About Poor Calvin's
We know the word "fusion" has been wielded about to justify everything from Hula Burgers to Mexican lasagna. But the East-meets-South brand of fusion happening at Poor Calvin's? It's creative; it's innovative; and it's probably unlike anything you've tasted in the ATL. After working in kitchens around the world, Calvin Phan wanted to shake things up a little. And so, into the mac 'n cheese, the Thai spices went. Now, Calvin's giving Southern staples, like sea bass and fried chicken, a decidedly creative Asian-inspired twist (and a nip of spice, too). We didn't think good old-fashioned mac 'n cheese could get much better. And then, we tried Calvin's ridiculously rich take on the cheesy classic, gussied up with chunks of lobster and given a zing with Thai spices. This, and more innovative dishes, approached in much the same way, leave the hands of Calvin Phan day in and day out. His dedication and attention to detail are evident in each dish and dessert. You won't be disappointed.

Poor Calvin's Ratings and Reviews
Fantastic service from the moment we walked in the restaurant. We began our dinner by ordering two Rhett’s Old-Fashioned’s. The bartender couldn’t have made our drinks any better. It was delicious. My date ordered the Filet Mignon. I don’t believe that’s on the regular menu, but nonetheless, it was delicious. I ordered be pan-seared duck and tiger shrimp. We both paired our meals with a very tasty Cabernet. Every part of our meal was amazing. Food was fresh and promptly served. Would definitely recommend and we will be returning.
Had heard good things so checked it out ourselves for lunch on Valentines Day. What a day to go. We got lucky as Chef Phan was in the kitchen hard at work. As it was lunch and we were limited on time, didn't do the usual "clean the menu" deal. There were a lot of Spring Rolls passing our table on the way to others, but we did manage the highly recommended Deviled Eggs - creative and balanced. What a bite. Then we ate Pineapple Chicken Fried Rice and my favorite, the Curry Fish bowl. Really solid well balanced flavors. Was the first time we'd been but we are definitely going back. Our server was awesome too.....took the time to walk us through the menu but let us make up our own minds in the end. Highly recommend Poor Calvin's
my partner and i had a wonderful time! i've been to poor calvin's multiple times, she had not and i was super excited to share the experience with her. we had wonderful cocktails, a great server and most importantly great food!
the only complaint was the table behind us who were a little loud. it wasn't anything to complain about but we were happy when they left.
i loved that they offer a free uber ride back to your hotel. although i ended up not using this option, it was great to have it available.
FANTASTIC restaurant! Had the beef tips, hushpuppies (daily special), lobster fried rice, and huge piece of cake for dessert. What really stole the show was our server. I wish I could remember his name, but he did a great job taking care of my boyfriend and I for valentine's day. Ambiance is wonderful and our reservation was honored right when we walked in. The food was very good, but not the same caliber as the service and ambiance. The lobster fried rice sounded great in theory but was not as good as I thought it would be. However, the hush puppies, beef tips, and dessert were spot on. Overall, very happy and will be back.
We went for brunch. The restaurant opens at 11:30am, however, the staff allowed a line to form and didn’t open until after 11:40. When we asked to move from a table located by a waiter stand our initial waiter told us no. Although the place was empty, he went so far as to lie and tell us all of the tables were specially reserved for people who requested each specific table.
We were of course able to move after speaking to the manager. (And we could hear the server relaying the story to the manager and using profanity) The food was delicious and our new server was excellent. However, I was extremely disappointed that the manager did not check on us and did not offer as much as a complimentary appetizer to make up for the servers horrible customer service. I will not be back.
Food and service was great but the noise level in the room with all the windows and tin ceiling was way too loud for conversation. They need to figure out a way to make the environment for conversation more tolerable. I had trouble hearing my friend who was sitting across from me at a small table for two.
I always love dining at Poor Calvins when in Atlanta. The food is delicious, our server was attentive without being annoying and you get a lot of food for your money. The only thing that dampened our experience a bit was the noise level on the porch. I’m not sure if it was due to noisy patrons or if the acoustics on the porch just cause the sound to be amplified but my friend and I could barely hear each other across the table. Being from New England, we really enjoyed the Southern cuisine in the restaurant does it wonderfully!!
Good food, but a rough start with a manager who wouldn’t seat our party without everyone there (we were missing one memeber of our party of 6, who was stuck in traffic). We stood NEXT to the empty table we had reserved, and couldn’t reason with them for us to be sat so we could at least order some cocktails and apps. Service was slow, had to ask our waitress several times for the same items. Food was tasty with large portions for sharing, but I won’t be in a hurry to go back.
We weren’t sure what to expect from a so called “Fusion” spot but this place is legit in both Fusion and Foodie Status. We were seated promptly and ordered three+ drinks, three apps, three entrees and one gigantic dessert to share over coffee. Seafood Springroll - crispy yet light with an amazing dipping sauce! Steamed dumplings - fresh and hot with the right dumpling to filling ratio. Deviled Eggs with Korean BBQ beef and caviar - you read that right. It was out of this world! Three best things in one spectacular bite. Entrees: Lobster Fried Rice - need I say more? Everything about it was fresh, not overly salted and tender lobster meat. Fried Chicken with Lobster Mac and Cheese and Collared Greens - Thai curry twist in the Mac. Fried chicken was everything you want fried chicken to be and more. Star of the night was the Crispy Beef. As one diner put it, it was like Mongolian Beef on steroids. BEST crispy beef EVER. PERIOD. Tender YET crispy beef (how do they do it?!!) with sautéed veg and this BUDBOMB coconut brown rice. Dessert - RED. VELVET. CAKE. Sandwiched with mascarpone tapioca whipped cream with fresh strawberries and the back dunked in dark chocolate ganache. Slice is giant. Shareable. Decadent. Perfect finish to the best meal we’ve had in ATL so far! Do yourself a favor. Go there now.
Loved the beauty and coziness of the atmosphere! We sat by the fireplace which was perfect for a chilly night! The food and service was impeccable! Enjoyed the lobster fried rice, calamari, and lobster fritters!! And to top it off, didn’t have to pay expensive parking!
