Our second visit, all was great but their menu is kinda small, so not sure we will be back.
A beautiful, comfortable experience. Delicious and gorgeous food with super friendly service. Dinner portions were a great size. Also someone please give me the wallpaper in the back room please kthanks.
Perfect early dinner after 2018 first Ring Cycle climatic Gotterdammerung at SF Opera. Plaj was filled with Ring devotees from near and far. It is part of the very nearby Inn at the Opera We arrived early for 7:15 reservation and had pleasant time at the bar talking to a person who would be hearing The Ring for the first time during Cycle 2. Sophisticated Scandinavian cuisine. Had a hard time choosing from the appealing choices. Liked the appetizers and halibut entree. Each dish was carefully and artistically presented. Would eagerly order the foie gras, herring, potato rosti again. The Swedish pancake with strawberries and scented cream was a nice ending. Good wine list. Highly Recommend.
Very pricey. I like food with more vibrant flavor, and this was more bland.
We wereup for the SF Opera for the week, and ate there twice out of the 7 days we were there, both times terrific, goodservice, interesting menu - my husband had a lamb shankbone he raved about and he is not a foody, but our grandson is, and on the second time we ate there, our grandson who is working up in the Bay area came to visit with us, as did our niece, ages 21 and 29 and BOTH loved it! An excellent restaurant!
Delicious food. We enjoyed the Swedish meatballs and the herrings.
We totally enjoy everything about this place from the warm homemade bread to the excellent food and wine and service. They are just too efficient to give us the time to savor their great offerings!
The food was tremendous -- creative, fresh, flavorful. I couldn't stop talking about it while we were eating, and I can't wait to go back.
We had dinner with two friends before heading off to Siegfried at the SF Opera, which is just half a block away. Symphony Garage offers convenient parking to Opera and Symphony - just cut through garage to come out almost next to Plaj.
Veal Cheeks were very tender and flavorful - Beet-Sured Gravlax with Sea Foam was excellent - Sea Foam (which was slightly chilled) was an unusual and interesting complement to the gravlax flavors. Generous amount of gravlax in dish. Didn't have time to have dessert - early start to a Wagner night!
In general while we used to make Jardiniere our opera regular of late we are much more likely to go to Plaj, Monsieur Benjamin or Chez Maman these days as we feel Jardiniere has fallen off a bit over the last few years in terms of menu breadth and selections.
This restaurant is one of our favorite pre-opera/symphony places. We park in Symphony Garage and walk through the garage east and come out right next to Plaj. After dinner it's just a brief walk to the Opera carriage-side entrance or to Symphony.
Relatively quiet ambience, good food, reasonable prices for what you get. Artichoke soup yesterday was excellent. Swedish meatballs are a far cry from Ikea - really well done. Most dishes are well-crafted and very flavorful.
Definitely a solid, reliable choice.
My wife and I ate at Plaj before a concert at Herbst Theater. The room has the casual elegance one would hope for in a Scandinavian themed restaurant. The service was excellent and the menu featured inspired updates on traditional Scandinavian dishes such as gravlax. The flavors and seasonings were just distinctive enough to give a sense of discovery to each dish without being self-conscious. A very pleasant experience overall and extremely convenient to Culture Gulch venues.
Lovely!! Fantastic food and service; the strawberry crepe at the end was my favorite!
Great restaurant. Interesting cuisine. Convenient to theaters.
The food was very good and quite original. Everything from bread to appetizers to mains was scrumptious and had very nice design. The atmosphere is intimate but a little bougie. There aren't that many Scandinavian restaurants in SF so Plaj is definitely a must visit if you're craving some Swedish meatballs and some very original plates
Great food and service . I wish I had this restaurant where I live. I would go back for sure.
Small pleasant place to eat. Hard to carry on conversations with tables so close together.
This restaurant is an absolute delight. The creativity of the menu is surpassed only by the execution of delicious dishes. We always enjoy eating here.
A little expensive but great evening of dinner and symphony!
I've been many times and took an out of town relative for our last dinner together. We appreciated the casual yet elegant ambience and the unusual menu items such as elk and cloudberries. The herring was fabulous as always as was the fois gras
I really enjoyed this restaurant... completely different flavors... love the place and the art of plating... everything was excellent...
PLÄJ is a great restaurant with Scandinavian fare. The food is sumptuously delicious, service excellent, and ambiance cosy and warm. We decided to order the Prix Fixe Meny with four dishes. None of the them disappointed us. They were absolutely lovely prepared. We'll definitely return.
Feels more like a NY than a San Francisco restaurant--refined but cozy, with its nice wallpaper and all. Food was all excellent: lobster and swedish meatballs for one, price fixe with trout starter and sirloin lamb, nice and rare with good vege and sauce for the other. Service very nice too. Certainly convenient for before an event. A bit pricey, but would still call it among the top two or three for us in Hayes Valley.
Very good place , excellent food and creative menu good service a bit dark inside, definitely a place for a special occasion...
Pleasant and warm ambiance, and an adventurous and unusual menu that we found delightful. My lamb shoulder was moist, tender and flavorful and my boyfriend's Swedish meatballs were wonderfully seasoned and rich. Very caring and attentive service.
Food is always delicious and service is top notch.
Sensitive to special food requests, allergies, etc.
Lovely food and great service
I booked this place because it’s one of the few Scandinavian restaurants in the city. The cuisine was modern and the desert course was great! I recommend getting the Northern Lights for desert!
Extremely disapointig food and service. I used to love this restaurant. Hiking that it was just an off night since I always had good experiences there before.
The food here is a work of art. The flavors and amazing! I highly recommend.
As a native swede, I must say the food is very good. Loved the rösti, presented in a very creative way. Fairly pricey but good service.
Lovely cozy little place with great food and drinks. They asked us right away if we had to get to a performance and needed to leave at a certain time, which we did, because we were going to the ballet. I thought it was nice of them to ask, so they didn't drag out the meal and make us late for our show. They timed it perfectly. Our server was wonderful. The food was amazing. Being of Scandinavian heritage, I had high expectations, and it did not disappoint. The artichoke soup was divine. The gravlax had an unexpected combination of ingredients that worked flawlessly together. The lamb was delicious. The halibut special was phenomenal. And the rhubarb pie! OMG. My eyes bulged when I tasted it. We paired each course with delicious drinks. Our total came out to about $200 (before tip) for 2 people, a splurge but not outrageous compared to other fancy places in the area.
We went to Plaj before a performance at the Jazz Center. We got last minute reservations for a group of 4 for 5pm. We were seated quickly and greeted by our server. She asked if we had a performance to attend so she could make sure we got out on time. We had wine and cocktails before dinner. The server was helpful with suggestions for cocktails and appetizers. We had 3 appetizers to share. The octopus was fantastic as well as the beets. We ordered lamb for dinner and the special which was halibut. Everything was delicious and hot. We shared a dessert strawberry rhubarb which was great. The ambiance was nice with low lighting and spaced out tables. As it filled up we noticed that it was a bit noisy but not to the point of detracting from conversation. We will go back.
We ordered the halibut, elk and Swedish pancake, all excellent dishes. The ambiance was less than spectacular, but definitely cute in an IKEA way. I wouldn't take a partner for a romantic date. Service was very slow, and the host was sort of abrasive as if he had a bad day; however, he ensured our drink order was in immediately.
Overall the food makes this place 3.5 to 4 stars. The rest was lacking for the price.
What makes Plaj unique is the inventive and delicious food. It’s truly extraordinary. It’s also quiet and festive. The service is great. Terrific for pre-symphony or ballet due to its location. Perfect for a special occasion.
I have been here several times it is a great dinner spot before a Ballet or Opera. I had the gnocchi it was very creative and delicious.
So amazing that I had to come back the two days later. And they remembered me and my "usual" drink. The food is beyond good. We clapped...for food...? Everything on that menu is delicious and beautiful but the Strawberry-Ruhbarb pie with Bay leaf ice cream is so good that I might come to the bar tonight just to eat it again. My brother who thinks everything in NY is better grudgingly admitted the Muscovy Duck was the best they ever had and he hopes they come to the James Beard House, but would get on a plane for this food.
I love everything here .Fantastic Scandinavian food in the city. Food was delicious. Service really nice too.
We were here for a birthday celebration between the ballet and tango at the theatres next door. The guest happened to be Swedish and the restaurant Scandinavian, so I expected criticism. But the style of cuisine appeared to be authentic and perfectly prepared. The rye bread and herb butter spread were classic and a great surprise.
