About Poor Calvin's
We know the word "fusion" has been wielded about to justify everything from Hula Burgers to Mexican lasagna. But the East-meets-South brand of fusion happening at Poor Calvin's? It's creative; it's innovative; and it's probably unlike anything you've tasted in the ATL. After working in kitchens around the world, Calvin Phan wanted to shake things up a little. And so, into the mac 'n cheese, the Thai spices went. Now, Calvin's giving Southern staples, like sea bass and fried chicken, a decidedly creative Asian-inspired twist (and a nip of spice, too). We didn't think good old-fashioned mac 'n cheese could get much better. And then, we tried Calvin's ridiculously rich take on the cheesy classic, gussied up with chunks of lobster and given a zing with Thai spices. This, and more innovative dishes, approached in much the same way, leave the hands of Calvin Phan day in and day out. His dedication and attention to detail are evident in each dish and dessert. You won't be disappointed.

Poor Calvin's Ratings and Reviews
Went for the first time on my birthday/first date (so to speak) and it was amazing. Asked for a romantic spot and it was given. Food was phenomenal. We had the grape smash cocktail, seafood spring rolls, lobster Mac and cheese, and lobster fried rice. All were absolutely delicious. Our server’s name was Haze and he was the best! And valet was complimentary. I would highly recommend this restaurant. Can’t wait to go back.
We were seated at a table that was darker than dark. Had to take out our phones to read the menu. The waiter never told us about the specials for appetizer. The food was beautifully presented, but lacked in much else. Our recommendation, go for the dessert. That was the best part of the dinner. Although they were told we were celebrating our anniversary it was not acknowledged in any way.
My boyfriend and I did a quick trip to Atlanta for the weekend. We landed Friday, checked in to our hotel and I opened up the Yelp app to see what restaurant recommendations there were. Poor Calvin's came up with amazing reviews. I made reservations for 9:00pm and the rest was history.
The atmosphere at the restaurant is cozy. I instantly felt at home when I walked in. They quickly sat us at our table and then the most magical part of the night happened. Our waitress made the night. She felt like an old friend. Recommended our drinks, apps, and what we should eat. She constantly checked in on us to make sure everything was great.
For the drinks I had the Dixie Derby and my partner had Calvin's Lychee Martini. Both drinks were amazing and left us wanting more...so we ordered a second order :)
For the appetizer we got the friend goat cheese with green tomatoes. When I tasted this I knew I was going to have fun at this restaurant. All the flavors were there, the sauces glazed on top made everything taste amazing.
For the entree I had the Crispy Beef with coconut rice, our server said there was no other rice to go with lol, so that's what I chose. My partner had the Pan Seared Chilean Seabass. My dish had amazing flavors and a little bit of spice to it. It was definitely a good choice. But I have to say my partner's seabass was amazing. Now I don't really like seafood, and when I tried this with all the sauces and veggies draped on it, it was like biting into a soft piece of butter. The fish was so tender and full of flavor, it fooled my tastebuds into thinking this wasn't seafood! AMAZING!
This place has it all. Great drinks, amazing food, warm ambiance, and what made the day was our amazing server. She even had her own tag-line that people yelled at her as they came into the restaurant. This was an amazing restaurant to start our trip to Atlanta!
Service needs to be improved. This was my second visit to Poor Calvin's. Once with girlfriends and most recently with family. On both occasions, I felt rushed to order or leave. Promptly at 9:30pm, a host asked us to leave by stating 'we can't hold the table any longer as we have other guest'. Hmmm... we were a party of 5 who didn't skim on our selections. Appears rude and lacks class.
My experience with Poor Calvin’s was not what I expected. I heard such great things about this restaurant, while the food was great my our server was amazing. The hostess and manager were not pleasant. I was told that we had to be done by eating by a certain time as confirming the appointment and that was unsettling. We were running about 15 minutes last due to horrible traffic in Atlanta and they weren’t understanding about that. This was dinner for a friends birthday, a time to celebrate and have fun and the service put a damper on our night especially being asked to leave after we ate dinner. That was rude.
Great ambiance and service. However, the food is average taste. It has nothing special to it. I do not mind paying a lot of money for food if it’s great, however this was just an average meal. Lamb chops were way too sweet where you can only taste the sweetness and not the meat. My wife’s salmon was the exam same as one would cook at home. $140 bill for two is a little too much. I would have left an amazing review with 5 stars if the food had something special to it.
My good friend was visiting from NY and I wanted to take her to a unique place she had never been before. Poor Calvin's did not dissapoint! She enjoyed her food very much, our server was nice and I most definitely plan on bringing all of my out of town friends to Poor Calvin's!
From the greeting with a smile to the departure entreating us to come again, our dining experience at Poor Calvin’s did not disappoint! The service was spot on as our server, Tim, was quite knowledgeable of the menu and always appeared at just the right time with a warm smile on his face. The food was spectacular, and just as I had been told it would be. Lobster Mac and cheese, so yummy, and we went for the double carb/ double lobster with the lobster fried rice. Finally, the pièce de résistance, the peach and goat cheese empanadas. I think my taste buds took me straight to heaven! A spectacular culinary experience!
