Average Indian food. Service was lacking. Multiple servers - didn’t ask for drinks, dessert , had to flag them down. Food is a let down - too much oil. Kids liked the malai chicken, bhindi was bad, paneer kadhai was ok, butter chicken was average. Try if you are craving for Indian and can’t find anything else.

The service not good at all. They clear my boyfriend's plate while I'm still eating. They hurry next dish and they forgot bread and after he arrive burned. They clear main course dish and they put on the table the bill, without ask dessert or something else.

This has become my go to Indian restaurant. The food has been consistently good and the prices are reasonable. We have enjoyed our meals. There is also a small menu of unique tasty cocktails.

The food is moderately priced, but it does not match the standards of other good Indian restaurants in the city. Also, lighting is dim (not in a sexy way) and the ambience needs some work.

Get the Chutney Trio ! Get some cocktails ! I was here on Christmas Eve on a really cold night in Manhattan but it was nice and warm in this restaurant and the staff is very professional and welcoming. You get some complimentary pappadum to start . But we got some cocktails and appetizers to start . The Fish Koliwada which is a fried fish pieces that's a bit spicy and definitely not basic! Also the Bhajiya fritters of cauliflower onion potato and spinach. Those are recommended, very good fritters with dipping sauce. We started with a Tamarind Margarita which was great and spicy and a pomegranate rose drink which was excellent called Cutting Chai I think. For mains we got the Paneer Makhanwala which had a really delicious sauce! And the mixed grill which had a great grill flavor. Large portion too ! Get the Naan bread ( it's better than the roti ) The Old Fashioned drink is really strong and tasted like straight bourbon, next time I'd get the mule. The Mojito was delicious with fresh mint though. Get that if you like rum . The Chutney Trio was great , really unexpected. The middle one was date chutney and was delicious. I've never had that before. They were out of the kheer for dessert so we got cold Ras Malai . The flavor was very mild and next time I'd try the Gulab Jamon. Also they play mostly contemporary Indian pop and chill-out music which was REALLY nice and a pleasant note to a really great dinner. Recommended. They seem to accommodate big parties too .

Delicious and flavorful. Maybe a bit pricy for portion sizes and a bit louder than I like, but the food and service surpass those little negatives. I used to live in the neighborhood and wish I had gone there more.

I think I must have gone to a different restaurant than the other reviews. The venue was cramped and loud. After we sat down we did not get a dedicated waiter and were just ignored. We were expecting someone to come take our order but they never did so I had to eventually call over whoever appeared to be a waiter. After we got our food, there was once again no one to check in on us though out the night and we had to ask the bus girl for the check. Embarrassing. The food was subpar. Somehow it was lacking flavor and/or salt? Something you don’t expect from Indian cuisine of all things. I’ve had better Indian food around my neighborhood. Never coming back here; and neither should you.

It was starting to fill up when we were getting ready to eat. Love when all the guest are of the ethnicity of the food. You know its authentic and good. Didn't disappoint.

Overall an OK dining experience. We had a good meal, but would not go back. Service was very prompt although not very friendly. They were clearly busy, but how hard is it to be a bit welcoming? Food came out quickly and was perhaps a 7 out of 10. The restaurant is so loud that we had a hard time enjoying the meal.

Consistently the best Indian restaurant in the greater NYC area. Without being specifically high-end (e.g. Tamarind) it delivers that quality of food, but in a lower-key - and much less expensive - framework. Indeed, as much as I like Tamarind too, the experience at Pippali is one that at times can have a slight edge; perhaps because one feels less need to eat every last thing on the table, I leave Pippali utterly happy, satisfied, but not bloated. It’s just a marvelous restauranr. Not cheap, but not overpriced either; always feel happily like I got my money’s worth and then some. Everything SO fresh, from the pappadums onwards, and clearly cooked from scratch. The best of Curry Hill. Last time I was there - this past week, I had lamb vindaloo, shrimp curry, and paneer makhani, but you cannot go wrong here.

Pippali saved Christmas. It's a long story, but suffice it to say their kindness and cheerfulness coupled with astonishingly delicious food saved the day in a series of crummy days leading up to the holiday. The tenderness of their paneer and the rich flavors of their curries (and peppery goodness of their kali mirch, with actual black peppercorns -- why do so many places miss the "black pepper" part of the curry in "black pepper chicken"?! it's not vindaloo!) made it rocket to the top of my wife & I's favorite lists. I already raved on Instagram about them being generous with my desired spice level, but my wife absolutely adored her paneer makhanwala, as well as the fact that they have three different paneer dishes nestled among a vegetarian menu with a large variety. Not that we're vegetarian, but I do love legumes and she loves her cheese. That said, if I can make a super nitpicky criticism, one that absolutely won't stop us from returning? We weren't a fan of the plating of the samosas. There was what seemed like a sweet sauce drizzled underneath them. I thought it was the tamarind sauce, but my wife thought otherwise. I'm not a huge fan of overly sweet mixed with savory and I felt even that small amount overpowered the spices of the samosa filling. But that is a nitpick, like I said. The decor is pleasant and fine. It feels kind of old-school in a way thanks to the wallpaper, but not in any way that hurts or gets in the way of the experience. We were there in early afternoon so it might be more dim/chill in the evening, but again, it was fine. We have some spots we love in Astoria depending on if we want creamier or more savory -- as you know, regional differences in Indian cuisine have a big effect on the cooking -- but something about Pippali's entrees absolutely hit every single one of our taste preferences. We will definitely be back, and I look forward to trying some more of my favorites.

The food is the real standout. Delicious! First time trying the Kashmiri Rogan Josh (lamb shanks) and it was excellent. Can’t go wrong with the Palak Paneer and Achari Bhindi and the house made chutney. When in Midtown with a craving for Indian, this is my go to restaurant.

Enjoyed lunch thali of chicken tikka masala - it’s a small portion of the main since it’s served thali style with small tiffins for rice, raita, daal, and vegetable curries. Also served with naan. Food is well spiced and restaurant was quiet with only a few other full tables for weekday lunch special.

While the food was excellent it kind of pales in comparison to the bad service. You would think it was due to a shortage of staff but no, plenty of staff on the floor, it’s their particular function that is perplexing. Repeatedly ignored by passing employees, it got very frustrating to enjoy what was left of the experience.
