We have dined at Poggio many times and often choose it for special evenings out with friends. It's one of the few stand-outs in an otherwise rather bleak dining scene in Marin. AND, if you choose one of the booths in the back, it's even quiet enough for an intimate conversation. The staff is expert, welcoming, and non-intrusive. The food is authentic rustic northern Italian. Although the menu changes with seasonal ingredients, look for one of the autumn/winter offerings: pappardelle with wild boar ragout. You will think that you are at the table of the best hidden restaurant in Tuscany.
The food is delicious and special. Service is very nice. We went for our anniversary and they gave us a dessert and were very celebratory. It is expensive, definitely special occasion for us. It would be very nice if they had a bathroom in the restaurant as opposed to having to go upstairs in the hotel.
There are authentic Italian dishes comparable to being in Italy with a combination of local and specialized ingredients. The pasta dishes come in 2 sizes which is nice for smaller appetites and for those who like to eat in the traditional Italian manner with a pasta dish preceding the main meal. There seem to be quieter areas near the windows and more lively areas in the interior offering both choices. The service was very fine with a nice mix of quiet professionalism with just a few chatty comments. It is technically part of the Casa Madrona Hotel but totally separate and not like typical hotel restaurants, that is to say, it is a stand alone restaurant favored by locals as well as tourists.
Too bad the food did not match the wonderful dinning room of Poggio. While the first course soup was delicious and perfect for a cool fall night, the main course, a veal dish that featured Chanterelle mushrooms, was a big disappointment. There was a sour taste to the dish. Osso Buco which I have had many time at other restaurants is not supposed to taste sour. I wonder if the Chanterelles were past their prime? The had a slimy appearance.
The service was good from both our waiter and the other staff.
Food was great and I enjoyed the wine selection. It was our anniversary and the waiter comped our desserts. It was really a sweet gesture and completely unexpected. Turned out to just be a special night for us. It was quiet enough to have a decent conversation.
The food was quite average, absolutely nothing special. The service was marginal, the waitress was nice enough, but very inexperienced, kind of got in our face a little, e.g. made a long list of recommendations (didn't ask for it), kept wanting to take plates/glasses away when not quite done, etc.
Poggio, when it is on its game, is the best food in Sausalito. Sunday night, the restaurant was rocking and the food was stellar. We had roasted cauliflower with a Calbrian hot sauce, the flavors and textures were spot on. The chicken was juicy and cooked to perfection. My husband's ragu pasta was perfect. We also ordered a side of olive oil mashed potatoes, who needs butter? They were maybe the best mashed potatoes I have ever had (don't tell my mom).
I love the room, open, lively, and elegant. The location,across from the Sausalito Yacht Harbor is hard to beat. What is not to like about Poggio? Sure, it costs more than most places in Sausalito..but every now and then it is good to treat ourselves.
My wife and I visited for an anniversary dinner. The menu was full of things we wanted to try. We settled on an appetizer, soup, salad, 2 main pasta dishes, vegetables, and dessert. We didn’t finish all the food but really enjoyed the variety of food. The service was great and we liked the restaurant a lot. We are hoping to visit again soon!
Always great food. Service was very mediocre... perhaps as we were dressed casually? Also felt we'd been placed right next to bus stop and with families with children- though we were all adults. "Busboy" obviously was professional and excellent - who we made sure to tip separate. Overall good food, noisy lousy seating (we'd made reservations) and condescending waiter.
Anniversary dinner in the inside dining area. The sidewalk area is fun but more noisy than we wanted.
Great service throughout the evening, from drinks through dessert. I had the arugula salad with Granny Smith apples and other good ingredients. My partner had the ceasar dinner salad. Both very good. I had the carbonara which was good and my partner had the outstanding seafood with risotto in a sauce to end all seafood sauces. Great bread and perfect atmosphere for an evening out and a plan to return soon
We've been back in the Bay Area for eleven years, and have been searching for that one go-to restaurant that both my Italian wife and I love, and from our first glances at the ambience, our first exchange with our waiter, our first sips, our first smells and tastes, and all the way to our most recent trip across the bay to this fabulous restaurant (our fourth visit), we both knew for certain that yes, finally our search is over. Poggio is the one.
Had another great time at Poggio. Excellent squid, branzino, osso bucco, and crudo. Next time, I'll bone the fish myself. The waiter got all the bones, but didn't leave much fish. Had an excellent Roero Arneis with the first courses and had three 1986 CA cabs with the mains. Enough glasses were provided for each wine, and the corkage was a reasonable $20. Super to see Tony, the barista meraviglioso.
Mushroom terrine was rich and exquisite, no need for meat in this wonderful vegetation starter. We followed the terrine with a watermelon salad that was dressed to perfection and surprised the tastebuds with fresh, bright flavors. Fire-roasted cauliflower had the savory smoke flavor that we were craving. The black cod was perfection as was the chicken liver pasta.
Poggio has the feeling of a European dining experience without the flight and jet lag. I can't wait to go back to Poggio.
