The food was amazing. My only issue was staff needs to learn difference between vegetarian and vegan. Very disappointed second night ate there. Was so excited to try the other portobello mushroom on menu. Arrived with cheese when cheese wasn’t listed in the ingredients. Then side fries came with Parmesan cheese all over them. Then found could Vegan the mushroom item. My avocado was good but very disappointed with what happened.
Food was excellent, newly renovated and looked amazing.
took a quick anniversary break to riverside, loved the food, the rooms, massages, and the hot springs soak, definitely will come back
Drove up from salt lake only took 2 hours or so, walked around the beautiful little town of lava springs. Looked on Google for spots to eat and this sparked our interest. Quaint little bar/restaurant our waitress was great very informed on the area and wine pairings. They had just switched to their spring menu very good. I had the pork chop and my wife had the Portobello sandwich both were amazing. Also had the clams for an appetizer also very good deffently a pricier choice but will worth it.
We have been to the Porneuf Grille in previous visits to Lava. We were pleasantly surprise when we went this past weekend. The entire place was redone and is very classy, open and has nice river views. It really ads to the already good food that Alonzo creates. Speaking of which, Alonzo was very accommodating to our plant based diet. We went back the second night because we had such a nice dinner the night before.
If this is the finest dining in Lava, I totally get the ratings relatively. If
Our experience at the grill was mixed. We had dinner two different nights. Friday and Saturday.
Friday our hostess / server was or seemed very curt . Food was served hot. Our steak was to be cooked med well but came med rare. We did not send it back other than that is was just an average dinner out.
Saturday we had a different server and she was great. First off she ask if the live music
(an electric piano) was too loud. Yes it was so much so- we could not talk with out raising our voice.
She ask the performer to tone it down which he did not . We again ask her to have it toned down and again he did not do so.
Along with this the server we had had the night before propped open a door just behind our table which
allowed 40* air to blow in on us. So after a bit I got up and closed the door. Well not 5 min. later she
came back and did it again.
About 10 min later we ask our new server it it could be closed " oh is it too cold ? Yes very much so "
So she closed the door .
Dinner came and again it was nice but for me just ok.
While eating the piano player finally stopped and opened the door to remove his equipment. He made at least 4 trips to ? his car each 3-4 min leaving the door and cold air blown in on us.
Once he was finally gone and the door was secure - closed all was much more enjoyable .
Our server was great food was fine but I did not think in line with the price .
Would I recommend to a friend yes but also would explain our experience.
Amazing!! The food was fantastic and we loved the atmosphere.
This place has just undergone a major renovation. The bar has been expanded as has the dining area. This is the 'nicest' place in Lava Hot Springs to eat although we like the Royal also for more mainstream food and drinks. The only thing about the Portneuf I thought was odd is that all of the draft beer was crossed off the menu, they had taps, but no beer flowing. The bottled beer choices were slim, had 10 times the selection at the local grocery store. I ended up sharing a bottle of wine with the wife instead. We love their food and always support them when we visit Lava a few times a year. The bathroom facility is a weird little old bathroom that should have been updated with the remodel.
The food was amazing and quite a surprise. The location is a bit old and funky, but, they more than made up for it with great service and food. We highly recommend this place.
So much delicious! And the waiter/chef was a complete bro. He kept us from having this family of kids around us, which I'm not sure if he meant to do, but I was so appreciative of.
Quality ingredients, clever combinations, gorgeous presentation in a wonderful environment...easy to see why folks travel all the way from Soda Springs and beyond to eat here.
Best food in Lava Hot Springs. Great experience. Great appetizers, entrees and desert.
Amazing food and service. A little too dark to see at some tables. We look forward to seeing the complete renovation.
This place was better in years past. The food was less than mediocre. The ambiance was mediocre. The server was not quite mediocre.
They need to hire enough staff to allow people to order and enjoy a cocktail before being asked to order dinner. The minute you sit down they want to know what you want to eat. Need to allow people to relax. Bartendar was also waiting tables on Christmas Eve so was very rushy meal.
I am a repeat customer. Always an interesting menu and delicious food. It is a treat to eat a fine meal after a day relaxing in the natural mineral hot springs. Thank you for this great restaurant!
And thank you Cathy for sharing you love of fine foods, and mineral water! We love our customers!! Hope to see you again soon. - Chef Alonzo
They do not accommodate people with food intolerances or allergies.
Dear JulietW, I am so sorry you felt we wouldn't accommodate your food intolerances. I have sent you a private message with my contact information. I would love to know more about your experience with us so I can better understand what happened. - Chef Alonzo
What a find! A little cozy dining spot with great ambiance, a friendly staff and best of all...the most delicious, fresh, seasonal and creative menu! We had a few drinks in the bar first and then sat down to cioppino (a garlic tomato broth with fresh shellfish and whitefish) ...an Italian delicacy!...and then the fresh catch which was prepared perfectly with fresh herbs. I had the poblano Caesar salad on the side and if I thought I could get away with it, I would have licked the plate clean lol. The soup was also so full of flavor, my husband and I definitely wanted more, even though the proportions were ample. The night was capped off with flourless date chocolate cake served on a Hinayana salt block (paired with some port, which was perfect). The stuff is not only skilled about knowledgeable about their menu. All in all it was a first class dining experience in little downtown Lava Hot Springs Idaho. We will be back soon!!!
We always love coming to this restaurant. It was Thanksgiving and we enjoyed the good comfort food. We will return for sure.
Thanksgiving meal was very nice, plenty of food & great staff, bar was wonderful, again very great staff & bartender was very good. Really enjoyed our meal!
I took my boyfriend here for dinner last weekend. The food was amazing. The Chef was informative and very friendly. He came out to check on us multiple times and to get feedback on his dishes.
Overall this was an awesome birthday dinner. We will definitely be back in the future!
Thanks for the great review! We love taking care of our guests, especially when it's a special evening for you. Happy Birthday!! Hope to see you again soon. -Chef Alonzo
I ordered the chicken which was good but my husband ordered the catch of the day which was a Hawaiian fish. It was overcooked and dry. The drinks were good and the desserts were also good.
Hi MicheleS, Thanks for the feedback. I too like the chicken dish, and our desserts are something we are proud about. I am sorry you didn't like the Ono dish we sent out. That particular cut is a tricky one to prepare. We have run that dish a second (and a third time) since you dined with us, and I think we have worked out the kinks. Thanks again for the great review. Hope to see you again soon. - Chef Alonzo
Our reservation was at 6:15 PM they called us and said they needed to change it to 7:00 PM. At 7:30 we were sitting in the bar and still had not been seated. So my husband ordered a mixed drink and the bartender literally tasted the orange juice before making his drink. That was the straw that broke the camels Back and we left and went to 78th St. and it was fabulous food.
Best food in town and beyond! The chef is amazing!
We had a fabulous dinner here. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary and the woman who was running the place took time to cut fresh flowers and put them in an arrangement on our table to make it special. The food was fantastic. I had the filet, which was cooked perfectly, and my husband had the salmon. We also split an amazing blueberry salad and the lavender creme brûlée for dessert. Everything was perfect. It was a nice, quiet, romantic atmosphere. It’s a bit pricey, but the quality of the food and service makes it worth it. We couldn’t have had a better experience.
The four of us were travelling for 10 days throughout the Northwest and this was the best dinner we had. Very friendly and wonderful food.
Fantastic food, great service. It was a nice, quiet place. The menu was full of lots of good options.
Great service. Our server: honest, straightforward, and very welcoming. Big positive for us. This spot wants to beat the competition with creative cuisine. We found the menu thoughtful and well prepared, especially for the locale. Dining room is quaint—needs updating with better lighting and outdoor dining option. Advertised artisanal cocktails weren’t available due to lack of ingredients listed on menu—but server was creative enough to find a tasty work around. Charming!
Fantastic food & live entertainment. Pleasant atmosphere!
The waitress that we had would ask questions and then stare at us with an annoyed look on her face. It was very bizarre!
The food was to die for! Don't be turned off by the look of the restaurant (it's a little dated) because the quality and taste of the food more than makes up for it.
The food was mediocre at best. We ordered two cocktails that are not complicated - a cosmo and a dry martini. Not sure how the cosmo was made. She did say she didn't have lime. It tasted like watered-down cranberry juice and it was served in a tall glass with ice and a straw. The martini was made with triple sec - that one got sent back. The server was so nice, it was difficult to be critical, but looking back I regret not being more assertive because it was an expensive stop on our vacation and not enjoyable at all.
Appetizer s ( salad and scallops) we're Amazing! Some confusion about hostess telling waitress we were there. Then hostess didn't relay drink orders so they were not delivered until asked again. People were very nice but furniture and ambiance was not that of a reservation only in my opinion. We chose not to eat dinner because of the sense that they had something else they would rather be doing.
We love the Portneuf. Amazing food that’s higher priced but well worth it!
Food was yummy and the staff was great. I'd made a reservation for outdoors, but it turned out that wasn't an option.
Fine dining in a casual atmosphere
Excellent, extensive wine & cocktail list
The chefs & servers - absolutely top notch
A little pricey for a small town, but I would definitely recommend this restaurant!
A diamond in the rough 💍
What a lovely place to have our anniversary dinner! The staff was friendly, knowledge, and provided excellent service.
We sat in the lounge and had a great view of the river and trees. The food was perfectly cooked (salmon and prime rib), and the desserts were expertly prepared (cheese cake and creme brulee).
Great food. Loved the dessert on top of a salt block. Server was very nice. Surprised that a small town had such a nice restaurant.
Wonderful chef, warm getting, fast accurate service, delightful well- crafted selections, very creative unique and delicious. Would love to return
