What Insiders Are Saying
Plouf has great French food down an alley that's worth heading to FiDi for.
This is a solid restaurant. Beldon Place is an excellent location. The food is
We had a fabulous graduation-dinner at Plouf. The only thing my daughter had requested for the meal was, "Mussels, Ma; you know I love mussels." I'm so glad we found Plouf! Ordering a variety of dishes w the intent to share is a great idea for this place. Also, the fixed price menu is a deal if you like clam chowder and mussels so I'll probably do that next time as at least one set of items. (Dinner for 7 was about $600.) Plouf is now at the top of our list of places to enjoy when downtown.
The little alley it is on is charming in a European kind of way. Park at St. Mary's parking lot on Kearny by Pine--close and cheap. The restaurant itself is sort of industrial shabby-chic, not at all the "stuffy" kind of white table cloth French place. You'd be as comfortable there in jeans, work attire, or a date night sexy dress! We went on a Wednesday night reserving a table of 10 a week or two prior; they were very accommodating of our last minute change in numbers to 7 (Unfortunately, I couldn't get the OpenTable app to change it).
The drinks to start the night were totally yummy; especially the Plouf martini. The food was superlative. We had a number of appetizers and especially enjoyed the octopus salad which was so good (simply grilled-- considerably more tender than most I've eaten) we ordered another. The clam chowder was the best our friend said he ever had. We had 4 flavors of mussels, all delicious, and the mussels large, soft and juicy. (I took the coconut broth home and had it w udon noodles the next night.) I asked for the tuna prepared with the mushroom sauce, in the way the salmon was listed on the menu, which they accommodated-- it was fabulous! We had three of the main desserts which was more than enough for 7 to share: creme brulee (large), chocolate-espresso mousse (very dark, not too sweet, really great), and a poached pear extravaganza that was huge with a fun presentation.
Do keep up communication w the staff otherwise they are hands off mellow.
Excellent and prompt servive. Pleasant environment and delicious food. I had the Plouf mussels which were excellent.would come again.
Ordered Plouf mussels. Decadent and delicious. Highly recommend
Best muscles in SF. Good service, great location, friendly wait staff.
Fabulous food! We had mussels 3 ways. All were delicious, but our favorite were the Poulette. The salmon was excellent as was the bouillabaisse which was loaded with seafood. Service was excellent too. Definitely a must when in San Francisco!
Clam chowder was different than we've ever had before and it was the best we've ever had and there was lots of it. The mussels were good and again, the serving was very generous, but not enough bread accompanied it. However, when we asked for more, it was promptly supplied. They no longer had the carpaccio listed on their website menu, so we ordered the beef tartar which was a great disappointment. It was very coarsely chopped instead of it being finely chopped and the flavor was very bland.
I was only disappointed because per the website and an outside sign there was supposed to have Happy Hour on Sat 2:30 and the restaurant was closed. Then we went back because YELP said they have the best oyster rockefleller. We order and he states they only served oyster rockefeller in the winter!!??! Why?! This is in SF!?! So on that note disappointed. But the food was darn right yummy so they slightly made up for the other two issues we encountered.
No wild fish
Was a big dissapointment
I would not recommend it
reservation made for outside table. Waiter never checked the reservation and led us to table at very back of restaurant, and was annoyed when we then asked to be seated outside. Waiter placed us at a table where the floor was at a significant angle and was uncomfortable to sit at. Would not combine other table to accommodate the 6 of us. Gave us the choice of going back inside on a warm sunny day.
On a recent Saturday night at 7:30, the place was nearly dead. Despite this, the service we received was inattentive and indifferent. I asked for a glass of wine and the server brought me water in a wine glass. Unfortunately, I’m unable to turn water into wine. Grilled salmon was good, however, as is the French martini. But Plouf has no pulse anymore, which I’ve noticed on the last several visits.
The mussels were exquisite as well as the crab cakes. A great meal and lots of ambiance dining outside.
Excellent food and ambiance. Service was prompt but less attentive than one would expect (no refills on ice tea, no "check-in" to see if we needed anything). Pricing a tad high, but overall quality outstanding.
Plouf is reliably good. I’ve enjoyed it for years. The prefix menu has the best dishes - baby lettuce salad, your choice of mussels and a choice of dessert. I’d love to have the salad dressing recipe.
Great food , great place to hang out , good wine selection , will dine again soon
This was a lunch and as always lunch is super solid. The food was excellent and prices reasonable. Only regret was not asking for Bouillabaisse (Cioppino).
Hella good! One of the staff is hot 🔥🔥
We had a late lunch and nearly had the place to ourselves. I had not been in years but Plouf has aged well.
I met a business associate at Plouf this week for dinner - and I picked this spot because it's close to one of the SF BART stations. He was coming into the City from the East Bay at 6pm, so BART was better than driving and it was easy for him to get to and find this gem of a restaurant in an alley just off Montgomery and Bush Streets. About half of the seating is in a heated tent over the alley, so you have semi-outside or indoor available. I arrived early and picked a table inside by the fireplace and asked my waitress if she could help me recharge my iPhone, which she gladly did right away. When my associate arrived, we picked several smaller plates vs. an entrée and had fun with their delicious flavors and very creative dishes. Plus, our delightful waitress talked the bartender into adding a cucumber (from the kitchen, so it was a task) to our Hendrick's martinis. Now that's service! Love this place!
I think that maybe all the alcohol wasn’t cooked out of the broth for the mussels, but the duck was very well prepared.
Excellent mussels and quick service. Hjhhjhhhjjjsbhdbdbdndnd
Specializing in mussels but with a diverse menu. Excellent drink choices .
So consistently good. Very French which is quite refreshing.
Really liked the French vibe that the restaurant puts on. And the food was amazing! We did the special Valentines 3 course meal. I really liked my salmon with the risotto, very tasty and I loved how the thickness of the risotto went well with the salmon. My wife had the bouillabaisse and it was quite seafoody, which she really loved. I also loved the pomme frites with truffle sauce and cheese and the mussles, which were delightful! We will definitely come back.
The bouillabaisse was outstanding. The creme brulee and the profiteroles were too.
Kudos for the staff, efficient and friendly. I enjoyed my mushroom stuffed ravioli, but the staff could up the caesar salad, whole lettuce leaves on a plate covered with so so dressing.
The good... customer service was great from the host to the server; the server was very attentive. The ambiance is really cute, I really appreciated the fire place. The bad... many people raved about the clam chowder, so I was really looking forward to it... the flavor was good, but it was really watery. The plouf mussels were a miss. Some mussels were closed/dead and a lot had a fishy taste. I couldn't finish it. The mushroom ravioli was good, wish it was more than 4 pieces.
Plouf provides great French bistro food, the owner and his family are terrific and we've been going there for many years. great place to take out of town guests as well.
You feel like being in Paris.
Just a gem!
Just okay...most of the meal was overly salty, but no seasoning in the calamari batter- blah. Might be good hangout after work but food is just meh.
Haven’t been to Plouf in years so it was a treat to go back. Unfortunately we only get an hour for lunch and the slow service was for people with a lot more time. But having said that the food was wonderful, outstanding even. Next time we’ll just have to schedule more time for our meal. Definitely going back.
Always the best mussels, and great French fries! And really fun atmosphere. Nice and ‘quiet’ on a rainy night!
If you love Mussels, this is the place. We really enjoyed them and ate them ALL. I ordered the Coq Au Vin and it was ok. (I think I had envisioned a more bite-sized stew, rather than bulky portions served.) The steak frites plates was very tasty - especially when you're in the mood for steak.
Mussels and frites at my go-to. Definitely recommend!
The service was great although they are stingy with the bread so we had to request more several times. The was fair- good. The appetizers and desserts were better than the mains.
The food is so overpriced for what it's worth. The liver patte and cheese plates were too salty and the other food we ordered wasn't that good. The only thing I thought was really good was their desserts. I went on Christmas, so it was fully packed and the wait for the food was at least 30 minutes. The service was also not attentive. We sat right in front of the waiter booth, and even then, we'd have to get his attention for the dessert menu and check. They weren't observant or attentive at all. Don't go here. It's not worth the money...
I was a little disappointed in the lamb chops. They were tasty and cooked as I had ordered, but it was difficult for some reason to cut the meat off the bone. I had to ask for a steak knife, and still had a problem. Ended up picking it up in my hands and gnawing on the bone. I probably should have opted for a fish dish, which seems to be more their specialty. I will say the serving was generous and the accompaniments were very good.
I typically go to Cafe Bastille, next door, but like to eat at Plouf occasionally. They have a more upscale menu and great deserts.
Our Christmas dinner was nice and although they were busy, I felt like the service was good and the food arrived hot to our table.
Their outdoor seating is fully enclosed with heat lamps and I enjoyed my meal with family.
Food was fabulous. Wonderful selections - waiter was very helpful in our selection of wine and food. Could not have asked for more - this was a great experience with great food!
Has been better. Server was annoyed with questions and the chairs are uncomfortably high off the ground and I am not a short person. Will return for the mussels always, but wish the experience as whole was more comfortable..
Food was no bueno! Portions small. Hadn't been back for years so we thought we would give it a try for something different. So sorry we did.
