Loved the view and the cozy fire. We had dinner and breakfast. The environment is quite amazing. The large windows made us feel like we were in a snow globe as we watched the beautiful snow fall.
The food was good but not fantastic. I would come back for dinner but for the price, probably not breakfast.
The property at Suncadia is really amazing and the people were friendly and helpful. We might try an early Fall visit next time to capture a different season.
I've been to Portals many times and really enjoy it. Unfortunately, the frittata this time had so much pepper I would believe an explanation that includes the lid falling off the pepper. The frittata and a side of toast served two of us really nicely. Service was lovely and the food is normally quite good.
My husband and I had breakfast at Portals. I ordered the Eggs Benedict and my husband ordered a ham and cheese omelet. The food was delicious and the portion size was perfect - not too little and not too much. The carafe of hot coffee on your table is a nice bonus!
We gave this an overall 2 stars, if half-stars were allowed we'd have given it 2.5. Three things stuck out.
1. Wobbly table. When we were seated we noticed the table had one short leg. Not a big deal, we asked the hostess if they had a wedge or something to fix it. She said she'd take care of it right away. Later when our server arrived we asked about fixing the table, he said he'd take care of it. When he brought our wine we asked again he apologized for forgetting and took care of it right away. I don't recall going to a "fancy" restaurant and having a wobbly table. I'm thinking the people who set the table make sure the table is ready for guests. If we had spent under $130 on our meal I'd think nothing of it. We spent well over $130 for two of us.
2. My wife ordered the salmon. It was very salty. Otherwise it was good. She didn't want to wait to send it back as we were both very hungry. In hindsight, we should have sent it back.
3. I ordered the Elk shepards pie which tasted great. Unfortunately it was just barely warm enough. Again, hunger and schedule made me decide to keep it and not send it back.
We had the Brussels sprout appetizer which was delicious.
We don't dine out at restaurants where our total bill is over $130 for two people very often, but when we do, we try to find places that we believe are worth it. If our total bill was under $100 then I'd feel like this was a good value but in my mind the price doesn't match the experience.
We sat for close to 15 minutes without even being acknowledged. When the waiter finally came we ordered our meals and asked for coffee expecting even if we had to wait for food we would have some coffee while we sat. After waiting another 10 minutes we had to flag down our waiter and ask if we could at least have coffee. After another severl minutes, it came. The food is not particularly creative and is expensive but was adequately repaired. This occasion was brunch. We had been previously for dinner. Service was better but an uninspired menu.
Unfortunately I was disappointed with Portals. Since we were attending a destination wedding and lodging at Suncadia, we didn't have lots of eating choices. So, our family of 6-8 ate at Portals quite a bit. The lunch was quite good. However, I got sick after eating a few bites of the Seared Ling Cod over quinoa. At breakfast, the Eggs Benedict wasn't a hit either. The eggs tasted like they were dipped in vinegar. Both my son and I who ordered that dish tasted it. Meanwhile, we had great service and the views were spectacular with the forest fire on the ridge far away. The smoke in the hallways bothered us but that couldn't be helped. I think the food is very mediocre and doesn't match its high price.
My parents, celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary, were ecstatic when we surprised them with the hour-long trip to Suncadia! Portals more than met my expectations, which were high, based on menu and location. The lodge is gorgeous, surrounded by forest. The food and service were of the highest quality I've experienced. The celebration was a huge success!
We were staying at suncadia and ate at the restaurant one night for dinner and appetizers another night. I had the salmon and a salad. My husband had a clam chowder soup and a salad. The service was fine. The waiter was young and helpful with menu choices. My husband's clam chowder was not homemade. Thick and tasted canned. Salads were good. Salmon was fine. There were limited menu choices. Very family oriented, but this was a family resort. Lunch selections were also very limited. Average experience and expensive prices.
Suncadia pretty consistently dreams about being 5 star but hits somewhere south of 4. This visit to Portals was no exception. We were seated late (8:45) so it was pretty quiet but it still took 15 minutes for our server to check in. Granted, we had somebody else stop by a bit earlier to tell us who our server would be and to ask whether we wanted to order any drinks but 15 minutes was still unacceptable. After he arrived and I expressed my dissatisfaction, he was appropriately attentive. But the damage was done as it related to our expectations about the experience. As for the food, it was hit and miss. The crab cake appetizer was tasty as were the desserts. But the two beef dishes (one a New York Strip, another the Pot Roast) lacked flavor.
I was looking for some place special to take my two girls for dinner with a local menu.
The Angus pot roast was exceptional, salmon baked to perfection, along with the side dishes that accompanied the meals.
The service is superb!
Was a pleasant experience and would highly recommend making reservations for this location.
Food was mediocre, they ran out of dishes. What's funny is we had dinner there two days prior and they were out of the meat pie...they were also out of it 2 days later, what?!
Our server was great and reassured us that the Halibut was not going to be dry...it was :(

The chicken sandwich is a grilled chicken breast which is than battered and fried, what!!! Drier than you'd expect, a major bummer. Poor planning on whomever is running this place. I guess they do have a steady stream of clientele, who have slim pickings when it comes to staying at Suncadia. Only one restaurant, 3 if you count the golf course and Swift.
You are better off cooking for yourself, even if it's Mac & cheese out of the box! But in all fairness crab cakes were good, so 2 stars instead of one!
I was disappointed. The food menu was limited and mediocre. The preparation of my dish, mac and cheese with crab and truffled bread crumbs, was merely adequate. I could not taste the truffle at all and the crab seemed limited to two sections of King Crab leg, with small claw, each about an inch long. The crab cakes were not good at all, too much bread not enough crab, makes one wonder if they ran out. Great view, I would go again for a drink, but not dinner.
