About Pizzeria da Nella
Deep dish is as authentically Chicago as Lake Shore Drive traffic, but in the past few years, Neapolitan-style pizza has given it a run for its money. A big reason for its popularity is the pies at Spacca Napoli, a Ravenswood restaurant that opened in 2006 with pies by Nella Grassano, a Naples native who started baking in her family's pizzeria when she was just 12 years old.
After leaving Spacca Napoli in 2007, Grassano reappeared briefly at Nella Pizzeria Napoletana before that restaurant closed. Now, Grassano is back (hopefully for good this time) at her own Lincoln Park restaurant, Pizzeria da Nella Cucina Napoletana.

Pizzeria da Nella Ratings and Reviews
My Italian family had a delicious meal after Sunday morning Mass. We have 8 adults and 5 children and the staff welcomed us and accommodated all of our needs. The restaurants was quiet and the food was delicious!! The bar was beautiful with views of the pizza ovens. I will definitely return! Perhaps to celebrate my birthday with friends or a date night with my love.
We eat often at Da Nella and we have brought friends there with us who like it too. Da Nella has an extensive menu as well as the famous pizza. We live in the neighborhood and we often stop in for dinner after a movie at Facet's, for instance. The host is affable and the food is authentic. The patio is lovely in summer. What's not to love?
A fun, casual spot with fantastic outdoor dining in the adjacent courtyard. Service is a little uneven- they delivered the wrong pizza twice. However, the quality of the crust makes up for any frustration. It is slightly charred, bubbly, and yeasty. Salads are fresh and delicious. Drinks are great. The tartufo afogato is heavenly.
The pizza is great. If you sit outside be prepared to have your ankles chewed by some kind of ankle biting bug.
Seems like a popular spot for families with small children, some extremely well behaved others an absolute nightmare with zero parental oversight or input on bad behaviour. Who gives toddlers a pizza cutting wheel to play with and then does nothing when the kids start fighting with it.
Before I went Gluten free this was the place to get authentic Neopolitan pizza. Now that I eat Gluten free I ordered the salmon which came on a bed of sautéed spinach over a lemony Parmesan sauce. The salmon was just ok. I would not drive here for the salmon. However my party shared the meatballs which were outstanding! I'm sure they were not entirely Gluten free but the meatballs didn't come as a sandwich- just meat balls and a delicious tomato sauce. My dining companions comments were: If you are a fan of Neopolitan pizza run, don't walk - you will love Nella's pizza!
Above average, Neapolitan style pizza. The staff was friendly but overly aggressive. At some point having a staff person ask you every three minutes if you're still working on your pizza goes from helpful and attentive to annoying and disruptive - especially when it's hours before closing time and no one is waiting for a table. That point was reached fairly early on.
We walked up here when the wait was too long at the nearby famous deep dish spot. Very glad we did!
Stuffed pizza was unique and delicious. Staff clearly takes great pride in the quality of the food. Service was friendly and attentive.
I will make it a point to return here sometime.
Extremely disappointing! Made reservation but restaurant sat on first come first serve basis (why do Open Table?) and offered the bar as only option. Server had us use our bread dish for our shared appetizer and then was expecting us to use it again for our pizza and was visibly offended when we asked for clean plates for our pizza. Food was traditional Baples pizza and was fine but service was understaffed and left much to be satisfactory. Next to the bar was a group of 12 brownie scouts whose parents left them on their own while they sat elsewhere. Needless to say the noise was excessive and the ambiance was lacking.
I had a great experiencing hosting my son's baptism reception in their private dining space upstairs. The private dining space is truly a Hidden Gem. I was first introduced to their restaurant when I worked as the ED for the Lydia Smith Sickle Cell foundation and its founder Robert. Frank, Da Nella's manager, was courteous and gracious to accommodate my last minute request for their private room upon my realization they had one. Both my guests and I were pleasantly surprised at how beautiful the space is especially considering I did not have enough time to do a site visit for that particular space prior to the event. Yet, I shouldn'the have been surprised because the upstairs was in keeping with the bright inviting ambiance of the main dining level below. The food was very good. Even an Italian family friend who makes her own meals from scratch said she was pleased in spite of her discerning palate. My only suggestion would be to request an additional server for a party of my size (nearly 25 people). While our server Ricardo did a great job, and we did come a little bit early, there was an adjustment phase regarding the pace of our service upon our arrival. Still, they did an excellent job and I would definitely recommend them to others. I look forward to trying their outdoor patio when the weather warms up!
This is the second year in a row that we have had dinner here after attending the lights at the zoo kick off. The servers are very knowledgeable and very friendly. We were with a bunch of kids and this place is very kid friendly. They make pizzas specifically for them such as nemo or Mickey Mouse. This isn't your standard Chicago pizza which makes it a nice change. There are so many different special options and they are all so good. The waiter was very helpful and was a pleasant addition to our evening. I highly recommend this place for the food, service and price. Can't wait to go back.
Excellent restaurant with tasty food and attentive service. Have been coming here for business meals for the past couple of years. This dining occasion was also for business. The only drawback was that the restaurant had a large children's party spread over several tables, which made the room almost intolerably noisy. I could barely hear my business guest, who was sitting just across from me! Fortunately, the large party left about 45 minutes into our meal and the noise level diminished significantly. Still, I think the restaurant management should rethink booking those kinds of parties, since there is no separate room to accommodate them. I understand it generates valuable business, but it comes at the expense of other diners in the large open space. That said, I must emphasize how much I really like coming to the restaurant and will most certainly be back. I'll just be a little more on the lookout for gaggles of screaming children!
Our group tried four different pizzas and each one was delicious (albeit, the crust of the pizza with the most ingredients was a little too soft ). Ingredients are fresh and very tasty. Service was terrific---and our waiter was quite thoughtful about the timing of our additional pizza to go. Looking forward to going back and exploring more of the menu---if we can stop ordering the pizzas.
We had been here before and the service is kind of odd. It doesnt seem like the staff knows anything about the food. This was our second visit and the service was terrible. We waited over 40 minutes for entrees and no apology or contriteness. Then 2 of us got our meals and the other two people waited another 10 minutes. And we had pastas - not too complicated. 2 people askd for another drink and this took at least 15 minutes and we had to ask twice. And then he brought 3 drinks.
I asked the owner for a spoon and this took about 5 minutes. I am not sure why simple requests took so much time. I know the couple we brought here will never come back.
A group of 7 eating outside on their patio with a reservation on a Sunday night. It was perfect.
Service was outstanding. Food was awesome. Value was great. A real gem. Would go back in a second.
Other members of the group were skeptical at first on why we were travelling out of our River North base. They all loved it and would also go back.
