Poggio Ratings and Reviews
The greeter/reservationist was horrible. The reservationist did not only not recognize my Open Table reservation, but also the 3rd member of the party no acknowledgement when she arrived at the restaurant . Additionally, the bill payment was handled very poorly. The food fortunately was very good.
Very good meal, My friend had trout, and she normally wouldn't order that, because she likes sea food, but she thought it was delicious . I had the short ribs and I thought it was tasty.
We especially loved the Christmas decorations and atmosphere, it made for a memorable evening
Poggio manages to stay one of the best restaurants in Marin. Everything is spot-on... the greeting at the Host's podium, the comfortable design, the competent, informed service, the selection & execution of the food, the bar & wine offerings... it simply, consistently couldn't be much better. Kudos to Larry Mindel and the staff for a truly outstanding accomplishment.
I love this place but last trip not the best. Gem lettuce salad dressing tasteless. Past pillows ok but wouldn’t order it again. On the up side, the roasted crab appetizer was very good, as was the grilled squid. Asked for a better table (under the arches), didn’t get it - mild disappointment.
Excellent lunch experience. This was our fifth dining experience (both lunch and dinner) over 10 years and Poggio never fails to please. Great location just outside the touristy section of Sausalito with easy parking options nearby. Restaurant is large, spacious and very cozy. Both indoor and outdoor sections are attractive and they have a good variety of seating options: cozy booths for 2-4 pp, French bistro style side by side seating , regular free standing tables and a very nice bar counter.
The best thing about Poggio is their excellent menu range , where pretty much everything is of a very high quality. It is genuinely hard to choose what you want because almost everything appeals. One great feature is their “Sharing Plates” section that offers really good comfort food that can be shared cost effectively if you are a small or a large party. We ordered the roasted cauliflower , which was superb , Brussels sprouts with pancetta which was also excellent , the Dungeness crab which was braised to perfection , and lamb meatballs with Italian sausage in a fresh tomato compote. Very solid. We started with a pureed cauliflower soup with a touch of oliive oil and it was fresh and very tasty.
I must add that the bread was also superb. Baked fresh on the premises and served oven hot, it was crusty whole wheat sourdough. This is the sign of a really top class restaurant and it’s increasingly rare to find fresh hot bread served at every meal in restaurants in San Francisco and Marin.
The service is very warm and friendly although at some points during lunch it was hard to flag down our waiter. But not a big deal because on other occasions service has been very prompt and attentive.
A great place for any occasion casual or formal when you are in the vicinity. In fact we enjoyed our meal so much we are going back next week !
Outstanding food, great service, honored reservation time.
We used to think Buckeye Roadhouse was the best food in Marin. Poggio is clearly better.
Decor was warm holiday, quiet and we were able to talk.
Sparkling water, brewed on site, good. Bread, fresh baked, nicely browned, served with butter.
Gem salad, and crabmeat salads very fresh tasting, lightly dressed, high quality Reggiano Parmigiano, and good mix of ingredients. With Dungeness crab season starting, crab was also fresh.
The chicken pappardelle (recommended by our waiter Ricardo) had seared chicken with I think brown butter/olive oil sauce with parmigiano and was really a nice switch from typical pasta dishes.
The restaurant has great skill in grilled dishes. Three of us shared the Portherhouse which arrived on a large wood plank, precut, exactly as ordered (medium rare)precut into bite-sized slices, and had an intense grilled and rosemary odor. The steak easily fed three. It was by far better than any steak at Buckeye or any other Marin restaurant. The chicken was also perfectly grilled. The Yukon gold potatoes were also flaky, well-flavored
We also split the broccoleti which arrived dark green, and cooked perfectly.
The dessert lemon dish was also served with a lemon mouse, meringue bits and pistachio bits. I am not a real lemon lover, but this was a good desert
Poggio is the best choice for Italian Cuisine in Marin. The setting is beautiful, the service is always on point and the food is excellent. Prices are competitive with other restaurants that can't compete with Poggio for even one aspect that Poggio excels in. It's truly a gem and parking is not bad either.
We must of hit this restaurant on a good night because we had no problem getting in at the last minute. The waiter was very attentive and the food was good. A few observations - I ordered the Black Cod and the portion was very small and both my salad and entree were over salted. The wine list is exceptional - something for everyone.
Simply the best restaurant in Marin. Food + Service + Atmosphere are all you want in a great restaurant that won't break the bank so we can go here more often :) If there is such a thing as "celebrity bartenders" in Marin then Tony and Karl are the A-list. Plus you can actually hear what your date has to say without shouting, such a nice and rare find for such a popular place. Just love the food and the vibe here. Sneaky great wine list too.
Despite having a reservation, we were keep waiting >20 min to be seated. The assigned table was next to a side door which the staff kept propping open to serve the outside seating area and it was a cold evening. The service was slow and inattentive (we had to ask for the bread, appetizers arrived before the drinks were served etc.) and the food was mediocre at best. For such a popular restaurant, we were very disappointed.
We went to Poggio the day after we got married and had the most wonderful time. Everything from being greeted by the hilarious Italian bartender and considerate hostess, to our wonderfully attentive waiter, Liver, made us feel special. The manager even sent over champagne and dessert to help us celebrate in style. Overall, a very special evening.
Sadly we were disappointed. We have had yummy hearty italian meals at Poggio but the pizza, which we were told by the server should have been crispy and thin crust ended up being thick and doughy and the cheese and toppings almost inedible. The seasonal fuyu persimmon and buffalo mozzarella salad was tasty but again lacking somehow in preparation. The Buffalo mozzarella is delicious on just about anything. But the Persimmons were distributed carelessly and I did not feel that any love or Elegance went into this dish at all. It is rare that I ever give a bad review. But this just was so unappetizing.
Nice atmosphere. Husband and I shared the carpaccio tuna appetizer and the beet salad. Both were delicious and we would recommend them. We had two different fish dishes and both were tasty and done to perfection. The lemon mousse was to die for!
We have dined at Poggio many times and often choose it for special evenings out with friends. It's one of the few stand-outs in an otherwise rather bleak dining scene in Marin. AND, if you choose one of the booths in the back, it's even quiet enough for an intimate conversation. The staff is expert, welcoming, and non-intrusive. The food is authentic rustic northern Italian. Although the menu changes with seasonal ingredients, look for one of the autumn/winter offerings: pappardelle with wild boar ragout. You will think that you are at the table of the best hidden restaurant in Tuscany.
