but they have a good house wine, too.
Portobello is a hidden (and under-rated) intimate dining room with excellent Italian food, and a few signature dishes worth trying, again and again!
I’ve been here a few times over the years for dinner and the food is consistently excellent. This time I tried the seasonal mushroom cauliflower (vegetarian) soup, which was flavourful and rich. Another appetizer, the stuffed Portobello mushroom cap is always fresh and gently spiced.
The fresh halibut and prawn risotto is a signature dish; it is rich and very tasty. All the menu items look appealing. The wine selection is sufficient and you can find a good bottle to complement your meal for a reasonable price. I finished my meal with a fragrant and moist lemon cake, a daily special.
The overall price point for entrees is less than other comparable restaurants in the downtown core, Portobello represents good value overall. And the food quality is a step above other Italian restaurants in the city.
The service is casual and attentive. The owners seem to care about their customers; if you dine a special occasion, they may make it memorable.
For visitors to Vancouver, it is worth the taxi fare to travel to South Granville-Broadway district, which has some excellent restaurants and unique retail shops.
Fantastic Italian food; really a notch above most run-of-the-mill Italian joints.
I went with my family while I was in town, and we all had an exceptional experience.
We shared the Fungo Portobello Gratinato appetizer, and it was so delicious. The garlic croutons and parmigiano (so umami) perfectly balance with the flavor of the mushroom. This is a great appetizer because its just packed with so much flavour.
I don't think you can go wrong with any of their entrees, but they do seafood REALLY well. A few of us has the Spaghetti con Gamberi Rombo which was fantastic, one Linguine Con Cozze Fresche (also great), and Polpette Di Manzo (great if you're more of a meat person and dont feel like pasta or seafood). All the food paired really well with our Pinot Grigio.
The desert really blew us away. I ordered this lemon cream dessert (the last one available) and words cant even describe how good it was. One of the greatest regrets in my life is eating it so quickly.
In terms of service, our waiter was really great, but he was covering a lot of tables (I think every table in the place.. its small), but I can appreciate how hard we was working.
This restaurant is an absolute neighborhood gem, very authentic, and perfect for pretty much any occasion.
Excellent food. Reasonably priced. Impeccable service by an unpretentious waiter.
The space is a little too crowded causing chairs to be bumped by neighbouring diners.
A very good dining experience as far as the food and service is concerned. I highly recommend it.
Portobello is our favourite neighbourhood restaurant where my husband and I have been going for many years. The owners are always there, and they remember us, visit our table, are not intrusive, are able to keep very good waiters over time. They also make the best ever Vitello al Limone ! Our fear is that one day we will pass the restaurant and see a sign on the door saying either "closed forever" or "for lease". This section of West Broadway is vulnerable to either building owners raising the rent for small businesses who then have to close down, or an outright purchase of the whole block with a "Development Application" sign put up in place of the small business signs. Then there is another look-alike mid-or high rise building put up that has rents too high for small restaurants like Portobello. And another big chain would move in, either selling financial services, or fitness or bad food. This would be TRAGIC!
Always good, tasty, reliable Italian style food with a local touch. It is a friendly, family-run restaurant with excellent service. It's hard to find this kind of independent, reasonably priced, good quality restaurant these days on the west side. Very convenient for transit and taxis at Broadway and Granville.
Great service! We were running late because of traffic jam and we phoned ahead for appitizers which were waiting when we arrived☺ thet took very good care of us so we could still have a delicious dinner before the theatre. Fantastic fresh pasta, great ambience and very nice staff. Would definately recommend.
The waiters and Head receptionist made sure we were happy with our meals and accomodated providing my 95 year old mother with a festive birthday cake dessert, complete with lit candle and dramatic presentation. They turned a delicious meal into a celebratory event, well worth the value of the meals and drinks.
Went prior to Arts Club performance. Wait staff very helpful. We both really enjoyed our pasta dishes which left no room for dessert! Restaurant was packed but we were seated immediately - make a reservation. Will definitely go again and sample other items.
