The place we always go for mussels! Amazing French food, atmosphere and great service. Magnifique!
Ambiance was great as we were next to a fireplace on a chilly evening. Food and service were top noch. We were still talking about the dining experience a couple days after we had dinner there. A very memorable experience.
What a treasure we found! We had a group of 10 booked that day on a 3-day weekend. They accommodated us and the food was great! Those who got cesar salads said they were the best they ever had. Clam chowder is very thin but good, more like a broth. Plouf mussels were the best I've ever eaten. We came hungry and they are a little stingy on bread, giving one baguette sliced maybe 6 inches long at a time. Overall, delicious food!
The food was great we had the Plouf mussels and beef tartar (ask for the Baguette on the side) for main courses we had the butter fish and ribeye steak very good. Our favorites was definitely the mussels, and for dessert we had sorbet and creme brûlée.
Nice restaurant but should have mentioned it was a fixed menu. So expensive!
Our waiter was a very rude french man, but the food was really good! But wow, we were shocked by how rude he was.
love this place - ambient is great.
love SF beiden lane - it was my hood.
Amazing mussels, as always. Their beef tartar was also great.
We came for the restaurant week deal, but I woudln't go back and pay full price. The food was good, but overpriced. If you go, get the coq au vin and muscles but anything else isn't worth the large price tag. The restaurant was surprisingly empty for a Friday night but maybe it was just an off night. A little overpriced (they charged $2 for a small amount of table bread.... what?!), but felt authentic.
We went for Restaurant Week. They offered two different entrees: ahi tuna or rack of lamb. Both were excellent. Staff very attentive.
I liked it so much, thus was my second time there within days.
I definitely would recommend it.
My wife and I shared the following
- Clam chowder (very good...not creamy and loaded with fresh clams!)
- Beet salad (the best!)
- Mussels in a light cream sauce (good, but not hot)
- House cured salmon gravlax with dill. (OK, but not an entree)
That being said, the wait service was overwhelmed with a Friday lunch crowd, so water service was non-existent and the waitress did not circle back to check on us.
We’ve been to Plouf about 6-8 times over the past 10 years., but this has been the unfortunate poorest the food and service has been. It may be time for Plouf to hang it up.
Belgian specialties in many different varieties served in piping hot cauldrons of deliciousness.
Incredible crab cakes starter, steak tartare
The only disappoint was the garlic bread.
Great location on small, charming Belden St. off hectic Union Sq. Staff nice. Mussels just weren’t good— way too much raw garlic, many not open. Brussels sprout hash tough and flavorless. Coming in from the drizzly weather we nearly wiped on the floor that was either greasy or soapy. Place does not look clean.
Classic French bistro style, replete with tile floor and rickety chairs. Food and service excellent and they leave you alone (good) You can linger.
The dinner and service was great! Everyone was very happy and will return again soon.
I booked a table for today at 8:00 pm and got seated 8:35
Terrible food. Very expensive. Spicy. A messy restaurant.
It was Christmas Day. The restaurant was very busy and crowded. They were missing a server but they tried hard. Delicious liver pate and shrimp dish.
Wonderful food. Space inside is a bit of a tight squeeze so sitting outside might be better if you need more room.
Very nice place, a bit hard to find. Excellent service
Very good authentic selection, great French ambience
Usually very good, but going during the holidays may not have been a good choice. Seems like kitchen staff may have been on vacay, with those left behind sorely lacking. The mussels were lukwarm and had little broth (as if they forgot adding the mussels broth in the sauces). Luckily, I frequent this spot and will give them another chance (sans holiday time).
Friendly service, good selection of food, bouillabaisse was outstanding
Yum! Deelicious onion soup...exquisite mussels..such a wonderful place to meet friends while shopping...just perfect...thanks Plouf!
Greatest seafood I had. For a long time. We enjoyed the Rockefeller Oysters and plouf mussels (what a great much of flavors). We ordered the Hawaiian butterfish and crab cakes.... It was a bit too much at the end....we can absolutely recommend that place. The service is very professional and attentive.
Had a table for 12 and service was a bit slow but was a large group so perhaps they could have used a couple of extra hands to support one server.
Food was mediocre. Drinks also ok. Service a little slow. But how much can you expect from a French place. At least it’s consistent with the French demeanor and slow and standoffish culture.
We have been coming to Plouf for years and it never disappoints. Reasonable prices for the city, and great cuisine. A little gem for casual dining.
Food tasted great; we got the Oysters Rockefeller, steak tartar, foie gras, and plouf mussels , Oysters could have been a bit warmer. Everything else was delicious.
But service was horrendous. Ordered fries with the mussels and had to ask multiple times before we finally got the fries. We had to flag down who ever we could to get our drinks refilled. We ordered the duck but were brought out fish. Both tables on either side of us were also complaining about how long everything was taking. We gave up and decided just to get our check instead of waiting around for our dinner to be remade.
We've dined many times but had not been there for quite a while. Ordered our traditional favorite moules but were disappointed. Poulet moules were so full of overcooked bacon you couldn't taste anything but salt and leathery bacon jerky. No 'poulet' flavor in the broth. Meh....
We went here for a coworker's goodbye lunch. It was a chilly day and we were happy to discover how cozy this Belden Place restaurant is inside. We got the table by the fireplace for extra ambience. The food was great and a good value, and the service was excellent (and kept the prosecco flowing!) I will say that the fireplace went from cozy to stiffling after about 30 minutes, but we still loved it. I'll definitely go back this winter for more fun work lunches.
The food was very good. My companion had the mussels and got so many in the order she couldn't finish. They were exceptional. I tried the Hawaiian Butter Fish which was also excellent! I visit San Francisco several times a year for business and would return to this restaurant. It is located in an alley with several restaurants.
