Portland Prime - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
Our server in the bar before dinner was not friendly or very accommodating to say the least. Our server at dinner was very good and attentive. However out of the 11 entrees we ordered 5 were way below par for a $$$$ restaurant . Most all of the meat dishes were over- cooked. I personally would probably not recommend this restaurant to friends.
I have been here more times than I can count. The food and service and ambiance keep bringing me back. This is the first time I have not seen a familiar server which was sad. My server on this particular evening was not the usual professional I am accustomed to. Won't stop me from returning and giving them another chance. The menu is more than worth the chance!
We met another couple at Portland Prime for a double-date & night out at Portland Prime recently. We always enjoy the great atmosphere, the wonderfully attentive service, the live music and the overall "good vibe" of Portland Prime. Owner Frank Taylor is a good friend and he's never too busy to greet us and catch up, whenever we visit the restaurant. And the FOOD is always OUTSTANDING! Having so many great choices on the menu ensures there's something for everyone. Preparation and presentation are first class. We love Portland Prime! (THANKS FRANK!)
Thanksgiving dinner, and though the restaurant was not full, our party of 6 was seated next to the kitchen. Very noisy. Food was ok. Ample portion for the $39 traditional turkey dinner, but the prime rib looked scrawny, and the steak knives were not sharp enough to slice through some of the gristle. Spuds were oversalted. Service was efficient, as it always is in the dining room (not so much the bar) and not rushed. There's a reason they don't rush you...
They charged $14.25 for a Manhattan cocktail at the bar. No drinkable bottled wines under $40. This place is ok, but I repeatedly walk out feeling I've been gouged. We like to drink, but simply can't afford it here. And it's just not polished enough to justify those El Gaucho-like prices. Last time.
My husband and myself decided to give this place a try for our 24th wedding anniversary. Based on the previous reviews (for the bar) we had high expectations. That was quickly deflated. We each ordered a salad. Him the house salad and myself the Caesar. The salads were large in size, but the dressing on each could have come from a bottle. It did not have the house made flavor that is eluded to in the description.
Our main dish was the well marbled porterhouse. That is a nice way of saying excessively fatty steak. The steak was thin, unseasoned, and well done ( I ordered medium). I feel if you are paying $45.00 for a dinner you should never be in a situation where you have to send it back. They should know the difference between Medium and well done. They did offer to refire, but we had to wait another 20 minutes. We also had to hear about the new crew in the back and how no one likes them. NOT MY PROBLEM!
After all of that we decided to not chance dessert and walked across the street for a doughnut. Who knew a doughnut would be the highlight of the evening.
We paid $116.00 for dinner that quite frankly was the quality of a chain steak house. I guess for my 25th I am headed to Outback.
Great foods, Welcome Greeting at first when we walked into Prime...
Over all was great! The only tiny thing was that we had to ask for our "complementary" bread, after couple of our orders have already arrived at the tanle. Other than that it was always pleasure to dine with Portland Prime. :-)
Our waiter, Giacomo was truly outstanding. A professional waiter who understood food preparation and ensured that you, the patron did also. I have not had such service since dining in the best restaurants in NYC.
The food was wonderful.
This was our first visit, but certainly will not be our last.
Reservations were so easy on Open Table.
We were seated and served with very comfortable conversation server. Specials were explained & beverage orders placed. First beverages then salads. My wife & I shared the Prime Salad as it is a larger salad - the portions were just right & very fresh. Entrees served & my steak was exactly as ordered and fork tender. We would recommend for small parties that are not too price sensitive as prices are higher to match the white linen service.
Portland Prime was probably good in its hay day. The neighborhood has gone downhill a bit; although, you can see that Portland Prime attempts to keep the area immediately around them looking like a diamond in the rough. Food was old school steak house, and felt as though the same waitstaff and cooks were there from 20yrs ago, and showing badly.
My server was nice, and I felt for him. Food was extremely over-cooked, and poor presentation. Best thing about the dinner experience was the onion rings appetizer. Steaks were off-temp, and vegetables were long dead. It would be neat to see that type of place revitalized; since, I'm sure there is a lot of history there. I was going to hit El Gaucho; but, wanted to experience a Portland steakhouse, unfortunately I should have stuck with a known. =(
The server was very friendly, and patient as my guests were new to Portland Prime. He took time to explain the various cuts of steak, made pairing suggestions for wines, and taught my guests what various cooking terms meant for the Steak house. Overall an extremely pleasant experience which we will be repeating again.
Bravo Zulu Portland Prime!!!
This was our first visit to Portland Prime. Bradford was our server. I love a good steak and we had a GREAT steak. Both my wife and I ordered the 8 oz filet which were cooked exactly to order and were absolutely delicious. We started the meals with salads; the iceberg wedge with blue cheese and bacon for me and the prime salad for Sharon. The salads were crisp, fresh, and flavorful. The bread was warm and tasty. Bradford’s service was spot on; not over the top, just there when needed. He also has a wonderful sense of humor. So if you are looking for that consummate steak place. Portland Prime is the place!!!!
We used to love this restaurant and told everyone about it until now! Very disappointed with the menu change - ie: deletion of our favorites - green tomato tower - steak diane - and other items. Steak was asked for medium but well done - I didn't complain because it is was it is. Will come back just for the wedge salad.
Honestly everything was good. Service and food. Drinks are a little expensive. My fiance got her drink and there was a fruit fly dead inside. I removed it. On her second drink it was clean but the server shook my drink, poured it into my cup. When I went for a drink I saw a fruit fly in it. I was a little irritated but didn't want to cause a scene since it was her bday.
We were the only black people there in an almost empty restaurant, they put us at a table by the kitchen where we heard clanging and doors opening closing during our dinner. Every white couple that came in were seated by the front where it was much quieter and by a window do you could see the outside. Where we were seated all we could see is the kitchen staff run in and out of the kitchen with the orders. We could see everyone's order before it was delivered.
I know this restaurant usually seats people in the nicest places first and the less desirable places as they are filling up. So when you think about the subtleness of this racism I would say it's not cool. We paid our Jill and gave the waiter a nice tip as he wasn't the problem.
We will not eat there again!!!!!
From the moment we walked in the door we were treated like royalty. Even the manager paused to help us with a few pictures to remember our date. The live music was amazing! The food was gourmet and delicious! Didn't much care for the wine but admittedly I'm a bit of a wine snob. Usually our favorite place is PCG but we found the music and entrees were much better here. My husband and I will be back.
Excellent menu with lots to choose from. Bar had live jazz music and better ambiance than the restaurant side so we sat there. Attentive staff and management weathered a couple miscues, at one point all the lights went out, but also failed to clean ice the bartender spilled on the floor by our table. Overall, a quality establishment made for a good starting place on a first date.
Lobster bisque soup was terrific, really good and hot.
Ahi tower fantastic , fish very fresh
Trio of appetizer was good, very nicely presented in a three tiered stand.
My companion had the special - blackened rib eye and I had the seafood pasta . Portions were large and food tasted great . Megan our server was wonderful
Our turtle brownie with ice cream , and house made apple turnover with walnuts and ice cream were large portions and so delicious!!!!
We will be back again soon when visiting Portland!!!!
