My date and I were treated like royalty for a true Scandinavian experience! Service was absolutely pleasant, the food plating was a visionary journey, and the food was divine! I highly recommend this little restaurant with a bold impression to anyone!

My friends & I enjoyed Plaj before attending a show at Herbst Theater. The location was great in that we were able to walk to the theater from the restaurant. As for the food, it was in a word, excellent! To begin, we ordered bread with carmelized butter & smoked fish croquettes as appetizers. The bread was dense & flavorful & the croquettes were delicious! For our entrees, three of the four of us ordered the traditional Swedish meatballs with potato puree, lingonberry jam, & pickled cucumbers. The meatballs were very savory & smothered with a tasty gravy. The potatoes were a little stiff to me, but good nonetheless. The fourth person in our group ordered the saddle of elk entree & said she was dreaming about how delicious it was the next morning! We didn't have time for dessert, but I look forward to visiting again & trying them! The atmosphere was nice, although it was a bit loud & hard to have a conversation. We were seated away from the main dining room, near the front door & by the bar, so that could've been why we sometimes had trouble carrying on a conversation. Overall, we all really enjoyed Plaj & would love to go back again in the future.

Everyone really enjoyed their food and we had a great time. This is a good spot for dinner or a drink before a show.

The misses: I called the restaurant in advance to let them know there was a vegan in my group, they said it was no problem and they had lots of vegan items. The server was attentive to this when we sat down, however nothing on the menu was actually vegan except for one salad. The vegan plate was tasty but we expected more given the conversation in advance. They did have a few vegetarian items though, so this would be great for veggies. When we got there they didn't have the reservation for the correct number of people, but my confirmation did. The service was slow, especially for cocktails but everyone was very nice and we had a very nice dinner overall.

Such interesting cuisine. We have never been disappointed eating here. Favorite dish is the beet cured gravlax —-unlike any other. I dream about this dish. Yum! We highly recommend Plaj for foodies and others open to new food experiences.

The food was delicious, well presented, and quite creative given a limited selection. The room is beautiful. However, the restaurant was understaffed for the predictable pre-theater crowd and noisy to the point that conversation was impossible unless you wanted to scream over the din. Some sound absorption on the ceiling would go a long way to help. While it is perfectly placed for a lovely dinner before the opera or symphony, I would avoid those times unless you want weak service and no interaction with your guests

We were a group of 7 people who enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Plaj. We were seated at the big table in the back of the restaurant. The service was excellent and the food was also very good. It was one of the first times that I have wanted to try everything on the dinner menu, everything just sounded so good and many items listed are rarely on other restaurant menus, such as Swedish meatballs, pork cheeks and saddle of elk. We will definitely return to Plaj.

It's difficult to find a quiet restaurant in SF where one can really converse that also has great, interesting food and isn't outrageously expensive. This place fits the bill. The food is so interesting and different than anything you find elsewhere.

A very nice restaurant and a wonderful experience. Terrific food in a cozy and intimate space. As my friend said, the food is a fusion of Scandinavian and Californian cuisine. Service was impeccable. I think this is the perfect place for a date to an evening for friends to just relax and enjoy a delicious meal. Although I did not have the wine, the menu had a nice selection of wines, something to try on another occasion. A real hidden gem near City Hall and Hayes Valley.

Food was exquisite beyond belief. Service was inexcusably slow, since we said upon arriving at 5:45 that we had 8pm symphony tickets (New Year’s Eve). We left at 7:50 without getting dessert. Another table had to leave before getting entrë.

This has become our favorite before and/or after ballet app/dinner/dessert location. Not only is it highly convenient to the SF Opera House, but the food and service are certainly noteworthy. Although I am generally not a dessert person, I cannot resist their lovely selection or sweets including their quintessential Princess Cake.
Lovely service everytime - they really go above and beyond!

Great food, nice ambiance with fireplace. It's a shame the woman who served us was cold and not friendly at all. I believe she said she was from Latvia. She was very unfriendly and never smiled. I understand if she was having a bad day but she barely took care of us. It seemed like an inconvenience to ask her for more water or etc..

Go for the food but ask for a different server.

We had a reservation in advance, yet had a terrible table behind the reception area. There was no light, noisy and small portions. Interesting food, decent service (we tipped well) but poor table location. I will not return.

Plaj offered a great balance of variety on the menu without being overwhelming. We were even able to fill up on a variety of gluten-free fish and vegetarian options. The dishes felt like more original, modern versions of traditional Scandinavian fare and were very well prepared and delicious. The restaurant elevates in noise level very quickly (possibly the loudest dinner out I've experienced) but still maintains a cozy and romantic feel. The staff was reserved but attentive. We would definitely recommend Plaj to friends and family.

Very mixed bag foodwise- the Elk Tartare was excellent. However, the scallops were overcooked and tough. My daughter chicken was well cooked but it was a tiny portion for $28 dollars. The service was brusque and our friend was asked to leave the bar while waiting for us supposedly to use this spot for a diner. I heard that the owner had recently opened another restaurant in Marin and he mentioned that he was happy to be spending more time closer to home but clearly his flagship restaurant could use more attention....

Horrible seating location at a table in the bar area and right next to the load noises from running the bar. Table was not inside the main restaurant area. First course of food was good and hot. Main course was flavorful but only like warm.

We enjoyed the food and service. Although we were a party of 12 we fphad to split the reservation into 3 tables of four.
All enjoyed the elk, chicken, cabbage, and crab.

We liked the venue and would easily come back for more.

Having eaten at Plaj a number of times I have always found it to be an enjoyable although pricey experience. However, this last visit was a deal breaker. The service was excellent and the food tasted good, but the portion size was not acceptable. My husband ordered the scallop entrée for $35. The plate contained exactly 2 scallops with a lot of vegetables and sauce. Doing the math we were charged $17.50 per scallop. This seems rather outrageous! I don't think that we will be dining at Plaj in the future! I would also caution other diners that if value matters to them they may want to make another choice for dining.

We have been to Plaj a few times, and we love the food and the location prior to Symphony.
This time it was noisy and it was difficult to have a conversation. We don't remember it being so noisy a year or two ago.

One of my fav restaurants but was disappointed for the first time. I ordered a scallop dinner plate for a dinner price but there were only 2 scallops! Not dinner but an appetizer! On the way out, we heard 2 other parties complain about this to staff.

The food was very interesting and unusual. The atmosphere was spacious and quiet. A great place to talk with old friends. Our wait person was very friendly, helpful and fun. The rest of the staff was in short-cold-which is strange for a restaurant in the Hayes Valley area. Get there early if you need to park. The area fills up and then one has to park in front of the Civic Center.

Plaj is a lovely place for pre theatre/symphony dining. The food is very good with some interesting Scandinavian touches. The room is attractive and service is attentive. Plaj is right out the back door of the opera house so you won't be late for performances there or at the symphony.

Seriously one of the best meals I've had in SF in a long time. If you want to get away from the standard asian/italian/spanish/"California fresh" regime that pervades throughout SF, come to Pläj. Everything we had was fresh, flavorful, and most of all, DELICIOUS. I'm not even a big salad guy, but even their salad was memorable.

Pläj's food is delicious, healthy & inventive.
The service was top notch.
The setting was cozy and attractive.
I wish I could go back right away.

Went for the Yuleboard dinner for the second year in a row. This year was excellent, even better than last year (I think they edited the selection down nicely, e.g. removing the soufflé from the final serving; that was a bit too much to take last year). Went with the wife and the two of us were almost able to finish the entire meal (did fast the day before in preparation ;) The pickled herring, salmon and Swedish meatballs where the best ever... The homemade sweets were all perfect.

Interesting to go to once but I thought I'd try their special Winter/Holiday prix fix 'feast'.
The ham and the sparerib were awful. The potato dish was wonderful but I try not to eat potatoes. The elk turine was blah; I prefer the bottled Glogg from World Market to their house made concoction; I would have loved a lot more herring and maybe some beef tongue; the rice pudding was watery and bland.
