About Poor Calvin's
We know the word "fusion" has been wielded about to justify everything from Hula Burgers to Mexican lasagna. But the East-meets-South brand of fusion happening at Poor Calvin's? It's creative; it's innovative; and it's probably unlike anything you've tasted in the ATL. After working in kitchens around the world, Calvin Phan wanted to shake things up a little. And so, into the mac 'n cheese, the Thai spices went. Now, Calvin's giving Southern staples, like sea bass and fried chicken, a decidedly creative Asian-inspired twist (and a nip of spice, too). We didn't think good old-fashioned mac 'n cheese could get much better. And then, we tried Calvin's ridiculously rich take on the cheesy classic, gussied up with chunks of lobster and given a zing with Thai spices. This, and more innovative dishes, approached in much the same way, leave the hands of Calvin Phan day in and day out. His dedication and attention to detail are evident in each dish and dessert. You won't be disappointed.

Poor Calvin's Ratings and Reviews
Service needs to be improved. This was my second visit to Poor Calvin's. Once with girlfriends and most recently with family. On both occasions, I felt rushed to order or leave. Promptly at 9:30pm, a host asked us to leave by stating 'we can't hold the table any longer as we have other guest'. Hmmm... we were a party of 5 who didn't skim on our selections. Appears rude and lacks class.
My experience with Poor Calvin’s was not what I expected. I heard such great things about this restaurant, while the food was great my our server was amazing. The hostess and manager were not pleasant. I was told that we had to be done by eating by a certain time as confirming the appointment and that was unsettling. We were running about 15 minutes last due to horrible traffic in Atlanta and they weren’t understanding about that. This was dinner for a friends birthday, a time to celebrate and have fun and the service put a damper on our night especially being asked to leave after we ate dinner. That was rude.
Great ambiance and service. However, the food is average taste. It has nothing special to it. I do not mind paying a lot of money for food if it’s great, however this was just an average meal. Lamb chops were way too sweet where you can only taste the sweetness and not the meat. My wife’s salmon was the exam same as one would cook at home. $140 bill for two is a little too much. I would have left an amazing review with 5 stars if the food had something special to it.
My good friend was visiting from NY and I wanted to take her to a unique place she had never been before. Poor Calvin's did not dissapoint! She enjoyed her food very much, our server was nice and I most definitely plan on bringing all of my out of town friends to Poor Calvin's!
From the greeting with a smile to the departure entreating us to come again, our dining experience at Poor Calvin’s did not disappoint! The service was spot on as our server, Tim, was quite knowledgeable of the menu and always appeared at just the right time with a warm smile on his face. The food was spectacular, and just as I had been told it would be. Lobster Mac and cheese, so yummy, and we went for the double carb/ double lobster with the lobster fried rice. Finally, the pièce de résistance, the peach and goat cheese empanadas. I think my taste buds took me straight to heaven! A spectacular culinary experience!
Poor Calvins was exactly what we had been seeking since moving to Atlanta. Great menu!!! Unique options that make you go... HMMM? At first... But try any of the options and you'll be impressed!! Service was fantastic and the owner stopped by the table. We are looking for an opportunity to return!!!
This was our third or fourth visit. We keep coming back because the food is very good. Poor Calvin’s never disappoints. The menu is always different.
On this visit, I really wanted the Grouper Thai Curry. But I was informed it contained cream, in addition to coconut milk. (I’m lactose intolerant and ingesting cream sends me to the nearest ER.). Not to be disappointed, I asked about the possibility of making a slight change to the item. I learned Calvin does not make changes or substitutions to his menu. Alas, I gave in and ordered the Vegan Curry and an order of Coconut Shrimp for protein, as I’m not a fan of Tofu that comes in the Vegan Curry. After taking my first bites, I decided that it was perfectly okay for Calvin to be temperamental. After all, most geniuses are, right? My food was “off the chart” delicious! The Curry wasn’t heavy or overpowering. It was light and flavorful, with the perfect amount of “kick.” My spouse ordered the Pan Seared Chilean Sea Bass. It was equally delicious. We can hardly wait to eat at Poor Calvin’s again!
