Great location on small, charming Belden St. off hectic Union Sq. Staff nice. Mussels just weren’t good— way too much raw garlic, many not open. Brussels sprout hash tough and flavorless. Coming in from the drizzly weather we nearly wiped on the floor that was either greasy or soapy. Place does not look clean.

Classic French bistro style, replete with tile floor and rickety chairs. Food and service excellent and they leave you alone (good) You can linger.

It was Christmas Day. The restaurant was very busy and crowded. They were missing a server but they tried hard. Delicious liver pate and shrimp dish.

Wonderful food. Space inside is a bit of a tight squeeze so sitting outside might be better if you need more room.

Usually very good, but going during the holidays may not have been a good choice. Seems like kitchen staff may have been on vacay, with those left behind sorely lacking. The mussels were lukwarm and had little broth (as if they forgot adding the mussels broth in the sauces). Luckily, I frequent this spot and will give them another chance (sans holiday time).

Greatest seafood I had. For a long time. We enjoyed the Rockefeller Oysters and plouf mussels (what a great much of flavors). We ordered the Hawaiian butterfish and crab cakes.... It was a bit too much at the end....we can absolutely recommend that place. The service is very professional and attentive.

Had a table for 12 and service was a bit slow but was a large group so perhaps they could have used a couple of extra hands to support one server.

Food was mediocre. Drinks also ok. Service a little slow. But how much can you expect from a French place. At least it’s consistent with the French demeanor and slow and standoffish culture.

We have been coming to Plouf for years and it never disappoints. Reasonable prices for the city, and great cuisine. A little gem for casual dining.

Food tasted great; we got the Oysters Rockefeller, steak tartar, foie gras, and plouf mussels , Oysters could have been a bit warmer. Everything else was delicious.
But service was horrendous. Ordered fries with the mussels and had to ask multiple times before we finally got the fries. We had to flag down who ever we could to get our drinks refilled. We ordered the duck but were brought out fish. Both tables on either side of us were also complaining about how long everything was taking. We gave up and decided just to get our check instead of waiting around for our dinner to be remade.

We've dined many times but had not been there for quite a while. Ordered our traditional favorite moules but were disappointed. Poulet moules were so full of overcooked bacon you couldn't taste anything but salt and leathery bacon jerky. No 'poulet' flavor in the broth. Meh....

We went here for a coworker's goodbye lunch. It was a chilly day and we were happy to discover how cozy this Belden Place restaurant is inside. We got the table by the fireplace for extra ambience. The food was great and a good value, and the service was excellent (and kept the prosecco flowing!) I will say that the fireplace went from cozy to stiffling after about 30 minutes, but we still loved it. I'll definitely go back this winter for more fun work lunches.

The food was very good. My companion had the mussels and got so many in the order she couldn't finish. They were exceptional. I tried the Hawaiian Butter Fish which was also excellent! I visit San Francisco several times a year for business and would return to this restaurant. It is located in an alley with several restaurants.

Plouf was perfect for our party of ten. We loved the Mussel dishes, bread, wine, food. Service was good, not great, but good. Desserts were ok to incredible. With wine...$100 per person. Worth it-we ordered at least four bottles of very good, moderately priced wine. Very hard to find the place-not a street, but a well lit alley.

Bad service and smelly food. I asked for unsweetened drink but got sweetened. I asked again but was again given a wrong drink. I ordered mussels but it arrived smelly and did not taste fresh. Waiter only visited to deliver food but never came back to ask how the food was. I had to call him to get the bill.

Excellent quality and very authentic French food. There is an outdoor tent/patio area to sit if you like or you can sit inside. There is a little bit of a "Irish sports bar" type feel inside with televisions tuned into sport channels and an old wooden bar and dark wood interiors, so it's more on the casual/neighborhood bar looking side. There were families with several children which added to the "family/neighborhood" type feel. Service was terse/efficient, not exactly friendly but not at all rude. Not sure this was as fancy as we were anticipating but it was really pretty good food - not a single sour note at all, and all flavors were exceptionally balanced and coordinated. There are not many places in town where you can get real French dishes like coq au vin or poire belle helene. We spent about $100 for 2 people with appetizers, sides and drinks although we regretfully skipped the exciting looking French desserts. The mussels with mariniere sauce were excellent - but you should like garlic as it is basically a butter sauce with garlic - we really liked it and the broth was good enough to drink on its own. The asparagus was also cooked very nicely. Steak was good, cooked exactly as we asked with very nice mashed potatoes. In fact all of the food was excellent although maybe not supremely memorable or outstanding but then again, the prices here are very moderate and there was not a single bad or even slightly mediocre thing brought to the table. I would definitely come back here for a casual authentic French dinner. It is not necessarily the top of the line but they offer very authentic French food for moderate prices and you don't need to dress up and you cannot go wrong with anything on the menu.

The place is nice but since it was a slow night, they closed the terrace and we ended alone inside. No atmosphere! Wine was too warm but food was good. Exellent service from waiteress. We had to leave, all chairs where already piled on top of tables...disapointing for a saturday night.

Usually Plouf is very good. Haven't been there in a while and when I returned a last week I felt the food had way too much garlic. I had the Butterfish and was bloated and got sick from it. Maybe a one time thing. But if you do not like garlic this place is not for you.

It was a holiday evening. Plouf was the only restaurant opened on Borden Place. They were very short on help. Lamb chops were ordered medium rare, came out well done. Butter fish usually moist and flakey, mine was firm and dry. Very disappointed. The saving grace was the mussels. And they charge for bread!!!!! They charge enough for their entrees to cover the cost of bread. I know, I owned a restaurant for 15 years.

Good food. Everything was cooked spot on. Service was slow but that was because they seemed to be under staffed. Not sure if that is normal or due to the Labor Day Sunday. Odd t hat they charge for bread especially since you almost have to have it to soak up the broth in the mussels.

By far and away the best food on our trip. We had soup, salad, oysters, and fish/chips. Each plate was fresh, unique and delicious. Going to try and eat here again. The food came extraordinarily quick also.

Plouf is always a great time! It was a girls night out for my friend and I and we stuck to the tasting price fixe menu. The starter baby lettuce salad was very fresh and the vinaigrette dressing tasted so light and flavorful. It was a perfect compliment to the glazed nuts and sprinkling of goat cheese. It was also the perfect starter for the main course: mussels. They were delicious; not too big and in a variety of very flavorful broths. My friend had the Plouf signature broth which was a little spicy and I had the traditional mussels meuniere. Both were delicious. We both finished with the cheese plate and some port. The service was terrific and the place was full.

Standards have slipped at this once-great restaurant. Only a few fish recipes remain on the menu, and those that still do, are mediocre. We had the special (Butterfish), and the Bouillabaisse: both were underseasoned and neither was memorable.

There wasn't anything incredibly terrible about Plouf, but it just wasn't worth the price point. The mashed potato was bland and steak was over-cooked (we actually weren't asked what we preferred). Fries didn't have much seasoning and my friends' crab cakes dish looked small enough for me to refuse a taste 'cause I felt bad. However the garlic bread and Plouf mussels/broth were the exception that night. I might go back just for those.
