We went for Sunday brunch at 11:30 am. Food was overall ok. Some of my party didn’t care for theirs. Turkey burger and fries were good. I thought spinach and goat cheese omelette was good, my friend didn’t. My husband and another friend didn’t care for the Vol au vent. Mac and cheese was good! Service was great. Our server thought to bring my friend’s 2year old’s mac and cheese first. After she was eating, the server said the kitchen gave the “adult” menu Mac and cheese and not the kids one. The 2 year old didn’t care! She loved the bacon and peas they were in the adult version. The server brought the kids one too, no charge! Very nice!! (And we got to enjoy extra Mac n cheese)!
We had Sunday brunch and it was fabulous!! Didn’t get to take advantage of the “boozy brunch” as we were with our kids but it looked like a great deal. The atmosphere was great as was the service. We look forward to making a future reservation for dinner soon.
Even though OPENTABLE had confirmed my reservation for two people at 11:00 pm, and we have arrived 5 minutes bafore the desalinhe, the restaurant simply refused us saying that the kitchen was already closed. Considering the time, we lost others alternatives and went to bed hungry. Very bad expeience... I hope that you asked the restaurant why that happned.
Bad food. l I LOVED the shrimp and grits that they had on many previous occasions. This time, no shrimp and grits. My friend and I both had chicken pot pie. My friend was okay with hers and was in somewhat of a hurry, so I didn't send mine back, but I should have. The flavor was fine, but the temperature was uneven (they may have microwaved it) and the crust was awful - not cooked through, though the top was broiled and close to black. One bite of the crust was enough. I only what was under the crust. The potato chunks weren't cooked well, but everything else was acceptable. Even if the pot pie had been perfect, which was far from true, the dish was overpriced. I'm never going back.
I love PJ Clarke's, it's close to my office, the food is good and usually you can get a table on short notice. On this visit, I ordered an Arugula salad and the server asked if I wanted a protein added, she named several and I asked for the crab cake. The crab cake was okay, certainly not the best I've had at local restaurants. The worse part was when the check came and I had been charged $17.00 for the crab cake and the salad was $13.00; really!!! $30 for a salad with one crab cake. That's ridiculous. When the charge for a topper on a salad is more than the salad, the customer should be informed at the time of ordering. And if you're going to charge $17 for a crab cake, it should be a good crab cake!!
We chose this restaurant for its Southern/comfort menu. Unfortunately, our experience was not very positive. My daughter ordered a hamburger. The server did not ask her how she would like it cooked and when served, it was very rare. We ordered the homemade tater tots, which were okay, but frankly the store bought ones are probably better. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich, it had a significant amount of untrimmed fat and gristle, which is unacceptable when it is served on a bun. The accompanying fries were unremarkable. The servers were extremely polite, but the manager? was not. When we first arrived, servers were arranging tables and he chastised them several times for no particular reason we could see. He seemed aggressive and angry. Although this was not directed at us, we felt very sympathetic for the poor servers. All of this would not have mattered that much, except that our total meal bill was over $100. I don't mind paying for good food or good service, but I got neither. I would have had a more satisfying meal at McDonalds, and I hate McDonalds.
Next time I want to be ignored, I'll just go to Home Depot where they've perfected the art of pretending customers are invisible. If it weren't for the on-duty manager, I'd still be waiting to order...he was very nice and after I'd been sitting there for 10 minutes without so much as a how-do-you-do from the wait staff, he came up and asked if I'd been helped and he took my order (I'd pretty much memorized the menu by then, so I knew what I wanted). It took forever for the sandwich to arrive and a bit longer for the correct one to reach the table, but it was tasty. Then it took another long bit of time for someone to bring me the bill...the only server who actually approached me except the one who refilled my water glass. I know I'm only a single diner, but seriously, it's a restaurant, people eat there, and there were only 4-5 other tables occupied while I was there.
The service was unapologetically slow - the server did not apologize for the initial delay nor any subsequent delays. She did not smile or try to connect even. Our meals were incorrect. I had ordered the Cadillac burger without cheese and it came with cheese. His kobe burger was ordered medium and it came to the table very medium rare. Both were sent back. Again, no one apologized for the mistake though it was corrected. Once the replacements arrived no attempt was made at service recovery. The meal was just average. Throughout my 12 day vacation to the area, this was the most underwhelming. I mentioned to the maitre'd that I lived on the block where the original PJ Clarke's is in NYC and had frequented the venue. This one did it justice only in decor and atmosphere. I was not impressed at all by food nor service.
The issues wasn't so much the food or the server but the host or the server who was covering for the host. I came all smiles with some business guests we had and told the server that I had a reservation. All he said was "I don't see it" and took some menus and seated. They seated us between the kitchen and the door when there was tons of empty tables further in the restaurant. I didn't complain because like I said I was with business colleagues and didn't want to make a scene. It is unfortunate that as you enter that is the first impression you get. That they don't really want to be there and clearly this is a paycheck. I understand customer service is a hard business because you are dealing with people but you have to remember you make and break peoples experiences with your attitude. A bad attitude is a personal thing and no one else's fault that it is happening. The food and our server were fine.
