About Poor Calvin's
We know the word "fusion" has been wielded about to justify everything from Hula Burgers to Mexican lasagna. But the East-meets-South brand of fusion happening at Poor Calvin's? It's creative; it's innovative; and it's probably unlike anything you've tasted in the ATL. After working in kitchens around the world, Calvin Phan wanted to shake things up a little. And so, into the mac 'n cheese, the Thai spices went. Now, Calvin's giving Southern staples, like sea bass and fried chicken, a decidedly creative Asian-inspired twist (and a nip of spice, too). We didn't think good old-fashioned mac 'n cheese could get much better. And then, we tried Calvin's ridiculously rich take on the cheesy classic, gussied up with chunks of lobster and given a zing with Thai spices. This, and more innovative dishes, approached in much the same way, leave the hands of Calvin Phan day in and day out. His dedication and attention to detail are evident in each dish and dessert. You won't be disappointed.

Poor Calvin's Ratings and Reviews
Seating policy is ridiculous. We had reservations, arrived 5 minutes early with 3 of 4 guests and we were not allowed to be seated until the 4th arrived ... the restaurant's loss because we would have ordered more apps and more drinks ... bar was to busy to get drink beforehand while waiting.
Let me start by saying the ambiance and service were really good. I had a eaten here about 1.5 years ago and I had loved the food. Not sure if the chef changed but the food has noticeably degraded in quality. The spring roll starter was good. I wasn't thrilled with the cocktails but it was probably my fault for deciding to be creative and ordering the spicy Mango Jalapeno. I think the cocktail menu could use a revise, there's no point being creative if it doesn't taste good. The main course was terrible. I ordered the Shrimp Pad Thai and while the shrimp was okay, the noodles were sticky, very oily and in general not pleasant to eat. My boyfriend ordered the fried chicken with a side of lobster macaroni and found the chicken over-friend (nearly burnt) and the macaroni seemed not quite freshly cooked. The food is not cheap and we were expecting much better. Service was amazing.
Second visit. Both times the food was awesome. Service the first time was outstanding, but unfortunately on this past trip it was abysmal. Had I not been hosting a business dinner, I would have been very vocal with the manager. Our waiter was one of the most inattentive I've ever had at any establishment. So great food, but apparently hit or miss on service.
OMG....my new favorite restaurant when visiting Atlanta. We had a reservation and we were seated immediately entering the restaurant which almost never happens. We were then right away welcomed by a fabulous friendly charming waiter and the experience kept getting better....then the food and then the velvet cake for dessert all fabulous...run to this restaurant and prices very reasonable for the food....cant wait to go back.
I have been going to Poor Calvin's since day one. And still every single time I go, the experience exceeds all my expectations. This is my go to spot to take out of towners, friends, family, and business associates. The food is impeccable, the service is outstanding and personable, the ambiance is urban and cool. Ask for Lowla, she is hands down the BEST server in ALL of ATL! You cannot go wrong for lunch, dinner or brunch. I prefer a nice Saturday or Sunday brunch with libations. The bar is fully and very well stocked. They have some signature drinks that are incredible. Try the Hennessy Grape Smash. You will be addicted! I give this place 6 out of 5 stars~! Every, single, time! :)
Poor Calvin's is my HAPPY PLACE! James (the General Manager from the wonderful island of ARUBA!) is a true gem and the staff are all amazing! And the food is absolutely divine! So glad Calvin had a dream to open a restaurant! I cannot imagine Atlanta without my Happy Place.
This is not the place to book group events. I had been here before on a date and I thought it was cute so I decided to come back for my bridesmaid dinner however in a group setting they only allotted us a 2 hour time slot and they did not tell me that when I booked the dinner so they rushed us to eat and drink and the food is not that great it’s pretty but not good
The food was interesting and delicious. We went for brunch on a Saturday, and it was very busy. We ordered the lobster grilled cheese, the lobster fried rice, the chicken and waffles, lobster wontons and the dumplings. It was all tasty, and everyone was pleased.
The food was good, not the best I’ve ever had and certainly not cheap, but no complaints with the food.
The service was not, the service leve was Chili’s. Except for the manager, he was attentive and seemed to care. For the price level I expect higher level.
Shout out to Open Table though. They didn’t have any tables and were “completely full.” So it started with a snotty “you need a reservation here.” So I turned, opened the app and PRESTO! we had a reservation (though he said we only get an hour!)
The food choices from main entrees to deserts were amazing. Cant wait to try other items. Saw many dishes sent to other tables that looked incredible and I could tell by their expressions that it was as good as it looked. I had the Grouper Pad Thai and it was incredible. My wife had the duck and it to was top notch. Appetizers were great also. (Basil rolls and Lobster WonTon) And the HUGE piece of Red Velvet Suspension cake should not be missed. The portions are very large so bring your appetite and plan on leftovers. well don Poor Calvins!
