Amazing food and atmosphere
Very authentic Swedish persuasion food prepared to perfection.
Cozy atmosphere, interesting interior design & easy to hear conversations.
Unfortunately, our waitstaff person put a huge damper on our dining experience...very abrupt, non-engaging, impatient...demonstrating an unpleasant & cynical attitude.
Our dining occasion was a 50th Wedding Anniversary & I was quickly becoming very embarrassed to have
brought my Swedish Family to dine here, due to the uncomfortable atmosphere being created by
the service of our waitstaff person.
Fortunately, other servers were much more professional and pleasant.
We came because of the Swedish menu. Sooo de-li-cious! Have been here before and knew
we would have a wonderful dining experience.
We love the quiet elegant atmosphere of Plaj
and also the Scandinavian menu. The cocktails are outstanding.
Something different and worth trying. I can't say I have much knowledge or experience with Swedish food but the waiter was patient and took time to explain dishes. All the recommended dishes were beautiful and delicious.
Elegant, tasty, service is professional and well informed about what the kitchen has to offer. Love going and will be back soon!
My favorite restaurant in San Francisco. The food is so fresh and the flavors really complement the food. Chef is very creative, I've been here multiple times with different dishes on the menue and I've never been disappointed. Highly recommend.
Food/drinks were amazing, service was ok. Definitely will be back for the food.
Had an amazing meal - the herring, summer salad and duck were so delicious. The setting was cozy and inviting.
Excellent Swedish food near Symphony and Opera for a quick and excellent meal. Service was very fast getting the meal in 10 minutes when we only had 30 minutes before the event.
food is always excellent and the menu is extremely interesting
Dined here just after a three week vacation in Scandinavia. Pläj features a very authentic high end Scandinavian cuisine, with outstanding service in a nice setting.
I've dined at Plaj several times and it has always triumphed. I've brought my boyfriend's family here before -- they're of Norwegian descent -- and everything was amazed at the authentic nature of the menu. This time I had brought an assortment of friends before the Symphony and we all had a lovely time. Our server was exquisite and so was the food.
The food at Plaj is delicious, great seafood and wine selection. You feel like you are visiting Scandanvia and the interior is very warm and intimate. Recommend for a date. The gin cocktail is also delicious.
Been golng to Plaj for a couple years now. We love their take on Scandinavian food, and their cocktails are delicious! Very fresh ingredients and unique flavors.
Lovely service, imaginative menu. We had a very nice experience. Service was attentive but not oppressive. We let them know we were attending the symphony and they made sure to get us out in time without seeming rushed.
Food was only so so, and it was very expensive
This was a very pleasant meal at an excellent restaurant. The food was outstanding- we shared three starters and a main. The starters were grav lax, maine lobster, and the foie gras. The main was the saddle of elk. Each one of these dishes was like something on Top Chef: superbly prepared and elegantly plated. Each was creative and very interesting, introducing ingredients that were innovative and bold. It was really fun trying each.
Service was wonderful - very cheerful and helpful staff, promptly attended to us and explained the dishes.
Our only - relatively minor - complaints were that the ambience is a bit stark and not in keeping with the quality of the food.
We were also concerned that it might be a bit noisy. There was a loud boisterous group that fortunately left just as we sat down, but I had the feeling that it could have been unpleasant had we come earlier. And although it quieted down, I could still distinctly hear the conversation at a table on the other side of the room, so acoustic could be improved.
The restaurant isn't cheap, but I do think it is good value for money given the extremely high quality of the food and the excellent service.
Overall, though, the food and service make this a restaurant that I would definitely recommend to friends and would return to.
Good tasting food that also looked pretty. Fairly authentic Scandinavian food
Location: Hidden in the back of a hotel. First time trying Swedish place in San Fran, the salad n beets are refreshing and exordinary. Everything were garnished by the taste of Lingenberries, from beginning to end. Will come again.
If I’m spending the money I want to get something that tastes better than something I can make from home.
Took my friend for her birthday
So nice to be able to converse
We shared the herring and a delicious salad
Then entrees of Swedish meatballs and I had veal cheeks
Great cocktails, food and service
A very good meal, especially for the price. The Herring was so amazing and all the dishes were made with care.
Plaj is my go-to pre-theater spot. The food is excellent and the staff are really good at getting me out in time to make my show. It's also a good spot to take foodie friends you want to impress.
Definitely worth a visit.
We ate here after an opera performance. Great cocktail (Swedish Gold), beet cured gravlax, and Swedish potato pancakes with caviar for appetizer. Veal and Elk entrees were both tasty (veal was better). As there was a big rush into the restaurant following the opera performance, service was on the slow side--though the staff had warned us, our entrees were somehow delayed more than we would have expected. Overall, service was very good and attentive. Because of the delay we didn't have time for desert our waiter gave us some "Swedish cookies" in baggies to take home. Actually they were gummies, which we enjoyed, and salty licorice, which was awful. We appreciated the gesture though (we think). Would definitely return, but skip the licorice even if free.
Our server was great, but we were annoyed by another server who kept checking whether we have finished our desserts (it was sweet so we ate slowly!) and gave us a lot of pressure to leave the restaurant. That almost ruined the night (but glad that it was our main server who said goodbye to us, so I felt better).
Nice menu. Delicious food. Competent service. Interesting space.
A second very happy visit. The salmon tartar was a different and delicious preparation, and the saddle of elk (the reason I came) was again excellent. Richard's service was again friendly, prompt, and knowledgeable, as was that from other staff. Note that most of the staff wear more than one hat and are very busy: if no one is at the front desk the moment you arrive, do not be put off. Someone will notice you and be with you promptly.
The artichoke soup was ambrosial. The service was very good. The menu is unique and offers a variety of selections and choices in the Civic Center area.
This is one of the very best restaurants in San Francisco - it is a gem!
It was our anniversary
The host got us our table by the fireplace
Drinks before at the bar were perfect as was the bartender
Food was as usual fantastic. The bread is just as my grandmother made it!!! Service perfect. A frequent spot for us
Plaj has become one of my favorite restaurants to dine at before the Opera. On Friday they had a full restaurant and got everyone served on time for the 6:30 curtain.
Fabulous food ! Presentation! Try everything and then some 5 stars all the way 👍
The service was very good. The veal cheeks were outstanding. The rest of the meal was good, but some of it had too many ingredients that muted the taste of other ingredients. For example, the burrata appetizer was covered in sauerkraut-like vegetables. The vegetables were good but blocked the taste of the burrata. The bread is good but one shouldn't have to pay for it.
Authentic Scandinavian food with a bit of an update. Everything was scrumptious. Wine and drinks reasonable. Food nicely priced too.
Bette than I expected! All the new flavors were incredible. Service was impeccable.
We were at this place for the 2nd time, invited friends - we all had a great experience. Love it! Food and service - really good!
Our second visit, all was great but their menu is kinda small, so not sure we will be back.
The flavor combinations and layers are simply outstanding! Every single dish we had was complex and delicious. The cocktails as well (especially the Swedish Gold) were all well-balanced and thought-provoking combinations of flavors. Cannot recommend this food highly enough!!!
We did find the service at the bar to be lacking - the bartender was clearly trying to juggle quite a lot and forgot one of the drinks we ordered (but we were not charged for it so that was fine).
