Piqueos Ratings and Reviews
I lived in Peru for 1 year and a half and I love peruvian food. I've been in different peruvian restaurants but I have to say that "Piqueo's" really have that peruvian taste that I miss. Really great food, good prices, nice place and good service. The only thing I complain is that they don't have pisco but other than that everything was really great.
Our long-time family favorite never disappoints. Adorable, delicious, filling, good value, sweet servers - the best of the Peruvians in our not-so-humble opinion (& we've tried them all!), and do love its sister restaurants as well. Our daughter was visiting from NY for the holidays, and wouldn't leave town w/o a visit.
Piqueos has authentic Peruvian cuisine! Having recently been to Peru, I was really impressed with the rich flavor of their dishes and adherence to the cultural classics of the country. They also have a nice wine list that includes Carmenere, a personal favorite.
The Tuna Ceviche was much too sweet for my taste. The octopus and shrimp also could have had a little more acidity. I like Ceviche to have a creaminess and not be watery at all. The other dishes and wine were really excellent. Service could have been more attentive, however the manager dropped by our table a couple of times to check on us and ask about our meal. The restaurant is vibrant and cosy - we had a very nice evening :-)
Atrocious service, mediocre food--generally a total rip-off. The waitress was unhelpful and couldn't explain most of the dishes or ingredients to us. We asked a few time for guidance on how much to order--the waitress made a big fuss about how the tapas plates only served 2--compelling us to order more food--and then when the food finally arrived, it was clear that the tapas plates varied a lot in size and we had over ordered by at least 1 or 2 dishes. The food was fine, but definitely not worth the price or the terrible service experience.
The food is always excellent here, but...seeming to follow the trend of so many formerly outstanding restaurants in San Francisco, the prices increase & the portion sizes decrease...again, the quality of the food is excellent, it's just that there's less & less of it...we have been going there for years and, of note, particularly, the churrassco [sp?] has nearly doubled in price & become unaffordable for us now, regardless of the portion size...
Great restaurant in Bernal Heights. Terrific ceviche! It's tapas style. The restaurant very, very quickly (read: too quickly) brought out the various plates ordered. Although a wonderful meal, it felt rushed as plates crowded the small table (and kept coming).
I like this restaurant but they changed the way the ceviche mixto was prepared, adding lots of ginger to the same type I usually order, and very spicy too. I didn't like it at all.
I think if they change the recipe, they should change the name...so no surprises.
Sorry - I usually love this place....Our initial waiter did not greet us. He did not come to the table for at least 15 mins. Though he was close by. Frankly we all felt like second rate citizens and were ready to leave. We agreed to stay... I had to ask the maitre D to get service. It went downhill from there.
We had bought a nice wine and he opened the bottle at the table And poured the wine in a brown bag we brought it in! Our waiter continued to be detached from us, sullen, unfriendly and frankly rude and dismissive. After our meals arrived (en mass) we asked him if we could slow down on the last dish and we received another look and a grunt. He was sullen with other tables but I felt like we were being punished somehow by his non engagement. He did not ask how the food was even though he was often at a waiter station directly behind us. We also noticed that other waiters were not engaging with him well either. They usually are a great team. I asked to see the manager and he was at our table reviewing the situation very quickly. He was very supportive and apologetic.
In all a very unpleasant experience however everything changed after that. Our waiter was immediately removed from serving us without question. The manager himself took over the table. I remember the manager waiting tables for us before. We were well taken care of and were actually comped dishes.
The maitre D and the manager were gracious and effective. I hold no grudge for this good local restaurant. That waiter needs to be disciplined and put on performance improvement . If I was management I would fire him on the spot. There is no reason why a customer should feel uncomfortable because of a waiters attitude - ever! We were looking forward to a nice evening and he tainted it. Thanks to the manager and the maitre D for turning this around. I thanked them on the way out. Yes-we will be back because the food IS fresh and tasty. The service is usually much better... even when it is busy.
Would not recommend Piqueos any more. Service unbelievably poor. Must have been 15 minutes before we even received menus. Lack of English spoken. Order was delivered wrong. Waiter was completely apathetic. No one cares. Where is the ownership? We had a very poor dining experience here and will not return.
