Plates Ratings and Reviews
As usual another fine meal. Plates is so good, we hardly ever leave Larchmont to eat great food. We tried another flat bread since we had 4 people, so good. The trout has a wonderful new preparation. Matt made it just as we requested - no salt. When a dish came with not mentioned balsamic vinegar to our allergic friend. No problem immediately exchanged.
Valentines special was one league below Plates magic. Maybe because we were among the last table, but all the magic was gone. Tasteless meat, cheap desert. Desappointed about the lack of sophistication. I recommended the place for Feb 14 to friends, fortunately nobody showed up...
Overbooked on Valentine's Day, forced into taking table adjacent to front door which was constantly opening and allowing cold air in. Tiny circular table was barely big enough to fit our drinks much less our dinner. The tables were basically on top of each other. Extremely uncomfortable and tight, it was like trying to eat dinner in a phone booth. Each time the waiter went by my date had to move her chair because there wasn't enough space for him to get by otherwise. Terrible experience.
We went on Valentines Day, which was a mistake. To capitalize of the occasion, they crammed in extra tables in a already-small venue, had a limited special menu and added on inexperienced staff. In an attempt to service the unusually large crowd, the food was mediocre at best and the service was abysmal. It appeared that one person was taking orders at a large number of tables and, from that point, the table was serviced by runners and busboys. Trying to find someone to replenish drink orders was nearly impossible and, once that was accomplished, the wait to actually get the drinks was interminable. Overall, it was an extremely disappointing experience.
My husband and I have been going to Plates for years - it was our go-to date night spot. We were there on Saturday and the vibe felt off from the moment we were brought to our table:
-The greeter/seater asked us what kind of water we wanted before we even sat down
-There was a baby crying for half the meal - I am not one for no kids, but for these prices, I would have expected better
-I asked for my salmon to be cooked well - explaining that I know that is usually not the Chef's choice. Well I was right and the salmon came as I guess how the chef wanted to prepare it because it wasn't well done, at all.
-I asked for vanilla ice cream with the donuts and it came with the cinnamon. This is the second time this happened to me with this dessert. If it is not possible to make changes, the waiter should have said.
Overall, very disappointing and my husband and I left feeling like we may need to find a new date night spot.
I must have drove past "Plates" a thousand times and each time I said to myself, "I gotta try that place." Well, it was time and the dinner couldn't be more perfect. Everything was perfect from the moment we walked in late for our reservation, (we called), right through to the goodbyes .
Try the mini-taco's, expensive, but worth it. I will be going back again, soon.
Second time eating here. First time I loved our meal. Had numerous issues in our meal this time around. Made clear we didn't want a blue type cheese and we received one - which I didn't realize until I bit into it. Tuna I ordered was not spicey at all despite the menu suggesting such. My friend had to send her scallops meal back. Overall disappointing as we liked this placed prior. Waitor was nice but certainly didn't go above to try to resolve.
We were very disappointed with our dinner at Plates. The food lacked any flavor. I ordered the ricotta with truffled honey crostini and it was tasteless. The fried chicken and skirt steak were also average. The food was also served luke warm. We expected much more for the amount we spent. The restaurant also appeared dirty, menus had food and stains on them, crumbs all over the floor and seats. We won’t be returning.
We had the swordfish and scallop entrees, and the ground lamb, and apple salad, fresh oysters, and mushroom crostini for appetizers, plus one "larchmonster" for desert. All were excellent - interesting and tasty. Our only complaint was a full glass of red wine being poured for our young-looking 13 year old guest.
The food was superb. My friend had the duck comfit and I had the local bass (from the specials menu) and we both had the mushroom crostini from the specials. All were amazing. The service, though, was odd. It was much too hard to get our server's attention! When she was finally "captured," she was friendly and enthusiastic. But otherwise she was spending so much time at other tables, laughing and talking, that one could guess they were perhaps old friends of hers. But it was quite frustrating!
The food was good but I was a bit disappointed. Preppies experiences have been excellent. Tonight my friends appetizer came out cold and soggy. Then my swordfish and risotto was cold as was my friends Reuben. And the servers auctioned off the food which is a big no no in my opinion. But once the food was served at the correct temp, it was all delicious.
This was my first time here, special birthday occasion. A weekday night, but night before Thanksgiving, so many people I suspect did not want to cook that night. No parking spaces left in their lot, but street parking available. Nosy with kids up until 7:30 then it cleared out. This place has a wide range of food available from burgers & pizza to fancy stuff. Loved their deviled eggs appetizer! If you ever want real FRIED chicken, this is the place to go. Daily special is a good deal. I had a dessert that was like homemade "Ring Ding" !
This is a hard review to write because there was one dish that was terrible but all the others were excellent! Great fried chicken, great salads, great burgers, great dessert. The atmosphere is very homey and comfortable, the service was excellent. When I told the waitress that my pasta dish wasn't good (it was a special on the restaurant week menu), another waiter came over and they insisted that I get something else. I did! And it was great. I would absolutely return and recommend Plates. However, I am still quite puzzled as to how the pasta dish came to be. This was our second time there and we loved our first meal there. Maybe restaurant week creates some problems...Who knows?
Food was excellent, but very very disappointed in the service. Bar tender was awful - ignored us for 5 - 10 minutes before taking our order. Table service was not good either, there is a difference between letting a patron enjoy the atmosphere and ignoring them - tonight they ignored our table for long stretches at a time - we had to get up and remind the waiter to fill water glasses multiple times. Finally, starting up the vacuuming of the restaurant at 11pm is just awful while we were still finishing our evening. We will definitely not coming back for some time.
The kitchen is always out of the pastrami reuben for some b.s. reason or another. So if thats what you're craving, you may want to call first to see if they have it before you waste your time. I felt like it was the bartenders first day. I shouldn't have to sit it his clutter. No silverware when food was served. I got a placemat with my entree. Thanks! Its especially frustrating that the food runners run the food to the backbar instead of the customer. We literally watched our food get cold while waiting for the bartender to serve it. The food is always the savior when it comes to Plates. The oysters and happy hour are the best. Hands down.
We were celebrating our anniversary (a few weeks late because of circumstances) and had a wonderful time. For appetizers, we had the raw oysters and the raw salmon dish, both excellent, and for the main course we both had the swordfish dish, which was superb.
My family went recently for brunch and were very disappointed. The food was average but the prices were way too high. For a twelve dollar order of pancakes, you got ONE medium sized pancake. Ridiculous. Also when they offered chocolate chip or blueberry pancakes my mother in law asked if she could have a "mix", assuming she would be getting more than one. However, she got one pancake with both blueberries and chocolate chips in it...not a good combination.
