Fusion / Eclectic
We know the word "fusion" has been wielded about to justify everything from Hula Burgers to Mexican lasagna. But the East-meets-South brand of fusion happening at Poor Calvin's? It's creative; it's innovative; and it's probably unlike anything you've tasted in the ATL. After working in kitchens around the world, Calvin Phan wanted to shake things up a little. And so, into the mac 'n cheese, the Thai spices went. Now, Calvin's giving Southern staples, like sea bass and fried chicken, a decidedly creative Asian-inspired twist (and a nip of spice, too). We didn't think good old-fashioned mac 'n cheese could get much better. And then, we tried Calvin's ridiculously rich take on the cheesy classic, gussied up with chunks of lobster and given a zing with Thai spices. This, and more innovative dishes, approached in much the same way, leave the hands of Calvin Phan day in and day out. His dedication and attention to detail are evident in each dish and dessert. You won't be disappointed.

My husband and I were in Atlanta for a weekend date which included the Set it Off play. We visited this restaurant following the recommendation of my husband’s friend. We arrived and struggled with parking however we did find parking less than a block up from the restaurant and the restaurant offers valet however it didn’t have a signage with pricing info which is why we opted out. We didn’t have a reservation and upon arrival we we told the wait would be about an hour and fifteen minutes. While waiting I quickly went in open table and found a reservation for 7:45 which meant we would only have to wait 15 minutes. It’s not a big restaurant?
,more like cozy slightly cramped without a stuffy feeling, no waiting space. We we called for our seats and were taken to the back-closed in patio part of the restaurant. We were seated right next to very drafty summer doors. Our waitress was very nice, we didn’t wait long for her to arrive to take our drink and app orders. We ordered the seafood springs rolls which my husband loved,I enjoyed them once I took out the calamari. For entrees we ordered lobster rice and fried chicken. Both came promptly w/ big portions. After I started eating my chicken breast, I was quickly not impressed. It was fried but still had rubbery skin in it it, the portion was inconsistent as parts were really thin and others sides had good meat. Lobster macaroni and collard greens cane with the chicken however I was so turned off by the chicken I didn’t really eat either. His entree was good, the lobster tail was fried perfectly and the rice was really good too, I ended eating the rest of his dish and abandoning mine. Our bill came to about 104 ( we had two rum and pineapple juice $22 total and the manager tool off half the price of my entree. I wouldn’t have minded the price if my entree wasn’t a flop.I really wanted to like it but I wouldn’t order it again. Not sure if I would visit this restaurant again but I wanted to share and menu is very limited

Despite not being able to hear anyone at our table because of the noise level the food and service were outstanding.

Not only is it an Atlanta favorite for us ——amazing food!—— but their staff is fantastic! Professional, fun, and they all can explain what you’re ordering in great, precise detail. Love Poor Calvin’s!

My friend wanted to visit ATL for her birthday and I knew Poor Calvin’s was the place to celebrate! We enjoyed the Red Sangria and were not disappointed by the chef’s special - meatloaf (with Thai spices) and the Chilean Sea Bass, both delicious!! We had the pound cake (green) with butter pecan ice cream as recommended by our server; although it looked “interesting” when it arrived, I can assure you it was very tasty. Every dish at Poor Calvin’s is unique and delicious and the service is always outstanding!

Received the absolute best service from Christopher today.

Stopped in for lunch and had the Mashed Potato Broccol app.. it was just ok..

However.. my crab stuffed grilled cheese was to die for .. and then potato wedges that accompanied it was the truth!

My date had the lobster fried rice which did not disappoint..

The lychee martini (I had 2 because it was 5 o’clock somewhere right?) opened my eyes to happiness!

This place is and always has been the best there ever has been!

Amazing food! Our table had the beat salad, curry cauliflower, fried chicken and crab cakes with corn muffiins. Everything we ordered was wonderful. Our server was so sweet. Adorable looking restaurant. I will go back the next time I am in Atlanta.

Came here with my family for my 30th birthday dinner. Although they did not have a kids menu for my nephew, we still all found something to eat. My whole family raved about the food the whole time. The portions are huge and we all left with leftovers, so you definitely get your money’s worth. They also brought me a cake slice with a candle which was nice but not over the top (which I appreciate). The service was great, the drinks were great, the food was amazing and the atmosphere was wonderful. 10/10

Let me just start by saying the food & service is so good here we have already have reservations for our next visit! We went the day after Valentines Day but it was a Saturday so it was still packed. We had a reservation but wanted to move the time up. We were accommodated after a brief wait. We of course had the signature lobster mac n cheese along with mussels to start. Both were delicious. The Mac n cheese is more cream n cheese, but very comforting & decadent. It had a fair amount of lobster but not an over abundance. The mussels in a lemongrass sauce were small but tasty. I had the lamb chops- all FOUR of them - & OMG they were cooked to perfection! Do yourself a favor & go all in with the goat cheese & red wine reduction mint jelly accompaniments. You will not be sorry! The hubby had the seafood melange which was fabulous & plentiful! We had enough food to bring home for a second dinner the next night! It is our new favorite & we will not be satisfied until we eat everything on the menu!

Saturday after Valentines Day - extremely glad we made a reservation. It was packed. The risotto appetizer was outstanding. I could’ve eaten a meal of that. The lobster fried rice was good, as was the duck. The lobster ravioli was okay. Drinks were great too, but leaving with a $300.00 bill for four people was a little steep. Don’t get me wrong it’s an incredible restaurant, but it’s a bit overpriced for the extremely close tables and loud atmosphere.

Went after valentines. It’s a very nice cozy place. Food was great we had the dumplings, fried chicken, calamari, lobster rice, deviled eggs, lamb chops, and drinks. We indulged to say the least. But we all enjoyed our meals. Our waitress was very knowledgeable of the menu I didn’t get her name but she was so sweet. We have have already planned to visit again to try more items on the menu (the cakes).

I was fortunate enough to get a reservation after checking back several times. Wow. I’m so glad I persevered because my husband and I are just visiting Atlanta and didn’t know when we’d have another chance to dine here. We saw the Lobster Fried Rice on “Best Thing I Ever Ate”. That was no lie. It is among the best things I’ve eaten as well! The surprise hit was the mussels in lemongrass broth that our server, Rolando described as “mouthwatering”. I ate that broth like soup ... it was amazing. Rolando was INCREDIBLE. He made our visit that much more wonderful with his wit, charm and efficiency. The entire staff treats you like a welcome visitor to their homes from the minute you walk in, until you leave. One of my favorite parts is the walk through the expo area to your table. It’s a fun reminder of the heart of the restaurant before and after dining. I highly recommend Poor Calvin’s, whether you are visiting Atlanta or reside here. Make reservations for ease, but know that walk-ins are treated courteously and welcomed as well.

Had 9:30PM reservations and was not seated until 10:00PM.
The restaurant is very small and there were a lot of people waiting to be seated which caused for a congested atmosphere.

Food was pretty good and portions were really good. Overall it was a nice experience but the long wait to be seated, lack-luster ambiance and small venue size took away from the experience. Our server was very nice.

The lobster fried rice was enjoyable. The seafood spring rolls had a strange taste. So, I would not recommend those. It's a very small quaint place. I knew that so I won't penalize for being seated right in front of the kitchen door and having to hear "coming up", "coming down", "guest coming through", etc. throughout our entire meal. For as early as we were seated and the place had numerous tables open, still trying to figure out why we were seated there.
