We are a family owned business located in the centre of York by the River Ouse. Our bar and bistro has gained a reputation for a wide range of beers and spirits coupled with an excellent selection of wines and champagnes. Close to The Grand Opera House and city centre, Plonkers is an ideal place to meet with friends or colleagues for a relaxed drink.
Weekends at Plonkers can have a party atmosphere where you can relax after work with friends. Upstairs seats approximately 26 but we can cater for buffets for around 40 people with some standing.
We now have our outside riverside area, where we serve food and drinks 10am – 9pm weather permitting.

Please note that although Open Table appears to let you book downstairs or upstairs, this is a glitch with open table, and whilst we will do our best to accommodate requests, no specific tables can be booked as its down to phasing on the day,

The outside tables need updating. I realise the floor is not flat but the tables are old.

Always greeted by friendly staff with a smile. Food is fabulous, cooked to order and worth the wait. We look forward to their home made steak and ale pie, or the chicken hanging kebab.... both have such tender meat, succulent, ..].. menu has some great choices Seating is set out great. Id deffo prebook if there are more than 4 of you so they will rearrange tables to accommodate you all together. Great choice of "drinks" at bars ( large bar downstairs and a smaller one upstairs) Lovely atmosphere, a very "old" pub with seating area down on the banks of the river to enjoy a drink outside in the sun. Only thing to be aware of is that if you have limited mobility, the toilets are up stairs. However there are banisters on either side. We go here about 6 times a year as its perfect for a pre show drink and meal. ( and if you do need a loo on a lower level The Grand Opera House opens at 7 so you can then use theirs, if you have tickets!) A couple of stone steps going down into the building from the street. The building has lots of character. Its flooded many times and there are brass plaques on the walls showing the level the flood waters rose to in its past. Its amazing how well everyone pulls together when York floods. Its an ideal place to grab a pre show meal and drink, or even pop in just for a coffee. Super friendly staff...... I have 4 shows booked in at the Grand Opera House, and i book a table for all of them as on a theatre night it does get very busy. 10/10 from us!

My wife and I enjoyed a nice pre show meal and after show drinks on Thursday 8 May 2025. Served by a very pleasant young lady. Thankyou.

Found by pure chance while preparing for a day trip to York and it did not disappoint li Ely atmosphere staff were helpful and food was amazing

We came here for Sunday lunch which didn’t disappoint- the best Yorkshire puddings in York! The kids both had the steak which they thoroughly enjoyed! Brilliant service would highly recommend

Lovely meal and friendly service. Only downside was we were all a little cold as our table was near the door. It was perfect for a party of 5 though! And the food and wine warmed us up! The menu was totally different from what was expected from online menu, which was a bit disappointing ,but we all managed to pick something we liked in the end.

Lovely place, good food. Wine possibly overpriced, but nice. Very handy to Grand Opera House, which was our next stop.
