Fusion / Eclectic
We know the word "fusion" has been wielded about to justify everything from Hula Burgers to Mexican lasagna. But the East-meets-South brand of fusion happening at Poor Calvin's? It's creative; it's innovative; and it's probably unlike anything you've tasted in the ATL. After working in kitchens around the world, Calvin Phan wanted to shake things up a little. And so, into the mac 'n cheese, the Thai spices went. Now, Calvin's giving Southern staples, like sea bass and fried chicken, a decidedly creative Asian-inspired twist (and a nip of spice, too). We didn't think good old-fashioned mac 'n cheese could get much better. And then, we tried Calvin's ridiculously rich take on the cheesy classic, gussied up with chunks of lobster and given a zing with Thai spices. This, and more innovative dishes, approached in much the same way, leave the hands of Calvin Phan day in and day out. His dedication and attention to detail are evident in each dish and dessert. You won't be disappointed.

Despite COVID19 & CDC restrictions the staff still created a “normal” experience. The wait staff was very pleasant. The food was exceptional as always. Thank You Poor Calvin’s for making life seem a bit normal for change.

Return policy is extreme especially for drinks, server talked up a drink and I did not enjoy it. Still had to pay for it

Took the family to enjoy a nice e Sunday dinner. Area was THE BEST. She was attentive, gave lots of great suggestions & gave us our space to enjoy our meal. The sangria is so tasty & quite strong. We started w/the calamari, it was good with the Thai chili sauce, didn’t knock my socks off, just not very flavorful. My son got the shaking beef, the meat to veggie ratio was way off, there very little beef. The sauce was delicious, I took home a large portion of vegetables sautéed some shrimp & had it for leftovers. The sauce was very nice. My daughter ordered the fried chicken w/lobster mac & cheese. She appreciated the chicken not being veiny & she really liked the coating. The collard greens were nothing special. The crispy kale (garnish) was actually amazing. The lobster mac had a nice amount of lobster meat, but it was spicy & she is not a big fan of spicy food. At Carla’s recommendation I veered from my usual to try the lamb chops. I will say it was the right choice. I added the goat cheese ($3) which calmed down the spice of the seasoning on the lamb. It came w/mashed potatoes & sautéed cauliflower, both were in need of salt, but the flavor from the chops was so strong it all melted well together in my mouth. We passed on dessert, nothing jumped out at us.

Celebrated my birthday and the experience was amazing. Nice secluded section, great ambience, and perfect dessert options. Will recommend and revisit for my next event, hopefully corona would have subsided and I can make reservations for more than 2.

Poor Calvin’s delivered their excellent levels of service and meal quality despite the COVID-19 environment that we all find ourselves in these days. Our go to is always the fried chicken, and it was delicious as always. Our waitress was attentive and very patient with us as we placed orders. Our experience was a great escape from all of the craziness.

Wonderful as usual. The manager, James, made accommodations for my party. The server was polite, professional. The entire team was great. I was the only person in my party that had previously dined at Poor Calvin's. My guests were not disappointed and all (that reside in Atlanta and within driving distance of GA) commented they will return because they were blown away. This is a small venue, intimate and just right for me.

We are regulars to Poor Calvin’s and thoroughly enjoy every meal. The current surf and turf special, although massive in quantity, was less to be desired. It was just 2 jumbo shrimp and steak with a gang of potatoes. It was just OK, not as flavor packed as the staple dishes. We’ll still be back, for our staples :)
