Port Gamble General Store & Café
The clam chowder was excellent but the fish and chips was burnt and dry.
We have not eaten here in months, so we were very surprised to see a drastic menu change. This would be a good breakfast or lunch venue, but the atmosphere is more cafe rather than restaurant, so certainly not what we're looking for in a Friday night dinner. We actually left without eating.
Thank you for hosting a great live music band, "Celtic Magic" -- a great night spot for lively St. Patrick's celebration, friendly service, good verity of cuisine, including gluten free and dairy free options! Friendly, intimate, and yet a good party atmosphere, all at the same time. Brava!
We went for St. Patrick's Day. Great Irish food and even greater Celtic band!
We've been coming here since they've started serving dinner. We love the space, the wait staff and the energy. When there was a change of chef - the then chef went to open a new space down the road - the food quality started suffering - now on our most recent visit - the menu was mainly sandwiches and burgers w/just a couple of other entrée selections. it is disappointing and we probably wont be back until they figure out their chef situation and menu.
Shrimp in the salad was mostly raw.
Caesar salad itself was a mass of mayonnaise dressing. Cold french fries.
Overall: God awful.
We always enjoy dining at the café and hope that you will be there for a LONG time. We are never disappointed when we dine with you. Keep up the great work. You are a diamond for the North Kitsap area and will remain as the #1 dining spot in Kitsap county for us.
We ate here while visiting family in the area. We were 5 adults. David was our waiter and did a good job. I had the fish and chips made from Rock Fish, which was good, as was the tarter sauce. My husband had the PG burger, nice and spicy and good! My uncle had the bread pudding for dessert with a serving size that was about a fourth of an entire 4 layer cake. HUGE and he had that for dessert 2 nights hence. My husband had the 4 layer chocolate cake, which he liked, but refridgerated cake is not to my liking. This is a very small place of just a couple tables mainly built for 4 people, several tables for 2 and only 1 table that holds 6. They also have a bar that serves a happy hour menu as well as the full dinner menu. I think they also have a separate dining room if you book a large party. All in all, we would return!
This restaurant has very good food. However, they have no heating system. It was uncomfortably cold. We ate fast!
Great food, over priced, poor service. We still had a good time
Just didn't like it
We have been to Port Gamble Café several times over the last few years and have been generally happy with both the service and particularly with the Chef's efforts to bring high quality local food to Kitsap County. However, in this case we were disappointed. The service was not commiserate with the price of the meal - the wait staff on this Friday night consisted of one person in the dining room who was rather nonchalant about the whole thing. Additionally the dishes I had (Roasted chicken for the entrée and an small Cesar Salad before) were both exceedingly salty. This really surprised me since I normally am either happy with the salt level or add a little. The meals the rest of our party of 4 had were not salty but were not particularly noteworthy either - this was definitely not one of the Cafe's better nights.
We generally eat out about once every other week at a restaurant where we expect to spend between 50 to 100 dollars per person (including wine/drinks) but after this evening we have decided there are better options in Kitsap for such meals. We will try them again in a year or so.
Very good farmstyle food- takes some time to prepare- presented beautifully and the service is every friendly. Great for kids!
Great ambiance, exciting menu and typically fabulous. A favorite or ours in Kitsap County!
After a long day in the garden, my husband and I wanted amazing food, relaxed atmosphere and reasonable cost. As long time Bainbridge residents...we wanted to get off the island!
Pt. Gamble exceeded all of our wishes. We split a starter, salad and large fish and chips and dessert.
Amazing vegetable fritters with stuffed squash blossom were lite and tasty...I could have made this my entire meal. Super fresh salad with julienned apple, fennel, nuts, mizuna greens with a light dressing. Refreshing and healthful. Crisp and succulent, the fish and chips are some of the best I have ever tasted. We opted for the sweet potato fries.
Although the Plum Galette wasn't exactly my taste, it was well executed and my husband had no trouble finishing the plate. As it was very tart and a little dry, it could have used a large dollop of whipped cream! But, at the last minute, I ordered a Mini Bliss to go. It didn't make it out of the parking lot...cream filled, moist chocolate cake with a chocolate glaze. Like the Hostess HoHo of your dreams.
So many people recommended the General Store and Cafe that I wanted to try it. They had all been there for lunch and raved about the food. Unfortunately, dinner was not that good when I went there. The appetizer was bacon wrapped dates and were over cooked: the bacon was far too crispy to be flavorful. The steak I ordered for $32.00 was only so-so; there was gristle and tough connective tissue and the accompanying potatoes were ok but not what I would expect for the price of the meal. The one good thing was the delicious wine: Negroamaro. I might go back for lunch, but not for dinner.
After enjoying a matinee show at the Port Gamble Theater, we settled in to top off the afternoon with some libations and dinner.
After a minor confusion with our reservation, we were treated with great service and excellent food. (Our server suggested an excellent brew from a large selection, based upon her determination made by a few key questions about our taste).
The food selected was prepared with care and was excellent in quality and quantity!
We had a reservation and were seated promptly. Water was served with menus. We had to wait 26 minutes for our next encounter with the staff. the place was busy, staff members were running through the dining area, while another seemingly had little to do. It was clear that our waiter had to take care of more tables than he was able. He seemed hurried, took a remarkably long time to punch in orders into the computer. We tried several times to get him to stop at our table so that we could order an appetizer. Finally one of our guests put her arm out to stop him. He became irate at that. Only then were we able to put in our drink orders. Once the order was in the food was delivered promptly and it was hot. the food was good, but they should compare the amount served vs the price in other nearby restaurants regarding the fish and chips. We didn't stick around for desert.
We have been twice and food is very good! Love the view!!
Our previous experiences (over 2 years ago) were great. The menu and dinners were very good. The current dinner menu did not meet our expectations. There really was not anything on the dinner menu that appealed to us. I ordered the salmon saled and I could not see or taste any smoked salmon.
The restaurant was very noisy (too noisy for us) the evening we were there. Our previous dinners were in the back room which was much more enjoyable.
We were pretty disappointed in how loud the restaurant was. My husband and I had breakfast there a while back and loved it. We were on the other side of the restaurant and it was comfortable and not noisy. But that room was closed and the small room was ridiculously loud. Also, our reservations were for 6 and our poor waiter was so embarrassed to have to tell us that several items on the menu were already out. You could see it really stressed him out. We will probably never eat dinner there again.
Service was terrible. Food was worse.
Total gem at the end of the road- yum!
Would like to see more professional servers. restaurant needs hooks and or area to hang coats.
We were hoping to get brunch at 11 am, but only lunch available. Least satisfying was that the wheat bread used on all the chicken salad sandwiches was very dry...crumbling in your hands dry. And the fries were not good. We won't be returning for lunch. A good professional wait person
This is a wonderful restaurant.
Great service and atmosphere.
The food is delicious. I love the northwest omelet. It's always consistent. We love it!
Love the food here. Some things are always there and there are new things added often. Only problem is noise. If they could add some baffles to muffle the noise, it would be a great improvement. Our last time here a few nights ago, it was winter and not as crowded as it can be in the summer. A party of four can barely hear each other, so a bigger group is challenging. I hope the find a way to fix this!
Have been here 3-4 times. When the cafe opened the food was excellent and service was fine. Subsequent times have had lackluster or less than it should be service and the food is fine, but not excellent. Still a good spot for lunch in the summer with the amazing view while eating on the deck.
Good food, view, and service! Highly recommend their crab benedict. It's definitely the pulse of the town, but what a pulse! Be sure to check the gardens across the street at the post office- so beautiful!!
Outstanding food and service. Presentation of food was artful and the desserts were outrageous! Servings for the appetizers and main course were a little small, but extremely tasteful.
Everyone was friendly, helpful and attentive.
We love the general store and the whole feel of the place with it's small town feel.
Beautiful spot in a charming little town. Delicious food expertly presented. Great wait staff. What more could you ask for?!
Cafe sits in scenic Port Gamble with water views. It is a great location for a rest and meal when traveling between Seattle ferries and the Olympic Peninsula. Or a great destination to meet friends for a meal. Cafe uses local foods and has a diverse menu. Fish tacos had a generous amount of fish and three tasty house made hot sauces as options. Fun bar -- watched a Mariners game while having brunch. Amazing desserts -- share one for the table.
The limited menu has several interesting choices. The bacon wrapped dates are amazing. The wine list has several unusual choices such as wines from Croatia and Slovenia. The local beer choices are excellent. Charging for bread seems petty when ordering entrees.
Our group of 11 enjoyed a delicious lunch of assorted sandwiches, salads, and soups. Every item we ordered was a winner. Then we ordered desserts, which looked fantastic in the bakery case and tasted even better. Our issue was with our server. Some of us wanted to split desserts. There was a mixup where two people who wanted half portions received full portions, and someone who wanted a full portion never received one at all. Our server complained that she was very busy and hoped we didn't expect her to pay for the error. We were willing to pay the extra charges, but did not appreciate her attitude.
This is a fantastic culinary gem in an unexpected location. Love their menu creativity and successful kitchen execution. Definitely our favorite in the otherwise dismal dining options within Kitsap County.
First, our waiter Troy, was beyond excellent. He was personable and attentive. We were a group of 8 women from Port Townsend who try a different restaurant each month. This was perfect. The food presentation (lunch) was great and the food was prepared to our personal tastes. We'll be back!
We've been to Port Gamble Cafe many times over the past several years, but this visit was VERY disappointing. Some of our favorite dishes were poorly prepared, and when I asked the waitress to let the chef know, there was no apology; just a sneer as she was walking away. Sadly to say we won't be returning anytime soon...
We think the breakfast at this restaurant is wonderful and worth the 45 minute drive it takes us to get to the restaurant. We were very disappointed with are first ( and only) dinner here. The service was slow and the food not worth the wait (or drive) The French fries and Scotch Egg were burnt, the peaches in the dessert pie appeared to be canned. Very disappointed.
We ordered the baked cheese appetizer (brie, figs). It was 75% fig -- you could not see or taste the cheese. The gnocchi was good. My husband said the reuben was the best he'd ever had. My fish and chips were about a 6 out of 10. My friend had a glass of sauvignon blanc, which was delicious, but it cost $11 and was a very small pour. Service was pretty good.
Great place to eat. Always a wonderful time, and the best food! Went there for a brunch date and it couldn't have been more perfect. Service was excellent, and the food was amazing. I love seeing organic options. I highly recommend for everyone. Great place for vegatrians too, tons of options!
