Poppy's Italiano Ratings and Reviews
IMO the best Italian in the Jacksonville/Saint Johns Area and we have been to many. Having come from the NY/NJ area that says a lot. My wife and I and our dinning friends always enjoy going to this restaurant. We have been there many times and have never been disappointed. Reserve a table online and you wont be waiting in line for one at 7 PM. Needless to say we will be going there often.
My wife, daughter, granddaughter and I had dinner at Poppy's the night before the DONNA Marathon to carbo-load for the race. We selected Poppy's based on the positive reviews from other diners since we were unfamiliar with the Ponte Vedra Beach area. We couldn't have been more pleased with the restaurant. It is a true Italian restaurant with a excellent food, very friendly ambiance, and exceptional service.
This is one of our favorite restaurants because the food and service is always great. Renata was our waitress and she did an absolute a great job. We had a variety of meals from the chicken parmigiana, cheese tortellini, to the lasagna and chicken picatta. Everyone loved their food and the fresh garlic bread is always great. A great local restaurant and we love that we can make reservations in advance. Always a good time when we go there.
Overall the food was good. Was sold on the limoncello cake that turned out to be a lightly-flavored lemon chiffon cake that tasted more vanilla than lemon so left most of it. Was looking for that bold lemon alcohol flavor. Flounder special was excellent. And who ever thought bringing s screaming baby in at 8:30 was a good a idea needs their head examined. Not the restaurant's fault but certainly affected the ambiance.
Everything was good but one of my chicken cutlets was burnt and the he waiter pretended he didn’t know what I was talking about. “Burnt ??” I should not have been served a burnt chicken cutlet. He handed us our check before even checking checking if maybe we wanted dessert. We had to ask him for dessert menu
Both the food and service were excellent. The hot baked garlic bread was wonderful. The salads were nice size and tasty. Both salad and bread came with meals. The shrimp scampi had plenty of large fresh Mayport shrimp and was large portion. The chicken parmesan was tasty and large chicken breast was so tender. We couldn't eat all of it and took some home for the next day. We definitely will go back to this restaurant. The service was wonderful too.
We always have a great meal at Poppy's. This reservation was for six and included four guests from out of town who we were entertaining. The evening was perfect and our guests were very impressed with everything. We especially enjoyed the live music (an accordion player) on a Friday night. We try to make a reservation talking advantage of their early bird special which is a significant bargain. It was wonderful to have four dinner (two couples split their order) which included salad, bread, entree and a glass of wine) for under $75 including tip.
Authentic Italian fare. Appears to be family owned and operated. Good service, attentive. A casual dining atmosphere. It can be a little difficult to find so have gps available. I found it well worth the drive and there was enough left over for dinner the next night.
We have found it extremely difficult to find a reasonably priced, restaurant with good food, where you can have a delicious meal and quiet conversation. There were no pesky fans blowing cold air on us and there was no bar noise to contend with (and still have our alcohol) nor loud tv's and loud music. This is a place where one can actually dine at tables with white linen tablecloths. For us it was a breath of fresh air.
They messed up OpenTable and forgot to change their close time to 8pm instead of 9pm. Our reservation was for 8:45. We were called and texted asking if we were coming and I told them yes. They said “OpenTable messed up and took reservations after their close time which was 8pm”. I immediately hoped that we would still get a good meal, especially since the reviews for this place were so good. Well besides the server, who was amazing, everything else was a huge disappointment. We were the last ones in the restaurant and all we could hear were how much money the servers didn’t make and if they were going to have a beer while they cleaned up. The manager on duty wanted nothing more than for them to hurry up so she could get out of there. As an Italian who runs restaurants and has vast knowledge of OpenTable based on our experience we will never be back. Also to the Chef.... too much raw garlic is spicy and overpowering to the mouth. Either roast it or cook it with the meal more.
We are italian and this restaurant is far away from our Italian cusine. The cusine is adapted to the ameeican style and I am sorry to say we didn’t enjoy it
The seafood risotto was a soup with arborio rice and seafood on the top. Fish should have been incorporated in the risotto.
The calzone was stuffed with too much cheese and lots of spinaches. No tomato.
We love the food here and take out of towners here when they visit. They are so busy that sometimes, the waiter will pick up the wrong food. The last two times I was here, I ordered chicken scallopini and got veal scallopini and the last time I ordered Shrimp Scampi and got Shrimp and Scallop del Rosa. Both were very good but make sure you get what you order.
