Plaza III, The Steakhouse - Kansas City Ratings and Reviews
Made reservations expecting to enjoy Jazz and a good meal. Drove from Wichita KS to Kansas City only to find out that the jazz club was sold out to a private party without any notification, or blockage from the website. The hostess that checked us in was so inexperienced, sent us to the club anyway even though it was unavailable. We were then seated at a table directly next to kitchen exit. The noise and activity was horrible. The service was very slow, however they were busy. The response from management to all of this was pretty much a so what. I really expected better based on prior reviews. This place is a one-and-done.
Food was excellent, service could have been better - not what we expected for the price. I had an open table reservation with a confirmation number but the restaurant did not have it in their system. Luckily it was an early 5:00 reservation so it was not an issue but that was concerning.
We had a less then amazing experience recently at Plaza III. Our food was really good, but the service was a joke. First it took the waiter over 15 minutes to even approach our table. Once he did we have him our full order. Our drinks never showed up and we had to finally flag down our waiter 30 Minutes later...and he acknowledged he forgot them. The main dish finally made its way out and was tasty, but it was ruined by the wait. We thought about desert, but just wanted out of there.
I think our waiter was new. The time between ordering drinks, appetizers and mains was too extended. Cocktail orders were not completed as a group and as we were toasting our daughter, we realized 3 people didn't have their wine orders yet.
That being said, Plaza III is an iconic KC steakhouse and we will continue to dine there.
The steaks were not worth the price. My husband’s was tough and my fillet was dry and tasteless. The wine was horrible. The wait staff, however, were very nice and tried to be accomidating about the wine but by the third try I realized it wasn’t going to get any better. We went away feeling like we spent way too much money for a sub par meal.
Was in Kansas City last night on business and tried "Plaza 3". They've been in business 55 years and apparently are iconic in the steakhouse genre in Kansas City.
We were brought complimentary raw cut veggies (carrot/celery/radish) and homemade ranch while selecting food/wine. Started off with Caesar salads that had a really nicely garlicy & tart Caesar dressing.....AND they lavished on the anchovies at our request.
Fantastic animal proteins for the Entree round. My colleague had rack of lamb with beautiful Popsicle-style prepped ribs. Grilled to perfection. I had surf and turf with a petite filet mignon accompanied by a pair of crab cakes. Filet was perfect, charring on the exterior, vibrant pink inside. Crab cakes were savory, lots of crab, with a nice remoulade type topping.
For sides we did grilled asparagus, which was okay but not amazing. Also chose a starch and did potatoes au gratin which was really nice. Plenty of sharp white cheese and baked with some nice crispness to the top. Complimentary bread was decent but not smack your mother good.
Washed all this down with one of the best bottles of Chianti I've ever had. Smooth start, oakey in the middle, velvet on the back end. I apologize for forgetting the name. But excellent Chiantis are not unicorns so you should be able to find one too.
Nice dining room, great downtown location, super service, really good meal, especially the animal proteins. Put it on your list when in KC.
Probably the BEST Kansas City Strip that I have had! Makes many other area steak houses seem awful. Pricy, but well worth it! I would rather pay a little more for outstanding quality then pay a lot for mediocre. Our server David was also fantastic with great recommendations and outstanding service!
Had Thanksgiving Dinner. Food was good, presentation was VG, service was excellent.
Had a minor problem with a foreign object in the dinner, waitress took it to the manager and chef and they handled it, no problems.
Due to the number of dinners for Thanksgiving, the hostess(s) seemed a little rattled and confused by it all but they persevered and took care of everyone.
I will give Plaza III a bit of a pass since it was Thanksgiving, but I won’t go back. First, the booth was filthy from the previous guests children. Unfortunately we didn’t realize it until my husband got up to use the restroom. The seat and legs of his pants were sticky with potatoes/gravy and who knows what else. He tried to clean them off in the restroom but they have now gone to cleaners. Waitress didn’t do anything but wipe the seat and say oops oh well. It happens. She then forgot to bring our vegetable appetizer. We had to ask another waiter. Food was just ok. Salad was good, dressing skimpy serving, potatoes ok, cranberries good, pie good. Our water glasses were empty for a while and had to ask for refills. Won’t go back-other options available on Plaza who will gladly take my $$. Very disappointed in booth fiasco.
We wen for Thanksgiving and it was awful. We waited an hour past our reservation time to be seated. Once we were seated we waited 30 minutes before anyone came to our table to even take a drink order. A waiter only came to the table AFTER I went and asked the hostess who was supposed to be helping us. The bartender kept putting water in the expensive bourbon that was ordered on the rocks. The mashed potatoes were cold and flavorless. I did order a prime rib and they at least got that right. We will never return to this place again. Especially when the bill was $180 and our service was worse than going to Wagfle House.
We went to Plaza III on recommendation from our bartender of the hotel we were staying at and we were so happy that we did. It was a great experience to celebrate our anniversary. I won’t say the steak was the best I’ve ever had, but they suggested the KC strip and we went off path with the filet, so if we had gone with their recommendation it may have had more flavor! The crab legs were excellent and the wine selection was amazing. The portions were great, they recommend sharing the sides and I would agree! This would be a wonderful spot for a business dinner.
Our server was great but the GM, Carolina, was wonderfully accommodating and welcoming. We also heard there was live music available on the lower level, but there was a private party there the night we attended so we did not get to experience it. Although I’d love to go back for that!
Recommended for special occasions or business dinners.
The prices were a bit high and the steaks were not as tender and extraordinary as I expected. In fact, my steak, a KC strip, supposedly prime grade, was a bit tough and gristly. The appetizers and service were both excellent and the restaurant was pleasantly quiet, so it was easy to visit. Overrall, it was a nice but expensive dining experience.
I was transferred from Kansas City to Arizona a little over 10 years ago. My wife and I moved back to Kansas City earlier this year. Since we hadn't been to the Plaza III in over a decade, we made reservation for my birthday. The dinner brought back pleasant memories of the past. The service and food was excellent. We are happy to be back in KC and are looking forward to future Plaza and Plaza III outings.
degraded food quality since last visit several years ago. steaks were cooked well enough but lacked expected flavor of that cut of meat, sides were mediocre. The reataurant lobby also smelled strongly of sewer gas, which also set poor expectations upon entry. over priced for what you get. many other options in the city at same cost with superior quality available. will not be returning until significant improvement in the food.
