About Poor Calvin's
We know the word "fusion" has been wielded about to justify everything from Hula Burgers to Mexican lasagna. But the East-meets-South brand of fusion happening at Poor Calvin's? It's creative; it's innovative; and it's probably unlike anything you've tasted in the ATL. After working in kitchens around the world, Calvin Phan wanted to shake things up a little. And so, into the mac 'n cheese, the Thai spices went. Now, Calvin's giving Southern staples, like sea bass and fried chicken, a decidedly creative Asian-inspired twist (and a nip of spice, too). We didn't think good old-fashioned mac 'n cheese could get much better. And then, we tried Calvin's ridiculously rich take on the cheesy classic, gussied up with chunks of lobster and given a zing with Thai spices. This, and more innovative dishes, approached in much the same way, leave the hands of Calvin Phan day in and day out. His dedication and attention to detail are evident in each dish and dessert. You won't be disappointed.

Poor Calvin's Ratings and Reviews
Last night was our 17th Wedding Anniversary. Poor Calvin’s was an excellent choice. We were seated within minutes of arriving, the staff was friendly, including the valet. The food and drinks were immaculate. We will definitely be visiting Poor Calvin’s again.
Love this place. Food is always great, and they’ve got some amazing specialty drinks as well. I’ve been several times, and service has always been top notch. The servers are knowledgeable about each dish and drink, and are extremely attentive as well. Great place to eat!
Had a reservation for 7:15, took 7 minutes to be greeted by Alicia, then ordered 2 appetizers...she came back with drinks I asked if the appetizers were entered she said no. Didn't bother asking us if we were ready to order nor did she tell us any specials but turned to the table next to us (whom were sat 15 minutes after us) and proceeded to tell them the specials. We ended up walking out at 7:45.
Awesome! Chef Calvin packs flavor in everything he makes. We ordered for two appetizers, four different entrees, and two desserts. I would get all but two of them again. Lobster wontons were terrific. The frog legs were good but I wouldn't order again for the price. All entrees were terrific. The Kahlua cheesecake was great, but don't let the server light the alcohol and pour it over it; it created a burnt taste that none of us enjoyed. Definitely finish with the pound cake; exquisite! We will definitely eat here again when we visit Atlanta. Great special occasion restaurant.
I thoroughly enjoyed yet another dining experience at Poor Calvin's! This time a first time Poor Calvin's patron joined and he loved everything. Delicious appetizers - must try the Deviled Eggs (Korean BBQ beef, caviar, lychee glaze). I'm in love with the Fried Chicken and Lobster Mac & Cheese. I'll be back for sure when I need my "Absolute Fusion" fix. Yum!
This was my first time going to Poor Calvin's. My experience here started off on the wrong foot. Upon arrival to the rest the valet attendant stopped me as I pulled into the lot adjacent to the restaurant. Because I made an early reservation he had not set his signs up correctly yet and they were pointing in the wrong direction. He immediately informed me "this is my lot you are pulling into". I pointed at the signs and he stated "Oh I'm sorry".
I proceeded inside and I gave the hostess my name. She immediately took me to a corner aisle table. I do not like moving around each time a server walks by. I looked around and saw several empty tables. I respectfully asked about the tables and I was told they were reserved. I immediately reminded her that I did make a reservation. The hostess explained that people request certain seating sometimes and one of the seats I asked about was reserved for a couple that was celebrating an anniversary. I respect & understand that however, my reservation was at 5:15 and the anniversary couple was not due until 6:45. The hostess told me to hold on and left. Upon her return she escorted me to the table that was for the couple. I do not know why she didn't take me to one of the other empty tables. She then reminded me that she needed the table by 6:45(rude). It was after 5:30. The waiter, Robert, was pretty good. He explained the menu items well and gave me several great suggestions. The food and my drink were pretty good. I felt pretty aggravated that the hostess kept peeking around the corner to check on my progress every 10 minutes or so. I requested the drink menu prior to finishing my meal due to the first drink ( Mango Jalapeno) tasting so well. This was around 6:00. Guess what? It never arrived. There was a pretty fair amount of noise by a couple of groups that were adjacent to my table.
Overall my experience was well below my expectations in relation to the reviews and the price that you pay >$100.
Brunch was great! I had the lobster fried rice and my sister had the fish and grits. Both dishes were delicious. We shared an appetizer of crab fries, but we could have done without them. They were ok, but the entree was more than enough. The passion fruit frozen margarita was yummy!
Poor Calvin’s is absolutely wonderful! The ambiance is very cozy and romantic. The service was excellent. Everything our server recommended was amazing. The food is unexpected and delicious. From the Deviled Eggs to the Lobster Fried Rice. This place is a must visit.
Went for the first time on my birthday/first date (so to speak) and it was amazing. Asked for a romantic spot and it was given. Food was phenomenal. We had the grape smash cocktail, seafood spring rolls, lobster Mac and cheese, and lobster fried rice. All were absolutely delicious. Our server’s name was Haze and he was the best! And valet was complimentary. I would highly recommend this restaurant. Can’t wait to go back.
We were seated at a table that was darker than dark. Had to take out our phones to read the menu. The waiter never told us about the specials for appetizer. The food was beautifully presented, but lacked in much else. Our recommendation, go for the dessert. That was the best part of the dinner. Although they were told we were celebrating our anniversary it was not acknowledged in any way.
My boyfriend and I did a quick trip to Atlanta for the weekend. We landed Friday, checked in to our hotel and I opened up the Yelp app to see what restaurant recommendations there were. Poor Calvin's came up with amazing reviews. I made reservations for 9:00pm and the rest was history.
The atmosphere at the restaurant is cozy. I instantly felt at home when I walked in. They quickly sat us at our table and then the most magical part of the night happened. Our waitress made the night. She felt like an old friend. Recommended our drinks, apps, and what we should eat. She constantly checked in on us to make sure everything was great.
For the drinks I had the Dixie Derby and my partner had Calvin's Lychee Martini. Both drinks were amazing and left us wanting more...so we ordered a second order :)
For the appetizer we got the friend goat cheese with green tomatoes. When I tasted this I knew I was going to have fun at this restaurant. All the flavors were there, the sauces glazed on top made everything taste amazing.
For the entree I had the Crispy Beef with coconut rice, our server said there was no other rice to go with lol, so that's what I chose. My partner had the Pan Seared Chilean Seabass. My dish had amazing flavors and a little bit of spice to it. It was definitely a good choice. But I have to say my partner's seabass was amazing. Now I don't really like seafood, and when I tried this with all the sauces and veggies draped on it, it was like biting into a soft piece of butter. The fish was so tender and full of flavor, it fooled my tastebuds into thinking this wasn't seafood! AMAZING!
This place has it all. Great drinks, amazing food, warm ambiance, and what made the day was our amazing server. She even had her own tag-line that people yelled at her as they came into the restaurant. This was an amazing restaurant to start our trip to Atlanta!
