Portalli's is a fancy Italian restaurant in Elliott City, Maryland. This is an elegant and attractive spot that's great for a romantic date or an impressive lunch or dinner event. The food and service were excellent. We could not complain about those things. The only real issue was that we were in the upstairs back room and it was LOUD. Almost the whole time. Many tables were filled, including a long table of about 14 people. There was also a piano player who was singing for most of the time. If the room had half as many people or at least something to dampen the noise, it would be been perfect. But it is wide open, with high vaulted ceilings and hard walls - makes to deafening noise. Again, otherwise, the food and service were great. Thanks.
Food was great. It was a bit warm in the restaurant and chairs were very soft and uncomfortable (brown chairs against wall) - hard for the guests we invited to dinner to get out of. Service was good and bread was excellent. Good call getting the bread from Bon Fresco.
Loved Portallis where we went for a late Sunday night dinner to celebrate a birthday. Food and service was top notch. We had a nice table by the window overlooking the historic street in Ellicott City. Only issue was when we were leaving (you have to walk through the bar) , I noticed that the floor in the bar was covered with liquid. The host commented that it was from the trash bags that they were taking outside. Disgusting.
Its a small cozy restaurant with generally very good food, though my eggplant appetizer (Eggplant Mezzaluna) tasted like the deep fry oil was not very fresh on this last visit. Still the entree, a green pea risotto, was quite delicious and my two business partners both enjoyed their dishes (a salad and Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes).
We will definitely plan another visit.
My family of four wanted to take me to dinner for Father's Day at the restaurant of my choice but, of course, they had several suggestions. I was not in the mood for the restaurants that we regularly visit so, based on one previous visit, I selected Portalli's. We were visiting on a Sunday evening, which is not one of the busier dining days of the week, so I did not know what to expect for the food and service.
Service: The server was very attentive and responsive. Drinks were replenished as needed, dishes were supplied or cleared as needed, etc.
Food: The food was well-prepared and presented. The blackened chicken florentine was cooked perfectly. The meals prepared for the family included braised ribs, seafood carbonara and scallops that were all well prepared.
The entree prices at Portalli's are slightly above average (in the range of $20 to $22) for the area but the quality of the food was worth the additional cost. In summary, we had a wonderful meal.
Had a bit of an issue at first with the hostess, but the manager quickly resolved it. The duck leg confit with goat cheese risotto was delicious, probably the best duck I've ever had. Good wine selection and our waiter was friendly and patient. Overall, good experience and will be back soon.
Had a wonderful dinner on the outside deck on a beautiful Friday night. My husband had the shrimp gnocchi and he said it was incredible. I had filet mignon and they substituted asparagus for friend eggplant. It was delicious. The calamari as an appetizer were also delicious. Our wait staff couldn't have been nicer!
Four of us ate on the new deck out back, which was very pleasant. Two of us had the Caesar salad, which was a bit tired. The crab chowder was well-prepared. Two of us had rockfish, which was nicely done although the accompanying fingerling potatoes were too salty. The chocolate cake was good. The menu is large and varied but possibly too large to do everything well.
Went out for a date night with my wife and chose Portallis on a recommendation of coworker. Got a little surprise when they offered rooftop seating and it was beautiful! The food was amazing and the service was great! All made for a great evening. The only thing that bothered me was that i felt bad for our server, he was the only one on the rooftop and was constantly running up and down. But he was a champ and did it with a smile! We will return for sure!
We went to Portalli's on a Tuesday night in June for our anniversary. We sat on the 3rd floor deck. There were only a 3 other couples there that we were aware of. When we left we saw a few more in the first floor dining area. I don't normally go out on Tuesday night to know if the restaurant is normally this empty, but if so it is a great time to go if you don't like to wait or fight the crowds.
The service was very good and the food was as well. One thing I like about it is that the menu is not just the standard Italian fare of white or red sauce over pastas and meats. There are a lot of different and interesting dishes. I had the Green Pea Risotto and it was delicious.
We went June 6, 2016 for my daughters birthday, not only were we given privacy, the waiter was excellent!.
We knew the food was incredible but this night was even better because of the special attention we received, Portelli's is the true gem of Ellicott City!!
Our server was very rude. When seated we mentioned that some of our friends are vegetarian of which she rudely said "didn't you look at the menu before coming here". Everytime we would ask a question or make a request she would make faces. She never smiled during the whole time we were there. The service was slow.
If we wanted to get a custom made pasta her excuse was that all the sauces have chicken stock in it including Alfredo Sauce!! We finally got a rigatoni with marinara and bunch of vegetables which was poorly made. As if a child had opened the Ragu Marinara and dumped over the pasta and boiled vegetables. For this pasta we paid $22 !!!
Please note that this is an Italian restaurant but "they do not serve Gelato or Ice Creme" because they have only one freezer!!!
Please do not spoil your evening by going to this place.
My boyfriend took me to Portalli's for my birthday. We had a great table at the front window. We ordered cocktails and an appetizer. We had a problem with the appetizer, which was addressed by our waiter Tim. Soon thereafter, we had a visit from the restaurant manager, James, to apologize for the mishap. The rest of dinner was perfect, including the Braised Lamb Shank and Grilled Rockfish. We enjoyed a lovely dessert with champagne, and felt that our concerns over the appetizer were handled expertly by the staff. We would highly recommend Portalli's for a special occasion, or anytime you want a great meal at a reasonable price. Dinners were nicely sized for the price, and included options for everyone, including vegetarian meals. Special thanks to Tim and James for the wonderful service.
This restaurant was such a disappointment. The food was mediocre - I expected more creativity. The place seriously lacks in ambiance - both inside and out. We sat on the deck at a plastic table that was chipped and sharp. The deck needs flowers, candles, and table clothes......and a lot less wasps. All senses contribute to a wonderful dining experience and this place lacked in all categories.
The green pea risotto with shrimp was delicious, but what made the entire meal was the meringue dessert. We were there on Mothers Day and seated on the first floor; there were periods we had to shout to hear each other because of the acoustics in the small space. Waiter was friendly but service a bit slow; manager brought our meals but then sat with a group of his friends who were in, and he chatted with them rather than take our check payment. Overall, very tasty but some room for improvement in the service department.
Dinner for three on Mother's Day. They handled the busy holiday traffic well. Server GREG was extremely personable and helpful. All three of us enjoyed our meals and the evening. I have dined at Portalli's numerous times and will go again. Maybe not five stars, but at least four. If it is nice weather try to get a table on the outside deck.
We tried this restaurant by chance because our regular Mother's Day tapas choice was mysteriously closed. What great find! The decor is very simple but upscale. We worked our through the great variety of appetizer as a make shift tapas party. The oysters were our favorite. We'll be back next year for sure.
My dining experience was overshadowed by the poor service received. My server accidentally charged someone elses bill to my bank card. They did not rectify the problem for five days. They didn't make me aware of the mistake. I found out because I checked my account. I spoke to the both manager and the owner Ivan. Ivan assured me he would get back to me and he did not. I would never visit this establishment again. The integrity of the owner and staff is questionable.
The food was good. I cant say it was outstanding but for the price it was definitely worth it. I do object, though, to the fact that they raised the price by $10 for mothers day, and i didnt see it announced ANYWHERE except on the bill. So while i will go back, never on a special day. For that price i thought tea/coffee should be included. It was a bit crowded for food buffet but it was easy to get through. I'd like to have seen a list of what was upstairs vice down so i didnt run up and down. I dont remember the server coming back to see if we wanted another omlette (the eggs had stuff in it and so while i had not ordered an omlete when my husband got his, i would have asked for one later). The food was good and i'd go back for the regular price.
Went for my birthday and was delighted with the options for food and wine, the wait staff was very polite and knowledgeable, the food itself was excellent, and there was live music by this excellent pianist. he even let us pick a few pieces and he played while we sang along! 10/10 would eat there again.
A terrific restaurant for a family Sunday brunch. One of the few in the area with smoked salmon - a must for a decent meal. Bottomless bloody marys and mimosas for only five dollars more. Omelets to order as well as a solid buffet mean that all will leave sated. Definitely a go-to for a nice brunch experience.
We were seated immediately. Our waitress was there right away and helped us figure out the menu as well as wine selection. The food came pretty quickly and was delicious.
We were tempted for dessert, but had a long walk to the car.
We were there during spring fest and all of the staff we encountered were happy, energetic, and seemed to enjoy there job.
My wife and I arrived early (6:00 pm) to get a window seat in the bar area, our favorite spot - it allows us to watch the ambience of Old Town Ellicott City while sitting in the comfort of a friendly environment. Evan, our server (who was also the bar tender), greeted us, taking our drink order, as well as suggested an appetizer special that was very good (fried cheese curds, which were lightly breaded & deep fried, but not heavy). The main course for us both were also very good, as well as plentiful, as we both took home about 1/2 of our meals. With coffee as a close to the evening, this was a great way to celebrate our 38th wedding anniversary.
The restaurant was eerily empty the entire time we were there. Our reservation (which we did not need) was at 5:30pm on a Friday night. We were there about an hour and no one else dined in the dining room at all during the time. It was very strange. The food was tasty but a little pricey. Brunch is much better here.
