Pippali saved Christmas. It's a long story, but suffice it to say their kindness and cheerfulness coupled with astonishingly delicious food saved the day in a series of crummy days leading up to the holiday.
The tenderness of their paneer and the rich flavors of their curries (and peppery goodness of their kali mirch, with actual black peppercorns -- why do so many places miss the "black pepper" part of the curry in "black pepper chicken"?! it's not vindaloo!) made it rocket to the top of my wife & I's favorite lists.
I already raved on Instagram about them being generous with my desired spice level, but my wife absolutely adored her paneer makhanwala, as well as the fact that they have three different paneer dishes nestled among a vegetarian menu with a large variety. Not that we're vegetarian, but I do love legumes and she loves her cheese.
That said, if I can make a super nitpicky criticism, one that absolutely won't stop us from returning? We weren't a fan of the plating of the samosas. There was what seemed like a sweet sauce drizzled underneath them. I thought it was the tamarind sauce, but my wife thought otherwise. I'm not a huge fan of overly sweet mixed with savory and I felt even that small amount overpowered the spices of the samosa filling. But that is a nitpick, like I said.
The decor is pleasant and fine. It feels kind of old-school in a way thanks to the wallpaper, but not in any way that hurts or gets in the way of the experience. We were there in early afternoon so it might be more dim/chill in the evening, but again, it was fine.
We have some spots we love in Astoria depending on if we want creamier or more savory -- as you know, regional differences in Indian cuisine have a big effect on the cooking -- but something about Pippali's entrees absolutely hit every single one of our taste preferences. We will definitely be back, and I look forward to trying some more of my favorites.
The food is the real standout. Delicious! First time trying the Kashmiri Rogan Josh (lamb shanks) and it was excellent. Can’t go wrong with the Palak Paneer and Achari Bhindi and the house made chutney. When in Midtown with a craving for Indian, this is my go to restaurant.
Enjoyed lunch thali of chicken tikka masala - it’s a small portion of the main since it’s served thali style with small tiffins for rice, raita, daal, and vegetable curries. Also served with naan. Food is well spiced and restaurant was quiet with only a few other full tables for weekday lunch special.
Cauliflower appetizer was to die for. Each dish was so uniquely flavorful. I can’t believe it took me this long to try this place considering I lived half a block away for 5 years and moved to the UWS 2 years ago.
Enjoyed all our choices--especially lamb shank rogan josh and special duck, which have never seen on another Indian restaurant menu. Portions were all generous.
While the food was excellent it kind of pales in comparison to the bad service. You would think it was due to a shortage of staff but no, plenty of staff on the floor, it’s their particular function that is perplexing. Repeatedly ignored by passing employees, it got very frustrating to enjoy what was left of the experience.
Food was amazing. I loved the lamb biryani! Will go back again.
I enjoyed my dinner at Pippali. The menu features some dishes not usually found in Indian restaurants as well as many traditional favorites.
Very impressed with Pippali. Very nice staff and incredible food. Everything was delicious. Well prepared: achari bhindi (okra), palak paneer, deg gohst ( lamb), classic tandoori chicken. All excellent choices and delicious. Sat outside on the street. Excellent Indian food.
Some of the best Indian cuisine I’ve had. On top of that, the waiters are so accommodating and friendly. Definitely going back
Usually the food is excellent, tonight must have been an off night. But it’s normally delicious! I’ll come back again soon love this place
Excellent food and great value for money!
Food was truly delicious and service was very friendly, helpful and accommodating.
A great experience.
Great Indian food with large portions and attentive service
Dinner with friends. Was nice. Ate outdoors so didn’t get as good a sense of the inside ambiance.
Great authentic food. Excellent service.
Pippali never disappoints. The food is always well prepared and delicious. The staff are professional and always helpful if you need assistance selecting an item for lunch, brunch or dinner. My favorite dishes include their lamb biryani and tandoori chicken but their appetizers are sure to please.
Love the service and food here. Nothing negative to report. I’ve tried most items on the menu and each time the experience was beyond. Highly recommend.
Very friendly and thoughtful service. Fun cocktails. Tasty. Very good food. Creative use of spices. Generous portions. Standout fishers were: chili shrimp appetizer, Eggplant vegetarian entree (outstanding), Raita (best I’ve had), Punjabi goat and Lamb shank Rohan Gosh. Highly recommend. Signed, a foodie
The service and food never fail. Excellent cocktail list as well.
This is my new favorite Indian restaurant. The food is fabulous and the service attentive, but not intrusive. My only issue on my last experience was that has a band playing which ruined the atmosphere and it was hard to hear each other over the music. I would check next time I go as it was the first time I have experienced that. Otherwise, it's brilliant.
Great service, amazing staff, and the food was outstanding.
I can't really say...we made the rez, but when we got there the place was closed. We went next door to Bhatti and had a delicious lunch special!
Restaurant was closed even though we had a confirmation and kept receiving reminders and notifications. How about updating your hours or making a courtesy call so we change our reservation??!!
Amazing food / felt very safe as they were taking precautions during Covid. Ordered Butter Chicken and Chicken Vindaloo.
Incredible food and balanced cocktails
We were a party of seven and all agreed that our meal at Pippali was excellent, from the cocktails to the food. We were treated to super attentive and kind service and the heat outside was well distributed so that we all managed to eat without being distracted by the cold. The outside setting is also nicely decorated, adding to a lovely ambience. The food was some of the best I have had in the area - the biryani particularly was a hit with everyone. We’ll be back - this has become a family favorite.
Went to Pippali to celebrate my friend’s birthday. Overall it was a good dinner - the food were scrumptious and the service was good.
I mean absolutely amazing. Best samosas I ever had outside Girl Scout cookies. Food was amazing, service was perfect, I highly recommend getting the desert with the rose syrup.
Great service and some of the best Indian food in all of downtown. Wish they had better social engagement since their food is so good.
Place was closed, even though the reservation was confirmed. Bad customer experience.
Aside from the amazing food our waiter Khalid was great. He made our anniversary feel special.
Overall good experience. However the restaurant that took a reservation at 12pm (opening time) wasn’t set up and ready to take guests for 15 mins. So we just had to hang around for that amount of time until they set up. After that the experience was good as staff was friendly and food was very good.
Always a winner, the food is delicious and the service is always friendly. They have carefully met all the requirements to make customers dining outdoors comfortable and safe during COVID-19. We started out with a chaat, then had tandoori chicken, biryanis, jaipuri kofta and naan. Highly recommend Pippali.
Amazing food and service. Food takes a little longer to come out but that’s how I know it’s fresh. Enjoy the ambience while you wait. You won’t regret it!
Great food and even better service. Friendly and accomodating. Beautiful outdoor seating.
We were visiting NYC and found Pippali online. They were delightful! I have gluten and dairy issues. So dining out can be a struggle. The waiter carefully explained the menu and which dishes would meet my needs. The food was fantastic and the servers were very kind! Best part was I had no stomach ache after. I most definitely will go back when I’m in the city again.
