We arrived very late as we were at the ballet prior. They sat us right next to a cozy fireplace which was lovely! The overall dining experience was excellent from the cocktails to the wine and of course the food. The service was attentive, and even though it was late, we never felt rushed. We will definitely be back.

Good service and delicious food. The home made Swedish Rye bread is fabulous! Just like my Grandmother used to make and so hard to find anywhere but at Plaj.

If you want to have a quiet conversation, recommend going early before it gets full. Even then, noise level is better than a lot of other places unless you are beside a big party (we weren't, but have been in the past). Food and service excellent.

The service and ambiance is great. Plating and presentation are beautiful, but some of the plates like the gnocchi could use some more depth either seasoning or ingredient. The northern lights dessert and coffee are insanely good! Value is okay in comparison to similar fine dining in the area.

The food is a Astoshingl The lobster in lobster foam was remarkable. Robert Sundell is a very talented chef. I had the semla cake which is only on the menu in February.

It was a spectacular experience. One of the best, most delicious, and creative meals I've ever had. Also, their bread is to-die-for. An absolute must. It's a great place to visit pre-or post-performance at the ballet or symphony.

Our only criticism is that the dining room was so dark we had difficulty reading the menu and seeing the food.

Perfect dinner spot prior to a show and the service team is well trained for that. Delicious food! Cute place.

Plaj is tucked away down a charming corridor so it already feels like a special secret upon arrival. The wallpaper and decor continue the fantasy. The food is fantastic - updated Swedish classics.

This was such a bizarre experience. The service was so hostile we almost walked out. But then we honestly couldn't decide if the waiter had some sort of empathy-related disorder, and actually began to feel sorry for her. Basically, we asked for some help choosing a vodka-based cocktail, and after an age, one appeared that wasn't at all what we were after. We were polite, and understanding, explaining that we'd actually hoped to discuss some options with the barman... but what we got was outright hostility! So very weird. Meanwhile, other attributes of the meal:

- Very hard to get attention from any of the wait staff (we were partially sat behind a pillar that didn't help)
- Amazing food (esp. Saddle of Elk)
- The room was quite cold, but we were loathe to say anything about it given the reactions we'd had thus far.

Don't know what else to say, it was honestly the weirdest restaurant experience I can remember, and overall, really very unpleasant. And if you're wondering if we were the only ones to feel this, the table next to us felt the same.

It's a big shame, my wife is Swedish, and I was excited to find a Scandinavian restaurant for us to check out.

The food was delicious. It was Prix Fixe since it was Valentine's Day but I had some how missed the notice. So that was a surprise but the price was reasonable and there was a vegan option if the set menu item was a problem. One of our party has dairy allergies. All of the 5 courses were fresh and beautifully presented. We were going to the 7:30 ballet performance. We arrived at 5:15 pm and had no time to spare getting to the Opera House. Fortunately, it is a short walk.

We have eaten here before and loved it. Food is always very good, inventive, unique, and beautifully presented. This time the crowd was younger, louder than I recall. A bit too much drinking,squealing(one drunk lady in particular) and wasn’t the quiet,peaceful, romantic setting I was looking forward to. I think maybe these young folks were business travelers or tech workers(?). I found their noise distracting. We purposely went on Feb 13 to avoid amateur night and crowds on the 14th. So a bit disappointed. Food was still good but perhaps a smidge less memorable this time. Elk was great but Swedish meatballs were just OK.

Another excellent evening at Plaj...on of the best pre-ballet dining options in Hayes Valley, where great restaurants are everywhere! Definitely try one of their home-made aquavits!!

Swedish Gold cocktail is one of the best cocktails I've ever had. Amazing food, well presented and executed. Good vibe and atmosphere. Good service as well, though our server was cold and unfriendly. She did not smile once. But other staff was very nice. I totally recommend it.

As long as we didn’t sit in one of the ‘dark- unlit’ tables for two - our dining experience was wonderful.
We ordered the Stockholm drink to start - not too sweet and well balanced. Our starters were very good -( soup and salad) and the meatballs delicious.
The staff are very conscious about pacing the meal well for concert goers.
Lovely way to begin the evening.

An exquisite meal and great example of neo-Nordic cuisine. Many traditional spices and flavors but presented in an inventive, contemporary way. The Elk Saddle brought me right back to Västerbotten. Will make this a staple of any San Francisco visit.

You will thank yourself for choosing PLAJ! We were a party of 6 and we're there for a birthday. First I found out, since I am allergic to the preservative they dip crustaceans into before they "fresh freeze", that the lobsters were live in back so I could eat them. You would be surprised how many restaurants sell prefrozen crustaceans they did not have anything I couldn't eat. Second every single bite was exquisite. We got multiple appetizers and we each shared bites of our dinners with each other. There was not an imperfect bite on the table. Amazing! My husband's parents are coming to town and we can't wait to take them here. It is a little pricey but soooo worth it. PLAJ is going to be my go to restaurant recommendation now. I can't imagine anyone not loving every bite here. Simply amazing!

Cocktails good, mushroom soup good, fish croquettes good, Swedish meatballs good, elk a disaster. The last was a messy hodgepodge of textures and clashing flavors all over powdered by a too sharp/vinegar-y liquid. Not very pleasing to the eye, either. And crazy price.
Meringue on Passion fruit sorbet thing was inedibly over sweetened

I generally find some minor issue with most restaurant visits, but Plaj defied any objections. The ambience is extraordinary, particularly in this day of modern, sheik stripped down places. The food was a decided departure from the ordinary. I had the duck breast, which I often order in restaurants, but this was much different---the Scandanavian twist made it different than any other preparation I have had----different, but delightful. Service was extraordinary---attentive without cloying. Yes it is very expensive, but it was a memorable night.

Wow! Every dish was amazing! We ordered 4 apps and an entree, and every one of them was super memorable. Highly recommend the Raraka and there was a caramelized goat(?) cheese on the cheese board hat melted in your mouth! He service was wonderfully attentive. I have weird and annoying food allergies and they were SO lovely about making sure I wasn’t served anything I should eat! Will be back for sure!!!

Everything was great. Highlights were the herring, the elk, and surprisingly, the bread!! Also, the cocktail I had was fantastic. Beautiful place. Great place if you want to really impress your social or business guest.

1. Very good, pricy food.
2. Too loud for a party of 2. Every night there is a huge party in the back.
3. We came specifically to enjoy again an item still on the online menu only to find it was no longer on the real menu. Thanks for nothing.
