Poppy's Italiano Ratings and Reviews
We love the food here and take out of towners here when they visit. They are so busy that sometimes, the waiter will pick up the wrong food. The last two times I was here, I ordered chicken scallopini and got veal scallopini and the last time I ordered Shrimp Scampi and got Shrimp and Scallop del Rosa. Both were very good but make sure you get what you order.
Excellent Italian restaurant. Starting from their homemade garlic bread, salad or soup provided with the main course, all 3 different main dishes (2 veal dishes, 1 special of the day grouper) we had and finally the chocolate gelato for dessert. Not a large place so recommend reservations unless you want to wait long. Accordion player throughout the evening at a tolerable level. Ask for one of the booths in back to be away from it if you don't like the music.
For years I have eaten at and recommended Poppy's to my friends and parishioners. But I will not go back again. Last Friday with a friend we arrived and were seated before 5:30 but when the waiter came some minutes later to take our order we were told we could not order from the early-bird special because it was now past 5:30. Though it cost me an extra $20, it will cost Poppy's more in loss of reputation and of a steady customer.
This restaurant appears unassuming from outside but there’s something special about it. The interior is nicer than the outside would have you think. It’s comfortable, not pretentious, nicely adorned with paintings of Venice, Amalfi, etc. A very nice accordion player is just the right touch on weekends but was not there tonight. Hoping to see him again. Service is consistently better than expected, like they look for opportunities to shine, tactfully sharing some helpful insight or service. The food follows the same rule— somehow exceeding expectations each visit. Can’t wait to return.
We eat frequently at Poppy’s. The service and manager are always responsive and capable.
The sauce is the best in town.
Pizza is #2 in town, with plenty of each topping ordered.
Pastas are all excellent and Marsala, Francesca and Florentines are all above average. Only caution is that the standard garlic bread is loaded- we prefer the bread (always fresh) plain.
Poppys is a winner for me and several friends. One who is from up north said it was as good as what she grew up on and she wouldn’t be going to any chain Italian places any more. I’ve brought at least 4 people to Poppys fan status. The Local Flavor deals also are great when I can get them, but the Early Bird specials can’t be beat!
A small, quiet but friendly place to dine. The menu is varied enough to appeal to all tastes (i.e. meat, poultry, seafood, vegetarian). They serve wine and beer only but that should not detract from the menu. The server was very friendly and attentive. They can take larger groups also, with some advance notice.
Had read lots of 5 star reviews on Poppy's so we gave it a try. The place is right out of the 70s. We walked in to a live accordion performance by an older gentleman. The menu is extensive but the fare was only average. I think the great reviews come from the size of the portions rather than the quality of the food. Almost every diner walked out with a box of leftovers....clearly enough food for at least one more meal. My wife and her sister shared a pizza and were very disappointed. The crust was doughy...almost like a canned pizza dough you can get at Publix. My baked pasta dish was nothing special. Service was good but kind of perfunctory. Cleary we won't be hurrying back.
As always Poppy’s was exceptional. Veal Marsala and chicken version of the Scarparella. Way too much but finished it anyway. The new experience this trip was that our usual requested waiter Stefano was MIA but Martin did not miss a beat and provided a first class experience for us. This is our go to place for a feel good but well executed dinner.
Meal was great. We were celebrating a birthday. The server brought our checks to the table when we had finished our meals without asking us if we wanted coffee or dessert. It was like he was rushing us out. We had to ask about dessert. The service is normally better than this.
Very impressed, Excellent food at fair prices. Service was good not great . I felt that food wise this was if not the best one of the best in the Jacksonville area, It could use a better beer selection. There are several local craft breweries that would really dress up the selection.
